    Everything in Time (Los Angeles)

    Average score: 7.194

    Highest score: 9 x 4 (@Damita Jo, @BEST FICTION, @AshleyKerwin, @Music Is Death)
    Lowest score: 5 x 3 (@DJHazey, @Maria, @Ana Raquel)
    My score: 6.75

    High peak: #65 (22, 27 voters)
    Low peak: #85 (5 voters)

Only 0.05 points away from "Sixteen", it's time (pun intended) to lose the third song form the "Return of Saturn" section, which, contrary to the previous elimination, ended up in its peak position. It did start on a bit of a wobbly note, but managed to gain higher scores - receiving half of its 9's within the last 4 voters - and constantly improved its placement. This is also the first out of five unreleased songs that were later officially released to leave the rate.

Since there are two versions of the song, I'll focus on their backgrounds here, and save the song review and further insight when London version gets eliminated. First of all, why did I include both versions, when I could've just paired them and let you assign a score to your preferred one? Well, prior to finishing the song list and opening the rate, I had no idea which one was the original (had I known that, things might've been different). But there's also a big factor of the apparent sonic and lyrical differences that made me treat them separately. It's a weird situation because it's not a classic 'remix' type of thing, but, hey, at least it helped the song list get to that magical number 100 and satisfy my moderate OCD.

Now we got that clear, let's get to the boring stuff - but those of you who like history shouldn't be bored. "Everything in Time (Los Angeles)" was written by Eric Stefani and Gwen Stefani, possibly in June 1998, when Gwen brought her brother back for some writing sessions. The Los Angeles version came first and the song possibly had a working title of "Everything Always". The song came almost instantaneously but didn't make the cut for "Return of Saturn", with "Too Late" taking its place on the album. No Doubt has once said that this song "was a hard one to let go." I say they made a wise choice despite there being a song from the actual album I scored lower. That's how the LA got into the parenthesis of the title. And the London version has the same 'nickname' for similar reason, but a different background. During the "Rock Steady" writing sessions in London, Gwen and album producers went back to the song and worked out a slower version of the song. But again, while "Rock Steady" was starting to take shape, the song again was placed aside since it didn’t fit in with the rest of the material. I say they made a wise choice x2. Twice recorded, twice discarded... and eventually twice eliminated.

And of course you had to eliminate the version I prefer first. This song is... a fine ballad. And since there are definite career highlights in that run, it would be a reach to list "Everything in Time (Los Angeles)" as one of them. In fact, it's one of my least favourite slow songs that No Doubt did. It's good that my score for it is this 'high', because if I had to rate it several years ago, it would probably meander around 5.5. It definitely used to be one of those songs that I mostly just want to end. From a technical standpoint, it's hard to fault, has an ~atmospheric~ production reminiscent of "Return of Saturn", an established lyrical vision and execution (at least to a certain point), but it's kind of boring in the long run.
We'll talk about it more in detail, so let me shut up now and see what you had to say about the song.

Apparently, not much. @Sprockrooster (8.5) and @berserkboi (8.5) are being twinsies with their scores - Sprocky says: "When the guitar comes in the track transforms into a grand opus.", while berserky concludes: "Enjoying this mellow moment a lot!" Evidently, not everyone was impressed by this version. Among them is @Angeleyes (6), who makes his choice clear: "See my commentary for the London version, but in short, I prefer that one." Hmm, we obviously can't see it yet because the London version (hopefully soon). But, as the song itself says:

"Everything I hope in time will come..."

Next up: Disastrous loss. The greatest amount of perfect scores so far, too.
Needless to say, I'm not looking forward to that one.

  2. Thank God, both versions are dull as hell.

I love mess, regarding the next cut.

  3. The next elimination...

Maybe this rate was a mistake.

  4. It's Let's Get Back, isn't it...

  5. Has everyone tried the Tragic Kingdom album track section? I thought the Tragic Kingdom album track section would be lovely to lose another few songs.

  6. For those wondering about this hint, "Everything in Time (Los Angeles)" is the 7th track on "Everything in Time" compilation.

The next song to leave, however, has a lower number in the tracklist. To quote "Everything in Time (Los Angeles)":

  7. I second this!

  8. Love how you always give us those clever hints that my potato brain simply isn't smart enough to compute @Maki.

  9. Glad you appreciate that.
Though I should also give you some eliminations, huh?

Well, for the past few days there have been persistent and long storms (hi, @soratami!), ocurring literally every few hours which caused me to have limited internet and PC access and couldn't properly focus on write-ups. Luckily, tomorrow afternoon, the weather should return to normal and we'll hopefully find out what is that tragic elimination I'm talking about.

  10. The tag made me think Let's Get Back was being eliminated dd

  11. The forum is doing its thing again, so finishing up the elimination post is taking longer than expected. In the meantime, let's do... something.
Months ago, I saw that No Doubt discography rate was once held on Reddit and the resuts are quite a mess (then again, the voters could choose how many songs they scored and I agree with some of deep cuts getting justice):

    94. Hateful | 5.143

(the rate featured 102 songs including some remixes and live songs, so I just erased these from the ranking, and didn't include the three demos and two rare early songs that appear here, along with joining the two versions of "Everything in Time").

  12. As much as I love this winner - I really hope it is not a cover that wins this rate when they have so much excellent original material!

  13. I do love the concept of a greatest hits single being the greatest hit in a rate. We need a rate where this happens.

Maki, Untouchable Ace and berserkboi like this.
  14. There's a song that made the Top 15, which is a complete mess and better not do it again!

  15. Just say Oi To The World dd. I do think it's a great song but definitely not top 15 material.

  16. Well, looking at Hazey's scores, I think he's referring to a different song.

  17. Oi to the World I'm actually fine with, as @Maki alluded to, I have another score that is likely to make waves and be the lowest.

  18. For simplicity's sake, here are the placements of the songs in the aforementioned Reddit rate that already got eliminated here, compared to their placements on PJ forum:

    20. Everything in Time → #65 (Los Angeles) / #? (London)
    28. Sixteen → #66
    34. Under Construction → #67
    37. Total Hate '95 → #87
    38. Stricken → #72
    47. Sailin' On → #77
    53. Staring Problem → #75
    54. Sometimes → #69
    57. Doormat → #95
    58. Sinking → #83
    59. World Go 'Round → #79
    64. A Little Something Refreshing → #99
    65. Brand New Day → #85
    66. Snakes → #71
    68. Start the Fire → #70
    71. That's Just Me → #74
    74. Paulina → #98
    77. Get On the Ball → #89
    78. Move On → #97
    79. Sad for Me → #91
    80. Blue in the Face → #78
    81. Squeal → #92
    82. Doghouse → #76
    86. Big City Train → #81
    87. I Throw My Toys Around → #82
    88. Ache → #80
    89. My Room Is Still Clean → #100
    91. Undone → #68
    92. Monkey Man → #93
    93. You Can't Teach an Ol' Dog New Tricks → #94
    94. Hateful → #84

It's not 100% accurate when it comes to proportion, since there are six more songs included in this rate, though it's a cool coincidence how the three highest rated tracks so far are in the exact same order.

And I really hope we get to the next page soon because the next elimination is nearly ready.

  19. Well you better be referring to either Spiderwebs or Push And Shove then, because everything else in that top 15 is a 9+

berserkboi, Maki and DJHazey like this.
  20. Yikes, I have no idea why the song I'm referring to would ever get a 9 or above.
