Not That Kind of Rate: Anastacia | Finished

The title track definitely deserves to be the last song standing from Heavy Rotation. Defeated is fine, but it really benefits from being the only one of the few strong tracks on a mediocre album to be a (half-asssed) single.

@londonrain "(Also, whoever spared us from JR Rotem using that fucking foghorn effect he used on all his other tracks of the time... THANK YOU.)"
I wanted to comment on this further @londonrain cause you are absolutely right. I would have taken half a point off if that was the case. The fact they licensed with Ne-Yo for the first two singles is such a miss and should have done with Jr Rotem and Darkchild who produced the two album winners in this rate respectively.

Defeated - 8. My joint lowest score left. I'm don't like the middle eight and I'm not keen on the beat, but the verse and chorus melodies are good and I like the piano.

I Call It Love - 10. My only top score on the album. I think they were going for a 60's 'mono' sound with the production which I don't mind. There's subtle instrumentation buried in the mix. I like the lyrics about being in love with someone, and people keep saying it's wrong for you, but it suits you. The chorus is addictive.

If we’re only losing singles today, can we lose Cowboys and Kisses and Lifeline, please?

Watch it be Everything Burns and Pieces of a Dream.

None of the above.

A cover from Christina Aguilera’s from the ill-recepted Lotus album making this the highest placed cover in this rate. Well done everyone! I guess Jamie Hartman felt like his song was wasted on Lotus and wanted to give it life here. And Anastacia embraced it instantly. After the lead-single for the Ultimate Collection ‘Take This Chance’ was ill-received by the fans this was rush released to promo this greatest hits. It got performed at Heaven Night Club for the first time and was also the stomping intro for her Ultimate Collection Tour. It did wonders for this song as I adore the Christina version, but due to that live performance I flipped to loving the Anastacia version more. Let me state clear they are quite similar so it is nitpicking. Fans love how it ties with the fan favourite Underground Army lyrically so it is a natural continuation for her.

For @livefrommelbs this was new "I wasn't sure how I'd find this one when it started, as I hadn't heard it before. But I really enjoyed it!" @berserkboi calls it "Inspirational and very pretty!" Obviously the comparison in the commentary is inevatible. Let's start with @Maki "Nice cover, though a bit random and . I prefer Xtina's version, but she did a great job, too. Also a tiny bit better than "Take This Chance"." The latter definitely. Perhaps @londonrain needed to hear this live "The Christina version is an easy 10. I'm docking a point just because this version takes too long to build up to the kind of power we all know Anastacia has. I'd have loved to hear a version with the song ramping up as quickly as the original does." Or not as it's live even longer ddd. @bonnieetclyde is team Anastacia on this one however "Always preferred Anastacia’s version over Christina’s. Her vocal delivery just works much better, despite not quite packing the same punch as the original." So what does noted X-tina fan @BEST FICTION think who gave out an 8,5 here. // *insert the Xtina elimination if it's out by the time this is ajsfafas*. Well it happened (CLICK ME) and let me say I am shook at the score you gave there.

Forgot to comment on these eliminations:

Who's Gonna Stop the Rain - 10
~ Aw, such a pity that this gem went before several jarringly inferior songs, since it's been a favourite of mine ever since I first heard it. I'm happy that it made it to the top 30, at least.
I was hoping that "Cowboys and Kisses" was going to leave before it, but the lack of taste won in the end.
Also, "Who's Gonna Stop the Rain" was a winner in "Not That Kind" album survivor on UKMIX forum, so at least justice has been served somewhere.

In Your Eyes - 7,25
~ I was surprised to see this little ballad go this far. Like I've said, it grew on me over time and it has some lovely vocals, though it just is too bland to have gotten to the top 30.

What Can We Do (A Deeper Love) - 7,5
~ Didn't expect this one to end up as the highest ranked optional, but then I recalled that there's that dance remix, which might've pushed it forward a bit. Anyways, this is a good song that certainly suits Anastacia, but it's a bit too simple and basic, and therefore not very notable. Then again, that simplicity is its charm. Oh, and I see that @Sprockrooster input my score as 7,25 in the spreadsheet, so hopefully that was resolved already and won't result in any position changes.

I Call It Love - 8
~ Had no idea what the general consensus was for this one, but it turned out to be rather great. The song doesn't stand out much in her discography, but it's quite interesting on its own. Kind of like a blend of 80's (in the synths) and 60's (in the beat) styles set to a catchy melody. I really enjoy the song, though it might be on a more generic side for a higher score. It did really well and it's not a loss for me, but there are a few weaker songs still around.

Defeated - 9
~ A moderate loss here. It was definitely a missed lead single opportunity. I was certain that this would end up as the winning track of "Heavy Rotation", as it's a fan-favourite, though it's nice to see that it gained a few fans here. It's in my top 3 from this album, but the title track is my 4th favourite, so I'm completely fine with it claiming the top spot of the album.
I hope that "Heave Rotation" will reach top 20, since "Defeated" deserved to remain until that point.

The top 23 was actually an intense battle trying to get in that top 20. We have a quite the jump in average from 8,33 to 8,47 clearly setting the remaining 23 songs apart from the rest. After Mr Vain and Where Do I Belong we find out which next person is losing it's 11. And it is the first time a single has one. AND IT IS THE FIRST TIME WE LOSE A SONG WHO ONCE WAS #1.

11 @bonnieetclyde

Commentary from bonnieetclyde: Still my favourite Anastacia track. I just love the lyrics, her vocals, the whole country-influence. This song grabbed me the very first time I heard it and has never weakened it’s grip on my heart. Wish she’d perform this live more often.

When you have an 11 and two 10's among the first three voters you are bound to be number 1, though I deemed it unlikely for this track to maintain. However being pushed outside the top 20 is simply overly vicious and savage. A FUCK UP! The music video for this single had the honour being the first one for Anastacia being followed with a camera crew for a making it. Shot at an airport the director explained Anastacia was pretty adamant about it not taking the obvious route with a rodeo for a theme. She did wear a cowboy hat ddd, but it is mostly amazing scenery (standing on an airplane) with a thin storyline of her being a female version James Bond (Never Gonna Love Again and Oncoming Train are shook). I was however captivated by it instantly and loved it immensely on impact. And I still do. In fact this was a strong 11-contender for me, cause this single is where my fandom for this women has started.

The country vibe works very well with her voice though most critics disagree with me. And so are the charts. Aside from Belgium, where this managed top 5 this was a big flop. I have to talk about the double echo adlib in the music video (also the tin tin out radio mix). That is one of her most amazing adlibs. The production literally did that. Alongside the single release there was also the release of an unplugged version. Many live performance were a hybrid of the regular and unplugged version. Right before the big adlib in the middle-8 of the regular version they would switch to the unplugged which is a bit more nice for her strut. She does however still sell the song as she shows a more restraint part of her vocal ability. Well, @londonrain was calling for it "A bit of a damp squib after the quality of the preceding songs. It's cute next to gorgeous." You are wrong. No cowboy kisses for you. @Maki is wrong too "Sorry, Sprocky, but I don't like this song. It's okay, but drags way too much and even though she delivers this style effciently, this is too much incognito country for me. Cute lyrics, but the song is as bland as can be." THAT ADLIB IS EVERYTHING BUT BLAND. Check your ears. Thank God for @berserkboi saving this commentary section "Here’s a song that’s aged well for me!" Finally, tea!

Tomorrow we lose an albumtrack and single from two different era's.

Army Of Me - 8.5. The first thing I thought when I saw the title was 'Ooh, she covered Bjork!' I hadn't heard the Christina original before, which I slightly prefer. Still Anastacia does a superb cover with a phenomenal vocal performance.

Cowboys And Kisses - 10. This is a perfect blend of country, pop and rock, acoustic guitar in the verses switching to electric guitar in the chorus. I love the note Anastacia sings as the middle eight ends and the last chorus ad libs are top notch. The lyrics about holding on to someone, wishing they would just appear one day, even though it's against your better judgement, are extremely relatable. I've known a few cowboys in my time!

Army of Me | 7.5 | Not terribly bothered by this elimination, it sits at about the same score I'd give the Christina song. It's a memorable song for sure but never was near the top of my Lotus charts

Cowboys & Kisses | 8.5 | Don't know why this bops catches so much ire from the peanut gallery. It's clearly one of the best songs from the album without doubt, light years better than the title track.
