Olly Alexander - Polari

I'm really enjoying this. I know Night Call was essentially a solo outing, but I keep needing to remind myself that this is actually Olly's debut. And for a debut it's a pretty good collection. I still think When We Kiss is still my favourite thing on here, but also really liking Whisper In The Waves, Heal You and Language (which is just beautiful).

I also agree with others that some of the things here feel like they need stronger choruses and for the production to be a little bit punchier. But on the whole I'll definitely be returning to this a lot.

Also, didn't realise we were also getting a music video. It's cute, even if it feels like more of the same.

I LOVED Night Call, so I was looking forward to this. I just did my first album play through, not really playing the single/s(?) before this. I like it so far, it’s more a grower and there’s some instant songs but less than Night Call. I know I’ll get hooked though!

Do we have any idea which other songs from the album were in contention for Eurovision with Dizzy? I remember he said there were a few. It's interesting that Dizzy is definitely on the weaker end of this album but it does make more sense in the context of the whole album.

Songs i'm offended by if they were in contention because they were far superior

Polari - slightly fleshed out
Cupid's Bow
I Know - the sax in the middle 8 alone would be amazing
Archangel
Miss You So Much
Whisper In The Waves - imagine some etheal sea staging

Things that probably would have performed similalarlly.

When We Kiss
Shadow Of Love
Make Me A Man
Beautiful
Heal You
Langage

Although honestly I would say everything with the exception of Heal You & Shadow (which sounds like it was written at the same time as Dizzy) is probably a better song for eurovision, but that's probably bias because of the overly produced staging, but Dizzy, lovely as it is, really goes nowhere.

A really enjoyable album but I have to echo the criticisms of weak choruses on most of the songs. The melodies and production during much of the choruses never really pop or hook into you.

This won’t be a problem with repeated listens but on first listen, it’s makes everything feel a little flat.

100% on board with this album. Heal You is fantastic, I love how it builds. A single remix with Kylie would do nicely.

It’s probably just my dodgy ears but the OH sound throughout I Know isn’t a sample from Boom Clap is it? It sounds so much like Charli.

Wait at this album actually being great! Olly and Danny L Harle really nailed the brief, a lot of these songs sound just like 80s Erasure tracks with added PWL vocal stuttering. Of course every song is better than Dizzy, with special mention to Make Me A Man, Archangel, Miss You So Much and When We Kiss which would have all worked so much better as Eurovision songs. I will get a lot of replay value out of this album, it's a triumph!
