Not That Kind of Rate: Anastacia | Finished

Day 3 of not looking at the leaderboard...

A bit surprised this escaped bottom 10 and it hasn't been called for yet. Also a song that ended on it's highest position. Not many of those just yet.

I adore that alternate cover for her first greatest hits and could not resist using it. This felt the most applicable. How fitting that our house DJ is the highest scorer. Honestly there are moments I stan this hard (moreso during the time of the release than now), but there are also moments it is an easy skip. Probably the most hardest song to rate here. A mashup of several remixed and honestly I love most of them and also their transitions. But listening to it often really makes you grow tired of it fast. The song was a promo single for the clubs and also got a video just like the Britney megamix released earlier. A megamix I stan more than the Anastacia if I am completely honest. Simply because it features more songs and is shorter. What is the point of doing a megamix of just 5 songs like the one from Anastacia. Yeah they kept out all the mediocre or terrible chart hits, but we still needed more than Left Outside Alone, Sick & Tired, Paid My Dues, One Day In Your Life and I’m Outta Love. It would be shown with the music video highlighting most of the music videos (from also songs that are not in this mix such as Cowboys & Kisses) in the clubs and it was nice. It didn’t really chart anywhere. Well that is a non-shocker.

@londonrain has a question and the answer is yes: "This is so unnecessary. Are there people who actually listen to this all the way through?" You do realise there is radio edit of over 5 minutes as b-side for the Pieces of a Dream single. @berserkboi makes a point "Fun I guess? But nothing beats the mixes of the originals?" Basically me with almost every remix. @Maki explains his average score "I gave this a 10 for the remixing/song choices, and a 1 for its importance in this rate, so the average score it is." I love how @livefrommelbs always helps to make sure a writeup ends positively "Tits FLEW! I'd lose my bananas if some of these remixes came on in a club. Nearly 12-minutes is a little much for this attention span, but the highs (pun intended) are truly there."

Good start of today's cuts.

Club Megamix - 5,5
~ Definitely the most unnecessary "song" of this rate. My commentary basically says it all. I insisted that it should be excluded from this rate, considering it's not really a new song, but it's single status is what kept it in the end. Should've been in the bottom 10, though I understand that it had some of you bopping which resulted in multiple 8+ scores.
Admittedly, I haven't listened to the entire song while rating, but I have heard it in full at least once before, and therefore can confirm that the song choices and transitions between them are ace.
Probably the most hardest song to rate here.
This I agree with.

Also, here's the full version (I literally forgot it was available via YouTube):

I am probably using the phrase incorrectly. In a past rate, the song “Maybe” by Emma Bunton stuck around for much longer than everyone expected. So I was trying to say that Wonderwall is the song I would keep wanting to get eliminated despite it still surviving.
Oh, okay, thanks for clarifying. I thought it could be that song for a moment, but it's actually a great song, so it seemed weird to be comparing it.

Edit: I'm re-listening to "Club Megamix" in full now and that "One Day in Your Life" breakdown around the 9 minute mark really goes hard.

Our next loss brings us to losing over half of the It's A Man's World album. Poor dat.

Yeah, Mary J. Blige did it better. Also better than U2 quite frankly (and I am U2 fan). Next.

Oh wait. There is commentary: @berserkboi says "Nice? Seriously lacking in trademark grit though which is surprising!" @londonrain is halfway the album and already goddamn tired "The whole issue with this album is that it's essentially a karaoke album of covers that are so faithful to the original that they offer nothing new at all. This is like a particularly dull X Factor winner's album, not a late-career album from a hugely accomplished artist." @Maki is lukewarm towards it "I like the emotional edge here - makes it stand out a bit. Very pretty, but still far from excellent."

Megamix | 9.5 | Yeah @Sprockrooster I don't know if that changes the average for it because you have me listed as a 9, so the resident DJ actually stanned even harder dd! I don't know, I was getting every bit of my life from it, but maybe it will grow old over time and maybe it is too long, and maybe it's not an original song, who cares it bops so hard I could care less. Knew it'd be my first high score out.

One | 8.25 | Actually this is favorite from the covers album. I didn't know I was going to even know this when I saw the title and that it was a U2 cover since I don't know very many of their songs, but it was instantly recognizable and the chorus pops up a bit. I'd have to hear a medley of U2's biggest hits to remember which one I'm thinking of, but there's a big song of theirs I've always loved and if she did that one it'd be a 10 for sure.

I have 9,5 indeed. I didn't adjust the write-up.

Let it be known that 'Sexy Single' survives
Who knew? Guess being placed on self-titled comes with priviledges.

An optional goes. A song written by the same team who wrote Sexy Single. This is so wrong. Started of in the top 25. But the descension was real.

Amandla
Average: 6,25
Highest:
9,5
@Sprockrooster
Lowest: 1,0 @Hurricane Drunk
Sprocky's score: 9,5

After her trials and tribulations with breast cancer this was the first official new release. It was however tied to the 46664 concert for Nelson Mandela. Many artists performed to celebrate the accomplishments from Nelson Mandela. Amandla was recorded to promote this concert as the artists mostly sang their own material. Anastacia was among the few who did not as she was there alongside QUEEN and being the vocalist for their songs We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions.

Amandla deals with overcoming AIDS and other aspects where people in several African countries have to deal with. The studio version is basically only Anastacia (alongside the speech of Andrews Bonsu). During the live performance she is joined by Bono, Dave Stewards, Beyoncé, YoussoN’Dour, Queen on the instruments and an entire background choir. An absolute star studded line up for a single song. I am not overreacting if I say that I might see this as the best live performance ever. I remember being in shock the first time I saw and still am. Yes, there might be a hint of white saviour complex, but that for me is eclipsed by the power that is felt through the screen. @londonrain however will not have it "Muffy, sis, the overbearing schmaltz. The lyrics to the chorus are lazy as hell, and the spoken part where America and Africa are referred to as "two countries"... confusedguyblinking.gif" @Maki is not a fan either "The verses are a big void - I forget them as soon as they end. Luckily, the anthemic chorus is there, but I'm still not really impressed. Cute charity song."

The lyrics to the song say literally nothing apart from “let the people rise up together”, which is a perfectly good sentiment and fits the context of “amandla”, but then it says... nothing else. It’s the most watered-down of protest songs... there’s no indication of what is being protested or why, and no explanation for the lyrics. Co-opting a term used by poor South African people to assert their power to create a song sung by a wealthy white American with no context... yeah, hard pass.

One of the most recent episodes of the Switched On Pop podcast was was about 'empty protest songs' (in which my poor Alicia's song 'Underdog' got rightfully dragged.) Anyways, I liked reading your take, here.

'One' in my first real loss so far. That was my highest rated song on It's A Man's World (9.1). It's nothing spectacular, but unlike most the of other songs on album I appreciated that the production took an approach above sounding kinda copycat. Her vocal is great on it, too.

~ Not an ideal cut from this album, but I'm not bothered. This one benefited from me actually liking the original song, so it received a decent score.

Amandla - 6
~ Nice elimination. This is so weak and lukewarm for an empowerment/protest song. I'd even say this score I gave it was a bit too generous (though it benefited a bit due to being an optional), since I could never imagine myself playing this song on purpose.
I can understand some voters being more keen on it having witnessed or watched that performance, but the studio version is just bland.

It makes perfect sense for you to be the highest scorer of this remix. In fact, you're the only voter who gave it a score in the 9+ stretch. Also, I wanted to point out the score mistype to @Sprockrooster, but wasn't sure if it was the case or the leaderboard wasn't updated for me.

I really hope you won't mind if I occasionally mention these minor typos and slip-ups when it comes to scores/averages, Sprocky.

Club Megamix - 6. 'Probably the most hardest song to rate here.' This part. In the end I just gave it a middling score for all the good songs it contains.

One - 6. My second highest album score. Just for the actual song itself rather than this version of it

Amandla - 6.9. I echo other people's sentiments about the song but it still got a good score because the melody is quite nice.

Use Somebody still being here is a surprise. I thought this forum LOATHED that song.
Me too. Thank God someone jynxed it. I can't believe it made top 5 on the album.

Choices and questions about wondering why are the chore of this album and there is no song that embodies it better than this massively overplayed one. Imagine being filler on a superfluous album. Next. Oh wait we have commentary. Let's go for shock first: "I've never heard the original of this song before. A bit too derivative compared to the rest, but the middle-8 made me bump its score a bit." I... Another opinion is coming from @berserkboi "Comes close to the urgency of Kings Of Leon!" Christ. Save me @londonrain "Kings of Leon? On my Popjustice?" and he asks me to post a image and let me say it applies to more than this song.

~ The elimination from this album I was hoping for. Also:
"I've never heard the original of this song before. A bit too derivative compared to the rest, but the middle-8 made me bump its score a bit."
Yep. That's me. Perhaps I lied and may have heard the original on the radio before, but I literally can't recall knowing that song. That "I'm waitin'..." bit is my favourite, but otherwise it's very disposable and perhaps I was too generous with this score.

And suddenly I'm starting to think that "Sexy Single" has a chance of reaching top 100. Hope I'm wrong.
