Nicki Minaj - "Red Ruby Da Sleeze"

she/her
Also did Myriam ever apologize for the blackface she did a few years ago? Everything about this collab is a literal mess.
I wish she did, but back then I remember her just celebrating the views of her song, so I imagine she didn't. And apparently Goumi was the one song of hers that went viral on TikTok? Of all her nearly flawless discography let's make her racist release popular!!!!!!

Her team is nuts for not dropping an album in the back-half of last year. Super Freaky Girl is still top 10 on US radio, top 100 on Spotify, and aiming for a return to the top 20 on Billboard next week. And it was her biggest international hit in ages. Such a massive missed opportunity.

Nicki has used obvious samples her entire career, it's a pretty common staple in rap. Your Love, Blazin, Check It Out, Anaconda, Barbie Dreams... not to mention all her mixtape stuff.
I know that sampling is a very common practice in hip-hop. It's more that she's following "Super Freaky Girl," which relied heavily on the Rick James sample, with another single that relies on a sample.

That being said, I haven't heard "Red Ruby Da Sleeze," so I have no idea if the sample of "Never Leave You" will be a core component of the track or if it's just a part of a larger picture.

Going by that Twitter snippet she took the whole instrumental and the Uuh oohs. Brillant move actually, should be an easy hit. Would be great to see Lumidee credited.

This feels like an updated version of something from her mixtapes, which is probably what she was going for - tons of flow switches, a bunch of great bars, perfect sample. Especially once she gets going in the last verse, she really hits her stride.

I can't seem to find the interaction anymore—I thought that it was a tweet, but it might've been via Instagram comments—where someone asked Nicki if Lumidee would make a cameo in the MV and Nicki said that she hadn't even considered filming an MV for this because this is her "street shiii" or something along those lines and now that I've heard "Red Ruby Da Sleeze," I get it now. I was too quick to dismiss the use of the Lumidee sample as another attempt to recreate another pop-rap crossover single a la "Anaconda" and "Super Freaky Girl," but this is like a hip-hop record.
