Fire Emblem can be a very punishing series nn. With permadeath, once a unit runs out of health in combat they're dead for good. Later entries allow you to turn this mechanic off or tinker with it. In terms of entry points, it depends what software options you have: Three Houses is great but the least conventional Fire Emblem experience, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend it as a starting point. If you have the resources to start with Awakening on 3DS that's the most accessible game in terms of being able to turn off permadeath while introducing more of the modern mechanics that have persisted in the series.

If you're strictly looking for options on the Switch I think the only entry they've ported is the original NES and I...wouldn't recommend starting there. I still think Three Houses is worth playing, it's a ton of fun especially the first go around, but just be aware Engage will likely be quite a bit different!

Thanks for the reply! I don’t have a 3DS, they don’t have any entry on the wii u for example right? I’ve heard quite a lot positive comments about Three Houses and there is something about that story that seems quite intriguing! But yeah, what I’ve understood is that some battles can be looong. And that’s what worries me a bit ddd. My job and gaming doesn’t really go hand in hand haha.

They actually have both US GBA games on the Wii U as well as the DS remake of the first game (ugly but effective)! Maybe there's a workaround but the reason I didn't mention this is that Nintendo stopped allowing online purchases on the Wii U online store sometime last year: I tried to get on and snag the DS remake myself and ran into this. I think you may still be able to spend funds that are already in your online wallet though?

oh right this was recently! I don’t even have an online account for the wii u, never had. Maybe I can Google my way to see if they can be bought used in physical form. Otherwise maybe Engage will be my first entry into the series!

You can actually still buy digital gift cards for the 3DS/Wii U shop (at least in Europe, not 100 % sure about elsewhere) online and use that credit for purchases. However, in March it's gonna close for good, so you probably shouldn't wait too long. There are quite a few titles aside from Fire Emblem that might be worth getting while you still can since they're not available via the Switch and probably won't be anytime soon. Or ever, at this point.
e.g. Zelda: The Minish Cap, Super Mario Advance 4 including the e-reader levels, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, Pokémon Ranger, the Golden Sun games...

Playing Azure Moon on Maddening/Classic was… a choice (I will never make again.)

Fire Emblem Engage looks to be getting good-to-great reviews, which is reassuring. I still don't know if I'll pick it up right away, but I'm glad to hear there's more focus on combat in this one.

Spent the weekend with Engage and while the Genshin Impact animation style is a lot to get used to, the combat is better than ever. I personally felt like the monastery content in Three Houses was promising but really bogged down the experience in the second half of that game, so I'm happy to see they kept the elements that I mostly liked while abandoning the ones I didn't. The ring mechanic and re-worked abilities are welcome changes to Three Houses as well. I decided to start on Hard Classic so it was kicking my ass a bit but there are enough resources to not make it feel too punishing.

Don't ask me a single question about the plot though!

Engage hasn't really been on my radar, but reading it's more streamlined and combat-oriented definitely piqued my interest. I liked Three Houses, but there were so many things to keep track of it did get a bit overwhelming. I still need to get around to actually beating it ff

That part, I am pleasantly surprised; but yeah, the plot is terrible.

And Céline? Oh, she’s serving CUNT.

Céline and Chloé hard carrying so far while being the girliest girls?

I'm honestly craving a Nintendo direct as we're long overdue a big Zelda blowout and I really want to know what games are coming in the back half of 2023.

Gamefreak announcing Scarlet/Violet DLC before they've released the patch they promised... certainly sounds like Gamefreak woudl do.
