Not That Kind of Rate: Anastacia | Finished

Time to start the day with losing one of the two remaining title tracks. We already lost Freak of Nature (47) and Resurrection (40). So which title track will win that mini-competition - Not That Kind or Heavy Rotation?

I told you all the route to top 20 was rough. Nobody called for this. But this feels very unexpected. Especially since it went top 10 last time. And even without the new singles/albumtracks this performed a whole lot worse. Not That Kind was the kickstart for her career as this track was the one she performed on talent show The Cut making sure both Elton John and Michael Jackson would get her a record deal behind the scenes. It was however the second single from the album of the same name. The song is in its message a clear reference of individuality and female empowerment. There is a sass and wit in her lyrics that makes this track standout in her discography to me. She will not be messed with and it also shows in her delivery. Not That Kind is definitely among the more soul-inspired sounding songs in her discography with clear elements of funk.

Ric Wake produced the track and his remix of this track also got some airplay. The same can be said about the Kerri Chandler Vocal mix of this track which I prefer of the remixes. Later in her career in the mid 10’s she would release a country version of this track as support of her clothing line endeavour with ALDI. Though none of them come close to the original track. Speaking of the original track. I kind of missed/ignored the entire release of this. It wasn’t until much further into her career I grew into appreciating this track. And now it has. I am not letting it go. This song is literally the fundament of her career. @livefrommelbs handed out a 7,5 and says "It feels weird to give this a relatively 'low' score, but it's never really connected with me. I don't doubt the gals will boost it up the countdown though!" @berserkboi starts about the vocals "Affectations galore, but a very good melody!" Yet it is the melody that is the issue for @Maki "I love the production - it just sounds so crisp. Her vocals are fantastic and so propulsive. The chorus is excellent, too. All that being said, the song has never been among my favourites from her. I guess the melody is what doesn't click with me completely. Still, a song that is definitely a mid-tempo bop." @londonrain gave a 9,5 so perhaps he wishes now he gave this a 10 instead "Anastacia puts more into the opening line than many artists put into an entire song. I love this so much." That intro is fantastic indeed!

A song that was mostly in the top 20 got pushed out right at the end. Ouch!

The one regret I have from not visiting the Heavy Rotation tour is that I now have never heard this track live. The woman is serving vocals, sex and choreo! Yeah mama! It was during a time of economic crisis so I wasn’t really able to financially. But damn this pops off so hard. It was the start of her encore pre-luding I’m Outta Love. Like I said before this is one of the few tracks post spamming this woman to friends and family that they still liked. The fact it is the highest placed song in this rate from this album really proves they fucked up with the release. Yeah. The dance train would be a commercial sell-out to the max, but when she literally owns this genre with ease. Rodney Jerkins produced this and damn! He did well.

Obviously the commentary went all out on this one. Starting with @Maki "The trashiest song in her entire discography, but it's one damned bop. In fact, the opening synths make me think of an unreleased Lady Gaga songs. I actually get goosebumps when it reached that immense chorus. The hyperactively fast beat pairing with the song title is so clever, too. The middle-8 still has to grow on me, as well as the messy vocals of the post-chorus. Anyways, a stone cold bop it remains." The word bop has been mentioned. And obviously it well mentioned again, cause tea. In this case by @londonrain "Weirdly faceless for Anastacia, but a bop is a bop." Faceless indeed, but damn, she pulls it off. How on brand though for a commercial sell-out project the most faceless track ends up being the highest rated here ddd @livefrommelbs is snatched "A banger! This was a great discovery, it has such a distinct late-00s dance-pop vibe and I am LIVING." Also @berserkboi is swept "Very strong! Full Dance Diva mode is a spin I’d endorse for Anastacia!"

We will lose two and we start a hattrick of three singles in a row.

Defeated really climbed her way from the bottom three to the top 2. We love to see it. Also there was barely any stopping Heavy Rotation from winning this for the album.

*The absolute domination of self-titled is real and not entirely unexpected. Though I feel sad for the debut being hanging by one. Surprised however Evolution made it's way into the top 20 twice. Deserved though!

Both Heavy Rotation and Cowboys & Kisses not making the top 20 is the most painful part of the rate for me. Especially cause I also feel like Caught In The Middle is a bit out of her depth. Definitely great, but not top 20 material.
