Moving threads in and out of Comeback Corner

A suggestion - if you intend closing a thread, then why not insert an explanatory post before shutting it?
Because that then bumps the thread up to the top of the page, which for old albums is the opposite of what we’re trying to do.

If the thread is closed for any reason other than the album campaign having ended, we do usually put an explanatory post in before closing the thread, but if it’s just out of date (and especially if it hasn’t been posted in recently) it seems counterproductive to bump a thread just to tell everyone they can’t post in it. That’s part of the reason why we’ve been trying to make it clear what the overall rule is rather than posting in each thread every time.

If you see an exception to this where a thread has been closed without an explanatory post and it isn’t for an old album campaign, feel free to PM one of us.

I think it's wise to have made this thread, explaining the mods decisions, as I've seen way too many people complaining over the months/years I've been on here when a thread is moved to comeback corner. I personally don't have an issue with it because I can easily still post in the thread regardless of where it's at.

I guess my one question would be why does a thread, for a particular album, need to be closed? Can it not be moved to comeback corner so people can continue to post in it? If I've been on an All Saints listening binge and Red Flag is giving me tingles and I want to discuss it what's the issue with me finding the thread for that album, posting in it, and it moving up the forum in comeback corner? I do get the approach of closing album-specific threads and asking people to post in the general threads instead but I also don't really see what the problem is in keeping those album-specific threads open. Surely it makes it easier for others who want to discuss a specific album to find such threads and keeps everything contained in that way?
I've often seen people post something in an artist's general thread only for people to moan at them saying "we spoke about that 4 pages back" or whatever and it creates confusion (and sometimes arguments) because someone may not have decided to scroll back 4 pages to see that. If you get my point.

I'm not really too fussed, it's just one thing that came to mind when reading about these rules.

The short answer is because that’s what general discussion threads should be for: talking about anything and everything to do with an artist that isn’t to do with their current album campaign.

Talking about specific older albums often involves talking about other albums as well - if you want to talk about Mariah Carey’s Butterfly and then the conversation moves on to talking about the progression from Daydream to Butterfly, does that discussion belong in a Daydream thread or a Butterfly thread? It just seems a bit forced. (And would it really look right to have an active thread for, say, Carly Rae Jepsen’s older albums in Comeback Corner when she’s clearly not a Comeback Corner artist?)

Having separate discussions running for multiple older albums in multiple older album threads seems like a recipe for decreasing engagement with the discussion overall, whereas going into a general thread to say that you’ve been revisiting an older album is more likely to pick up more engagement and won’t be restricted by the idea that the discussion has to be only about that album. Plus it increases the turnover of threads on the front page of the subforum and pushes other threads off it faster than it might be otherwise.

It feels neater and more reflective of how discussions actually happen around here to put that kind of thing into a general discussion thread so that conversations aren’t duplicated across multiple threads and we don’t end up with five threads for the same artist on page 1.

Retro Corner, maybe.

(I'm used to Comeback Corner through habit, but when you analyse it, there isn't much *logic* to it and some of the acts which end up there I agree). I just set my alerts for new posts in any forum I've made posts in the past, and then pick from there.

Completely fair enough, thanks for the explanation.

Because the pages are dominated by Ari, Taylor etc and sometimes because those threads get so many comments other artists don't get a look in. It's often an effort to go to the 3rd page where they end up half the time.
Why not just click Watch Thread on the threads you want to follow? Then you can go to Watched Threads whenever you want and all the threads you’ve selected will be there without being cluttered up by acts you’re not interested in. It effectively creates your own personalised subforum.

It's a good point but personally I like this forum to find music I might not otherwise have found as well as my faves. Just occasionally clicking on things does that and only focusing on certain things would mean that I might miss stuff.

I guess the equivalent would be say Goldfrapp had a hit single in the top 40. Listening to radio 1 you might hear it once or twice whereas radio 2 have it on their A list.
