Musicians of Popjustice

he/him/basic cishomo
I usually write songs by coming up with the lyrics first and then singing them over my instrumentals until melodies form. I'm happy to say that I've been writing a ton of lyrics into my little journal.
I love this for you. It's harder than ever for me to convince myself to do anything, but I know the first step to that feeling of mental wellness is to find some crumb of executive functioning and use it to do something that I actually want to do. And I do enjoy writing!

What kind of stuff do you write?

The way I keep writing songs and making demos while sitting on two albums of material.

I use ozone and just let it do it all for me tbh. I might adjust the EQ and maximiser afterwards a little bit but I’m not out here pretending to be an engineer dd. Everything always sounds great to me
How does ozone work and how much does it cost? Thinking of going with this option instead of sending it to a professional to master.

My new album was released this Friday and is called Guilt-Free Achievements.

Sometimes I like it, sometimes I hate it. It borrows the different elements from the last three albums which I do still like, especially the 2023 album which I’ve come to think is close to perfection after a year! As a result this new one feels quite varied so it could have been the album, like the 2021 New Science album sort of was. I’m just stuck on some details and depending on the platform the volume may be just a bit lower. I didn’t want to appear on the artwork but said artwork fits the music I think. ‘Mélancolie Chaotique’ is the centerpiece there and represents one of the two main sounds of the album, with ‘The Final Copy’ representing the other.

I'm about to embark on a listen through of some of the stuff in this thread, so I will listen to this too.

Does anybody have any opinions of or experience with this online mastering program? I really want to get my debut album out very soon (since I'm sitting on a second album as well) and I think this could save time and money. But I'm not sure about the reputability.

I've finished cover art and I am currently doing final clean ups of the tracks. I am ready.

I also want to get some physicals made to give to people who have been supportive about my music.

I am accumulating demos for a third album very fast, so it is TIME to release that debut album (which now has artwork!). It will absolutely happen this summer no matter how satisfied I am with the finished mastered product. It's essentially lo-fi music, so I need to stop worrying so much about how it sounds. It's clearly a DYI project but the songs are very good and unpolished good songs are better than polished bad songs. Basically, I do catchy poetry!

I'm thinking of doing a very long third album, the kind of messy lack of self-editing thing that Taylor did, just with more sonic variety. Her cathartic "let it all out" approach was very intriguing. It just blended together a bit too much.

Hey!

Dropped my 5th song this morning!

The idea came to me in a sunny walk one morning, i initially wanted to call it Mourn and have it as that play on duality but not as promotable haha!

I’ve had a bit of a spike on Spotify on my other songs so figure how’s the time to drop another!

Love the vocal production on this.

Between two albums (one of which I hope to release this summer; just finalized the cover art), a few shelved songs and demos, and all the new demos I’ve been making, I’ll have written 40 songs once I record a demo of this new song I’m working on.

A somewhat cheeky plug to like/subscribe/donate to my own youtube channel.

Who Da Nam?

I'm a classically trained musician (32+ years of playing the piano, 20 years of the oboe), and have been teaching the piano in the Seattle WA area for 4+ years. My performance taste is pretty diverse, over the years I've expanded into playing pop music and video game music. There are also some Taskmaster and other artsy projects on the channel.

At the beginning of 2024, I went self employed (mixture of teaching and performing, volunteer HOA business, data consultancy eventually) so definitely have been watching my finances more closely.

Here are some videos that will appeal to the PJ audience.

I hope some of you enjoy these performances.

I had already written nearly two albums worth of material (along with some discarded demos and what not) by the time I discovered this book, so I'm not sure how well it works in terms of writing a fist song and you guys are also past that first song stage, but it's a really good read if you're feeling uninspired. Tweedy's description of his craft is pretty inspiring and the book is so warm and conversational:

How To Write One Song

It's also good to get the perspective of a celebrated songwriter even if the Wilco listening audience on this forum is probably not too big haha.

I'm just figuring out what route I want to go for mastering and I'll ready to drop my debut. I've given myself until the end of this month, when I get a bigger than usual paycheck, to finalize my decision.

It'll be a good thing because I have a whole second (better) album that I'm going to drop in the winter and I have eleven demos (albums one and two are both thirteen tracks) I like for a third project.

I've been playing with music production as a creative outlet for the last ~10 years. I only know the basic of music theory, only know a few guitar chords and I've never really mastered anything at all but, with this pun indeed, I've decided to start sharing a few pieces because who knows?? It's also a fun thing to talk about.
