Older albums you're loving today.

I think this will always be my fave Brandy record. She and Timbaland were a great combination.

I still have no idea why Cyndi's full ''Shine'' album (plus ''Still With Me!) hasn't made it's way onto streaming?

Due to the new SWV and Xscape reality show I'm finally doing a discography deep dive on both.

I'm more familiar with SWV so it's been nice to revisit the singles from It's About Time (and to find out that as an album it's pretty much all killer, no filler!) - with Xscape I'm going in blind, and while the debut has its moments (Pumpin', Let Me Know, With You, and Love On My Mind are all great), it's definitely more patchy. Just Kickin' It in particular disappointed me; I'm not fond of the lyrics and overall I found it pretty meh, which is weird since it's one of their signature songs. Hopefully their other two albums are stronger!

The 3CD Deluxe Edition. Packaging is glossy and beautiful (and a damn sight better than the original CD artwork, for a change) but I know I'll be bugged by the errors on the bonus discs. Hence waiting for it to be 50% off at HMV. 8 quid is more than reasonable. The remaster is a bit loud but does sound pretty good.

A good album that didn't deserve to flop so badly (blame the great pop bloodletting of Q4 1986).

SWV vs. Xscape day 2. For me both groups' sophomore albums seem to be mirrors of each other, in that New Beginnings isn't as bulletproof as It's About Time, while so far Off The Hook has higher highs than Hummin'... did. I still largely prefer SWV in terms of vocals and overall production though - It's All About U is one of my favorite R&B songs of the 90s.

Both acts are on my list to explore, I always assumed I would prefer Xscape given how much I love Kandi's first solo album and the many bops she's penned. I only know 2-3 of SWV's singles, all of which I've enjoyed.

Kandi definitely has the best vocals for me out of everyone in Xscape. So far SWV's albums are a lot stronger on the whole though

This week’s selection of older albums I am loving this week comes in the form of five that I have been hammering on non-stop heavy rotation!

Ace of Base - The Golden Ratio

1679123044226.jpeg
Bardot - Play It Like That

Jessica Simpson -Irresistable

Brandy - Full Moon

Paula Abdul - Forever Your Girl

Some of these remain week from week while others I swap out for others, but yeah, this week it has been these five non stop!

I listened to this for the first time in ages today and it’s still brilliant. Such an underrated album by an underrated artist. She was so much more than her camp Disco Queen image implies
