Not That Kind of Rate: Anastacia | Finished

#21 feels fair for Heavy Rotation overall, but we have ended up with some songs left I would have preferred to see go first.

Caught and Lifeline feel like the two that need to go next, but every elimination is gonna suck at this point.

11 @bonnieetclyde

Commentary from bonnieetclyde: Still my favourite Anastacia track. I just love the lyrics, her vocals, the whole country-influence. This song grabbed me the very first time I heard it and has never weakened it’s grip on my heart. Wish she’d perform this live more often.

Highest: 10 @Sprockrooster / @sprocky's boy / @robertoy / @RUNAWAY / @MilesAngel / @Remorque / @soratami
Lowest: 5 @londonrain
Sprocky's score: 10

When you have an 11 and two 10's among the first three voters you are bound to be number 1, though I deemed it unlikely for this track to maintain. However being pushed outside the top 20 is simply overly vicious and savage. A FUCK UP! The music video for this single had the honour being the first one for Anastacia being followed with a camera crew for a making it. Shot at an airport the director explained Anastacia was pretty adamant about it not taking the obvious route with a rodeo for a theme. She did wear a cowboy hat ddd, but it is mostly amazing scenery (standing on an airplane) with a thin storyline of her being a female version James Bond (Never Gonna Love Again and Oncoming Train are shook). I was however captivated by it instantly and loved it immensely on impact. And I still do. In fact this was a strong 11-contender for me, cause this single is where my fandom for this women has started.

The country vibe works very well with her voice though most critics disagree with me. And so are the charts. Aside from Belgium, where this managed top 5 this was a big flop. I have to talk about the double echo adlib in the music video (also the tin tin out radio mix). That is one of her most amazing adlibs. The production literally did that. Alongside the single release there was also the release of an unplugged version. Many live performance were a hybrid of the regular and unplugged version. Right before the big adlib in the middle-8 of the regular version they would switch to the unplugged which is a bit more nice for her strut. She does however still sell the song as she shows a more restraint part of her vocal ability. Well, @londonrain was calling for it "A bit of a damp squib after the quality of the preceding songs. It's cute next to gorgeous." You are wrong. No cowboy kisses for you. @Maki is wrong too "Sorry, Sprocky, but I don't like this song. It's okay, but drags way too much and even though she delivers this style effciently, this is too much incognito country for me. Cute lyrics, but the song is as bland as can be." THAT ADLIB IS EVERYTHING BUT BLAND. Check your ears. Thank God for @berserkboi saving this commentary section "Here’s a song that’s aged well for me!" Finally, tea!

Tomorrow we lose an albumtrack and single from two different era's.

FINALLY.

Yikes, "Not That Kind" leaving before top 20 is definitely a surprise. I'm not too mad about it, but it definitely should've been there instead a few other weaker links.

Army of Me - 7,5
~ This is good song and a great cover, but I never considered it among her best and it overstayed its welcom a bit. I like the instrumental here a lot. Probably the last song I don't have anything particular to say about.

Cowboys & Kisses - 5,25
~ About time. My lowest remaining score since "Same Old Song" left way back at #86 and my only remaining sub-6 score since "Stay" was eliminated at #78, so I was so relieved to see this one finally get eliminated.
There are a few songs by Anastacia that I'm not a fan of, but can understand why they are so loved. Not with this one, though. Hinestly, I'm baffled by how this one is among people's favourites. I just don't hear anything exceptional here by any means. Sure, she gives some great ad-libs, but we're very much used to that from her. The lyrics are charming, though the song is boring and the melody doesn't appeal to me. It's a rather forgettable song overall and has no Anastacia essence whatsoever. Pleasantly boring. Country isn't a genre I'm a big fan of, so maybe that's the part of the issue. Anyways, it's one of her weakest singles for sure, and among my least favourite songs from this album. At least @londonrain makes me feel less alone.

Not That Kind - 8,75
~ A surprise right here. I definitely thought this song would appear in the top 20. It's full of attitude and greatly represents her as an artist.
Despite not being among my Anastacia favourites, it's in my top 3 from this album and deserved to reach top 20 out of the remaining songs.

Also, my scores actually made "Not That Kind" leap over "Cowboys & Kisses" last-minute - it would've been a disgrace if that hadn't happened.

Not That Kind - 9.7. This is so funky it makes me want to tap my feet and nod my head. The bass is so good. The vocals are sultry but full of 'don't mess with me' attitude.

Heavy Rotation - 8.5. I wasn't sure about this at first, but after a few listens the addictive rhythm of the drums and dark rumbling synths won me over.

Heavy Rotation - 8,5
~ I was hoping it would survive the final hurdle before top 20, Overall, it did very well. Actually, I'm the fool, since the score I gave it is lower that its average score. Anyways, I'm glad this banger received praise, despite sounding dated. "Defeated" is the one that I envisioned as the winning track of this album, but the title track will do.

Also, the score difference between this and the song at #20 is 0.3, so if I gave "Heavy Rotation" a 9, it would've made it to top 20.

As for the album, I knew it was going to be the first (non-cover) one to lose all of its songs, but it's a pity that it didn't have any representation in the top 20.
And I was pretty sure I would appear among the top 5 scorers of this album, so colour me surprised that I'm not even in the top 10 highest scorers for it. I blame "Absolutely Positively".

A bit scared to reveal which was my second lowest remaining score ever since "Stalemate" was eliminated at #37, and is now my lowest remaining score (since "Cowboys & Kisses" is gone).

*The absolute domination of self-titled is real and not entirely unexpected. Though I feel sad for the debut being hanging by one. Surprised however Evolution made it's way into the top 20 twice. Deserved though!
This top 20 is mostly great.

The main exception is "Caught in the Middle" possibly benefiting from recency bias. Despite not being my lowest remaining score, in no way I thought it would end up in the top 20 Anastacia songs. It has to leave tomorrow.

My ideal top 10:
I'm Outta Love
Paid My Dues
One Day in Your Life
Why'd You Lie to Me
Left Outside Alone
Sick and Tired
Heavy on My Heart
Pieces of a Dream
Lifeline
Stupid Little Things

All of them received either a 10 or an 11 from me. And there's one more song that received a 10 from me. And about 5 more with 9+ scores. Whew, talent!

We start the day with our first song that was both in the singles rate hosted by @Lost Boy ánd the zeroes poprock rate hosted by me. And it also received an 11.

Compared to the other two rates this has performed so much better and suddenly I feel like I made the right choice making this track the bonustrack from Anastacia in the poprock rate. The only songs from the zeroes which are poprock being left now aside from self-titled which was fully there are Pieces of a Dream and a stretch You'll Never Be Alone. So clearly I made a less controversial choice than I thought. Everything Burns is such a gift. Clearly Ben Moody felt his wig snatched hearing Left Outside Alone and thinking this is gothpop done flawlessly and he needed to work with her. He initially recorded it with queen Avril Lavigne. They worked also on Nobody’s Home. This version should be lit too, cause Nobody’s Home is elite Avril. When you are a fan of adlibs the discography of Anastacia is serving. But this song is actually giving you two of her absolutel best. First up is the start of middle-8 where queen Anastacia calls that everybody's screams and you actually feel the destruction. A masterclass in building up to a climax. Her final adlib is probably her best ever for me. It is the doppler-effect (the effect that a sirene approaching you is higher pitched than when it has passed you) in musical form and perfect for such an ominous and apocalyptic track. After over 10 years this is still how I feel after listening this track:

FelineAgonizingCondor-size_restricted.gif

I am having a blessed life cause I actually was graced to hear those adlibs live multiple times and it literally propelled the song to my top 5 by her. I am front row at the concert but blown to the back. Imagine the hurt I had when it was kept from spotify for a while because Ben Moody was a petty asshole. He wanted to promote his soloversion. That one has (In Memoriam) behind it, which is very on brand for how I feel about that version. Poor Hana Pestle, cause Ben Moody also recorded a version with her for his EP preceding his debut album. That version sounds much more ominous and raw. A perfect fit for an Evanescence album. However nothing comes close to the Anastacia version. I love it has a more radio friendly sound to it, but also the cinematic approach in instrumentality is a great fit.

Also, can I just say Anastacia looks absolutely snatched in the music video. She really takes you along on her story. Ben Moody might be a petty asshole, but he is a great duetpartner for Anastacia as his raw sound works perfectly. Let alone the lyricism of this track is topnotch drama. @livefrommelbs is serving tea "I've always reeeeally loved this one. Ben Moody seems like a grumpy, bitter man but he and Anastacia sound so good on this." @berserkboi is no fan "Not really my kind of thing but it succeeds at what it does!". @Maki is probably referring my poprock rate "A great choice for Anastacia bonus. Great collaboration and their voices, although very different, go together very well. Has a classic vibe, why it wasn't a big hit? The guitars that come in at the last chorus are the only thing the song needed to be even better.". Finally @londonrain "This will probably get slated for Ben's vocals but to me this is Anastacia's moment of Evanescence-esque balladry and it never feels like it gets the credit it deserves. Bring Me To Life whomst?" I guess it making top 20 is really people saying they can tolerate Ben's vocals? Yes! We need the evanescence rate ASAP! Let's add selected solo-efforts from Amy and Ben while we are at it. Kidding! A bit..

Not That Kind | 4.75 | Heavy Rotation | 7.75 | Everything Burns | 5.5

Don't think I ever had that effective a trio of 'house cleaning' eliminations in a rate in quite some time. I am thrilled. Never been into funk as a genre at all. See Not That Kind and those Janelle songs I campaigned to be out in Quirky Girls I. Sorry to those who love it.

I am beginning to be nervous for Lifeline which is my second favorite song here I would say.

The single-effect seems real for Anastacia: Not That Kind, Freak of Nature and Resurrection are all left by their singles. Self-titled is keeping it balanced for now with both 4 singles (which is all) and 4 albumtracks. From the albums we already lost their winning song was an albumtrack: You Give Love A Bad Name and Heavy Rotation. Which leaves Evolution that has both it's only single Caught in the Middle here and albumtrack Boxer. Will the single effect be real for Evolution or does Boxer knock it out (pun intended)? Let's find out now:

Caught in the Middle kicked out Heavy Rotation and consequently that entire album out of the top 20 as out of the final 4 voters 3 gave it a 10. I kind of feel sad of that as I would have loved that there were 6 albums in the top 20. Though I can't be too mad cause in hindsight this might be an underscore from me. Should have been a 9 instead. Anastacia did an amazing incorporating rock and electro into a song. Also violins are always a win for me. This was the leadsingle and only single for her now last album Evolution. A Swedish production team is behind this album and this song and well it only charted in Croatia (at #73). But at this point the charts are a goner and her main income comes from touring so in that way the song served it’s purpose. Fans were glad, cause the song is holding up quite well. She looks absolutely amazing in the music video!

Though I would rank it among the weaker lead singles it is still miles above Best of You and I Can Feel You for me. Weaker leadsingle, because there was so much other great potential in my opinion. Especially Boxer as we see now. @Maki continues on this ""Evolution" is the first Anastacia era I followed in real time. This first single and it was a bit underwhelming, despite being a pretty good song. I must say that it's her weakest lead single overall - even "I Can Feel You" has that signature Anastacia vibe to it that majes it slightly better. This is just too Spotify-lite and could've been sung by anyone. Unfortunately this theme recurs on majority of the album." But it definitely has the Anastacia flavour with several tracks. But I see your point. Probably because @livefrommelbs echoes this sentiment in a different way though "This sounds like it could be a Eurovision song, and that's absolutely no shade." YAAAAAS! We stan this concept. It actually also fits timewize as it is under 3 minutes. @berserkboi is simply loving it "A big bop! I enjoy a lot!" @londonrain calls it "A classic. The pre-chorus is so good and the chorus is a moment." Absolutely!

We will continue and finish our hattrick of three singles. Meaning we close the day with an album track. Will it be self-titled albumtracks only or will be Boxer knock something more out?

Everything Burns - 8.5. Ben Moody's guitarwork is outstanding and I like his raspy voice. When Anastacia and him sing together they blend perfectly. There are no drums until two thirds through which works well to draw attention to the lyrics in the verses.

Caught In The Middle - 10. My only 10 on the album. Strings open the first verse and an instrument I can't quite place rises up, growing louder to then play an amazing motif over the pre-chorus. Then the chorus hits you.
The whole song is a masterwork of rising tension in the verses and middle eight, and glorious release in the chorus which has melodies I adore. I have one criticism. It's too short

Everything Burns - 9,25
~ Mess at me just doing copy-paste with my commentary from 'poprock ladies' rate without editing it. Anyways, I love this song and actually wish I scored it a tiny bit higher. The main thing which prevented it form being a 10 is that it sounds a bit too acoustic compared to the rockier sound I want from it. Still, it's a very well-creafted song and Anastacia provides a fantastic vocal delivery. Nice to see that misandry didn't hurt it much, too.
@DJHazey giving this a 5.5 is a betrayal. On the other hand, great 11 pick, @Hybridcookie!

Caught in the Middle - 7,5
~ Despite being very good, this just doesn't belong in her top 20 songs. Her weakest lead single in my opinion. I definitely agree with @livefrommelbs when saying this sounds a lot like an Eurovision entry. Actually, vast majority of the album sounds like an Eurovision winner's debut. It's not a bad thing per say, of course, but Anastacia doing it seems a bit off-putting. I like the verses and pre-chorus, and the chorus is pretty good, but the song as a whole hasn't really aged well and is quite generic. There's just nothing exceptional by any means.
Overstayed its welcome, I'm afraid. This would've been a much acceptable position for "Not That Kind", if we had to lose a single.

Let's find out where the 5th 11 went. It is a single.

Looking at the leaderboard trajectory this performed very consistently, where it always was in the top 20 but couldn't reach the top 10. Looking at the stats compared to the singles rate it performed much better. Probably aged like fine wine as it now overtook If I Was Your Boyfriend, What Can We Do, Cowyboys & Kisses and Not That Kind. In the singles rate it was put behind those four. Lifeline is one of her strongest and darkest songs. She feels like she is drowning in pain. Divorce and health issues at a time she is in her mid-lifecrisis: she asks if she wasted a lifetime. She never had a child, because she fought so hard to get a career and she did not wanted to risk it by having a child. Lifeline feels like the track where all this pain cumulates into one big opus. She sings about all these trials and tribulations in her verses and when she comes to the middle-8 there is one powerful adlib that feels like the closure to these pains. Honestly that adlib is one of her best and hearing it live has really blessed my life.

There is also an Italian version featuring Kekko called Luce Per Sempre. I consider it homophobic this once was on spotify but taken off. So that was intentional. But that duet is so gorgeous as Kekko goes all out vocally alongside her. She leads her adlib so greatly in. We need it back ASAP! @londonrain is plain wrong "The end of the chorus always feels like it's about to build to something epic... which never comes." Sis… do you deliberately skip the 2:44-3:06 part? Can you say EPIC? @berserkboi is right "Significant and powerful!" @Maki makes a great connection "The last masterpiece from Anastacia (so far). One of her darkest and saddest songs. A sister to the superior "Heavy on My Heart", it's one of the and it never fails to get me in my feels. So devastating... My initial favourite from "Resurrection", and now it's fighting a strong battle with "Stupid Little Things" for that title. Either way, this is one of her beat songs." I love how Heavy On My Heart is the benchmark in order to find out if a song is emotionally powerful as I did before with Stay and Broken Wings.

Wow, a bit surprised I was the high scorer for Heavy Rotation. Looking at my final average, it's a tad high...ddd! I'd grade the album about B to B+, which should put it closer to the 8.5 to 8.9 range of my scoring, so I was certainly generous with my scores.

Very disappointed to see 'Not That Kind' exit before the top 20. A funky, joyous, & fantastic statement song to have as a track one on a debut.

Looking at what's left 'Boxer' is one of lowest scores & can certainly leave asap.
