Not That Kind of Rate: Anastacia | Finished

@Sprockrooster here's some more to add to your playlist!

Why is spotify Netherlands so Goddamn hateful??? What I would give to hear We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions on a regular basis while driving or cycling. I literally have to youtube stream it or put my DVD on. I am so messaging Anastacia about all of this when I finish all the rarities as I am legit scared to find out what else is left that I have been missing.

Oncoming Train" and "Resurrection
I am counting those - also in upcoming stats - as main album tracks as Resurrection is her only deluxe album and it has a digital bonustrack being Underdog. Freak of Nature probably fits the bill more actually as having bonustracks.

After all the shit she sang about on the album this feels like the clouds are breaking up and the sun is coming back. It is like a big hug on a journey full of pain. Sonically it doesn’t fit in as it sounds very soul and lacks any rockvibe. But that is exactly the strength of this song. Like all the pain is put in the raging electric guitar and the hope and positivity is embodied in this track. This was an early standout for me and it still holds up very well. It is from the tracks she did with male part of Eurythmics Dave Stewart (the others being Sexy Single, Amandla) my favourite so justice it won out of these there, but that means Dave Stewart is out. However @Maki comes with a controversial opinion again "Underwhelming closer, but I prefer it over "Sexy Single". The verses are the best part of the song (and remind me of "Welcome to My Truth" verses), the chorus is too bland for me. I gets boring and drags a bit too long, but not bad at all." You call it underwhelming ánd compare it Welcome To My Truth. SIS!! Save this paragraph from us @berserkboi "As per above, and hints of Beautiful musically!" Thank you.

~ The correct second cut from the self-titled. I even prefer all of the B-sides from this era over it. As mentioned, I really like the moody verses, but the chorus is quite boring in its Disney-esque glory and gets repetitive. A pretty song and a commendable delicate delivery, that's for sure, but obviously among her weakest album closers. The comparison with "Welcome to My Truth" is purely on a melodic aspect (and refers to the first lines in the verses). Maybe if it was a minute shorter, I would've rated it slightly higher. It might just be that the song isn't depressive/dark enough for which is the reason why I don't like it much oop.
Didn't expect it to leave before all of the "Resurrection" ballads, but here's hoping that some of them are being eliminated very soon (or... maybe today pun intended).

The next cut from "Anastacia" should be "Pretty Little Dum Dum" (not counting the B-sides, obviously), but it definitely deserves to stay longer.

A bit late with every reveal today cause it is one of those days. But we are back to slaying songs from Sprock albums. But not self-titled. And again no ballad but the first song with the 5,5 average.

Clearly Resurrection needed a song with a bit of non-sensical lyrics to have a throwback to Sexy Single. Thank God it doesn’t go all the way, but for a long time I just could not figure what this song was actually about. But the popcorn references to her hyperactive quirky side of things, but the dark in the title is a bit of homonym. She was often thought of as a singer of black origin with her voice when people listened on the radio. But dark also throws back on the issues she dealt with in her life. And that is where hell storm refers to. Not everything makes sense to me from this track, but it probably never will. She sings story is clear so maybe I am missing the obvious. This track was also a b-side for Stupid Little Things making it the second track we would know for this era ánd also making it the last b-side she had. Well I would not have minded it if this remained a b-side. But somehow it got highlighted even more as it was one of the tracks that made the A4APP album. Poor Apology.

@livefrommelbs inspired me for the artwork "When Anastacia said 'I'm popcorn', I felt that." Are you a sweet, salty or both kind of guy? @Maki noticed this particular lyric too so what flavour is your fave? "Again, I really enjoy the verses, but the chorus doesn't reach its potential. Luckily, the middle-8 is great and makes me give it an acceptable score. Also, "I'm popcorn" is such an endearing and memorable line to me for some reason." Let's hear from highest scorer @berserkboi "Stronger than I anticipated!". @londonrain will not have it though "She always seemed very invested in this "dark white girl" description but I just don't think it works."

This tandem of frequent low scorers, though. Also, @londonrain which ballads exactly did you rescue? The results so far don't match your statement at all, hehe.
My Everything and Left Outside Alone Part 2 got an 8 and a 9 respectively. Basically I rescued the ones from the later albums. The ones on the first two albums are... variable. (You’ll Never Be Alone remains her best ballad from that part of her career.)

Maybe Today - 7.1. My lowest score on the main album. The lyrics are good but it goes on a bit too long and the melody is not memorable, although nice whilst listening.

Dark White Girl - 6.8. I didn't understand the lyrics before but the elimination post gave me more of an appreciation and understanding of them. I like the chorus melody and production. I underscored it slightly.

The final song from a Sprock album to leave today is a ballad. And it is the first one from Resurrection making that album lose 2 songs in a row. A 10 from me and the song ends sadly on it's lowest position.

She has two songs on Resurrection referencing her trials with her second battle with breast cancer, that was also more aggressive. The othersong being Broken Wings. But for me this ballad is thé sister song to Heavy On My Heart. “I’m not ready to go just yet” is a crystal clear message and sometimes things do not need a metaphor to either sugarcoat or make it more strong artistically. She is full of life and was legit scared for her life when she got ill again. In the artwork above I used a photo from a shoot where she shows her scars after her double mastectomy. She has written song titles all over her body but as you can see Stay got a prominent place making it a precious song to her. It was therefore no surprise it got a place on her Resurrection tour and one of her best vocal performances. And it would not be an Anastacia song if there is some hope to juxtapose with the darkness and as a true survivor she is telling herself she is going to stay at the end of the song. She will not lose this battle. And she kept her word. She stayed.

Well. Not everyone was enarmoured by this track. Starting with @Maki "The most unnecessary ballad of this album, even though the lyrics are very nice. I really like the verses and the string elements, but it just drags. The chorus is underwhelming and doesn't exactly have a melody that pleases me, despite the vocal delivery." The fact you are partly right calling it an unnecessary ballad as it is the first ballad out from the album. A deep sadness. @londonrain is no fan either "Serving Eurovision NQ realness. This should be incredible with a vocalist of her calibre but the songwriting just isn't up to it." The fact I also stanned 2019's Moldavia entry also called Stay and being a NQ. Guess it is on brand. @berserkboi is a fan luckily and makes sure there is some positivity in this paragraph "Very pretty and emotively sung!"

Because I am helping a friend moving house we might have only 2 cuts. But perhaps 3. In all cases however we will only lose tracks that are not album tracks. So all the singles, b-sides, bonustracks, features and orphan songs should start shaking. I will also reveal the top 75 to see what is left.

he/him
Black Roses | 6.75 | Stock ballad that I agree is more R&B than rock.

Pendulum | 5.5 | The 'tick tock' and pulsating beat underscoring the song sets the table for something that should knock me off my feet more but damn the chorus is a dead halt to any progress.

Beautiful Messed Up World | 7.5 | Low key bop, not one I am running to hit repeat on or anything. The production pops off a bit from the onset and yes the post chorus is the big highlight.

Maybe Today | 6 | Yeah a real non-entity for me, especially after the rest of the album, Sexy Single aside.

Dark White Girl | 7 | I did wonder what this song title could possibly be referencing. It's okay until we arrive at the chorus when there is an extra pleading edge to Anastacia's vocals that work wonders for me.

Stay | 6.25 | This score seems high to me in retrospect. I am sorry to say there isn't anything memorable about it. Knowing the meaning behind it is great and I will remember that and appreciate it but not the song atrached to it. The most memorable this is how the opening pianos make me think "All My Life" by KC & Jo Jo is starting.

Dark White Girl - 7,25
~ Just as I mentioned remarkable consistent scores for "Beautiful Messed Up World" yesterday, here's a song that almost reached that level with a scoring gap being only 3.6 points, and it's more surprising in this case - I thought at least someone would give it a 10. Similarly to "Pendulum", I absolutely didn't expect this one to end up in the bottom 5 of this album, and it's my joint highest score for the album tracks (of the standard edition).
I like the intro guitar a lot and it has a nice progression, but still leaves me wanting more. And if the hook was slightly different, it would probably sound better to me.

Oh, and I love how everyone got so hooked onto the "I'm popcorn" lyric, because that perfectly describes Anastacia's (overly) energetic personality and made sense to me ever since hearing the song for the first time. The rest of the song is a bit confusing to understand, as well as the song title being a bit clunky, even though it makes sense for both interpretations. And depending on that interpretation of the song title, P!nk could've been a 'dark white girl' during her debut era, too (but that's much more due to the visuals rather than the vocals).

Stay - 5,75
~ Finally. My lowest score from "Resurrection" is gone. I kind of feel bad for this particular song having that "accolade", because the lyrics mean so much to her, but I just am not a fan of the melody and the song is rather boring. Of course, there are very pretty moments, but @londonrain put it nicely with the "Eurovision NQ" comment - it definitely exists, but doesn't stand out. That being said, I do like the melody of "I'm not ready to go just yet" part and agree that it's a great punchline.
This should've left at around when we lot the first "Resurrection" track, or at least before "Pendulum" and "Dark White Girl".

Even though I prefer "Apology" and "Broken Wings" over "Stay", I'm looking forward to either of them leaving soon. They're also quite Eurovision-y ballads in a non-exciting way.

I'm pretty happy with both of today's eliminations.

The Dark White Girl lyrics really are a bit confusing, but I guess what she's saying is there's both a dark/negative/sad and a light/positive/happy side to her, so if you combine both the colour you get is dark white (or light grey, but I guess Light Grey Girl would be an even odder song title).
