Neighbours - unmissable drama

  1. Although I don't watch soaps, you sort of assume they're always going to be there in the background, so it's a strange feeling when one of them ends. I can only really compare it to when Brookside got cancelled in 2003, and in that particular case, they'd run the show so far into the ground that nobody really gave a shit by the end (I'm sure the final episode aired in the middle of the night). In this case, while its days as a cultural phenomenon were long behind it, the show still has a nostalgic place in people's hearts and it's good that it was given a proper farewell.

I stopped watching years before Margot joined, but considering she's a two time Oscar nominee and the lead in what's already the most talked about film of next year, it was great to see she made an appearance. The best people never forget how they came up.
  2. Neighbours bowed out with 1.2 million viewers as the #1 show across Australia yesterday peaking at 1.4m. That's 10 times the ratings it has been getting nightly this year - I think we can expect big numbers from the UK.

  3. Not this Dylan Timmons crashing his own funeral erasure! That was iconic.

  4. Love how much of the final episodes centred around Izzy. Deserved!
  5. Where the fuck are Caroline and Christina?

  6. Really such a perfect ending. Susan’s monologue killed me.

  7. That was a really lovely ending. The best way the show could have ended. Despite it being the finale I felt quite sad at everyone moving away, so it was nice to have them all change their minds.

Ending it with a wedding and a party was just the most perfect way to do it. Celebrate what has been an iconic show and an iconic cast of characters.

The returnees all through this final week have been spot on. The “ghosts” were a nice touch, although I almost lost it at seeing Sonia - I don’t think I’ll ever be over her death. Kylie not really saying anything felt odd, but I’m guessing there was some reason for that.

During the episode I thought it’s nice how for the last couple of years we’ve had so many legacy characters at the forefront of the show - Susan & Karl (of course), but also Jane, Clive, Mel, Amy. Having Jane be the centre of the storyline for the finale was unexpected but a nice touch. There’s always been an underlying sadness around Jane’s character since her return, so I appreciated seeing her getting her happy ending. And with a full on snack as well!

There’s really not much I can say about Susan’s monologue to do it justice, but I think it echoed every fan’s thoughts about the show.

I’ve said it before, but I am going to miss this show so much. The street and the characters have meant a lot to me for a very long time, has always been a part of my life - even when I wasn’t regularly watching - but I hope the cast and crew are proud of that final episode (and final week) because it was absolutely everything.

What a beautiful ending! I don’t think they could have done it any better. That last monologue from Susan, the characters that had passed away, the cancelled house moves, the returnees.

Now THAT is how you end a show.

    Susan’s monologue was stunning television.

  10. Susan's monologue was perfect. I particularly enjoyed the "watching us from afar" comment.

Bald Karl is also giving me Alf from Home and Way vibes...

Random question, does anyone know if Kylie can actually drive? Charlene was driving the mini (and rudely parked it RIGHT in the middle of the street) so was wondering if they had a stunt driver...

  11. I also wondered why Kylie was basically mute apart from ‘Home sweet home’.

Was she charging $1million per spoken word?

  12. Did we get any scenes of Lauren thirsting for men by the pool?

  13. It was sweet but the editing was a bit weird. Scott and Charlene meeting Jane and Mike on the street - but the wedding is also happening yet no sign of that while they are all there!
  14. The end credits were a lovely nostalgic touch, although it was funny that the Willis family picture was incomplete because Doug and Pam's four children were never all in it at the same time. I don't even think they all showed up to Cody's funeral (although she was a pain in the ass so I couldn't really blame them)

  15. Oh I forgot. Jason's entry line of "Wow, Wow, Wow!" was an ode to Kylie's "Wow" I'm hoping!

Would have loved more song name dropping from Kylie and others.

Did anyone else find Holly's "He always fancied him a bit of a singer..." Comment about Karl's singing particularly snarky?

  18. Cody 1 was a pain but Cody 2 was quite alright. The Neighbours nerd in me still remembers the actors' names (Amelia Frid and Peta Brady).

She appeared for about 10 seconds with Terese and Paige, telling Terese that her and Paul were meant for each other.

I’ll miss everyone, especially Nicolette. She ate everyone up from the second she was introduced. I’m glad they got a lot out of that character.

  20. The finale was beautifully done and I loved the Neighbours Made Me A Star documentary, too. Maybe they should have included just a little snippet of Kylie performing live (preferably Glastonbury) to visualise her impact.

Neighbours was an iconic show which gave a lot to so many cast members and was like a comfort blanket for us viewers - I’m sad it’s gone!

Has there ever been a Casting Director as on-point as Jan Russ? That lady seriously knew her stuff. Just wow.
