Normani - "1:59" (feat. Gunna) [Apr 26] + DOPAMINE (TBD)

she/they
Jokes at the expense of someone's name can cut deep with anyone who has been taunted, ridiculed or had their name intentionally mispronounced because it's a little unusual. It can feel uncomfortably dehumanising.
At the end of day yes... Camila is a Latina, a white Latina, but still a Latina. Can we not with jokes about her name.
My jokes about her name are not meant to be discriminatory. It's really in the same vein as me referring to Marina and the Diamonds as "Marinara" or referring to Charli XCX as "Charli XBOX." I understand where you two are coming from, but I promise it's in silly jest. I acknowledge what you both are saying.

I was literally typing up the same thing, except my example was Areola Venti. I fully understand what @Mr.Arroz is saying, and I'm sorry if it sounded discriminatory.

OK, cool, but Latinx names usually get jokes about them whether it's "meant to be discriminatory" or not. It's not too far off from people being like "well...I wasn't meaning to do Blackface...but like... it happened! Hopefully you see the humor in what I meant!" or the vitiligo makeup thing on Twitter rn. Just...don't do it. I don't care if your intent was humor. You can't divorce that from how names of color, especially Latinx ones, in this case get treated. All my life I've been called Fernando by non-Latinx people when my name is... Alexandro. It's not funny.

Being Sri Lankan you can imagine the abuse I get daily for my longer-than-most surname so I concur.

This practice of ridiculing names is belittling and dangerous.

Honest to god, this thread needs to relax. Why people pop in to make others feel bad/inferior is beyond me. The constant moral compass grates a little. The people in question should check up on the Ed Sheeren/Phil Collins thread if they want to vilify members of this forum.

One rule for a fave, another rule for a foe.

I think the Coleen Nolan running joke was a bit niche for the Normani thread, especially using it for Latinx names. Read the room, girls.

I’m disappointed that this isn’t blowing up quite the way I thought it was going to, I still think it’s going to be massive eventually though. Looking forward to the next live performance.

It's not gonna suddenly take off now. Everything has happened already - video, big performance etc. It will do quite nicely to become a small-medium sized streaming hit (like Mother's Daughter/Slide Away) but she needs a bigger song to get that breakout hit.
