Oscar Bait 2020 - 21

  1. Another Round is great. A really clever mix of comedy and tragedy (the two things that naturally result from getting drunk).

I'm glad it snuck into the Directing category.

  2. I skimmed through one of those "anonymous Oscar voter" articles (I know, I know) and the guy hadn't seen Hillbilly Elegy but was going to vote for Glenn anyway because she's overdue.

Considering she's up against three first-time nominees and a recent winner, if that mentality translates into any numbers at all...

  6. The shorts are just grim as usual. Only half way through but so far had police brutality, concentration camps, starving children, racist shootings, grieving parents and thwarted fights for democracy. All hugely depressing.

They need to do something about the misery porn that's always on offer. Death, war, illness, trauma, tragedy are not prerequisites for great film making but for some reason The Academy seem to think that is the case.

  7. This is apparently incredible. I hope it gets a release at some point rather than in "TBA" cinema limbo which it seems to be at the moment.

  8. I've seen it (Can't remember where).

At 30 mins it would be really powerful. At 90 mins it REALLY outstays it's welcome.

  10. I know that’s right !

  11. If anything, I think Disney would be concerned about an Eternals trailer negatively affecting Oscar votes - losing some of Chloe’s prestige appeal - and as the second tweet says, having the Oscar is the best potential promotional option.

  12. The 2021 Film Independent Spirit Awards were last night and of course, chose all the RIGHT winners:

I’d give the Oscar to Riz, but even with their diversifying voting body, I can’t see it happening.

Maybe Carey still stands a chance though.

  15. I finally got around to watching Sound of Metal this week and wow, I really did not expect it to stay with me the way it has. Such a quiet and real film. It has the narrative structure of your average, by-the-numbers Oscar contender but tonally it’s much more subtle. Paul Raci’s performance gives the whole thing the natural feel of a good documentary and Riz Ahmed is such a beautiful, compelling presence - the final scene is sad and delicate and nearly made me cry.

  16. I think Hopkins might take Best Actor

Yeah I saw this from Variety too the other day:

‘“I think Chadwick Boseman is going to win, but I voted for Anthony Hopkins,” says one voting member of the acting branch. But, I heard that phrase or some variation from multiple voters over the past few days. After winning BAFTA, many dismissed British-born Hopkins’ win as a “home-field advantage.”’

  18. For once, it's nice to be on the eve of the Oscars with some genuine uncertainty about the outcome of the acting categories (well, three of them - I think we can say Daniel Kaluuya has it in the bag).

Finally watched One Night In Miami and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm over the last couple of days. The former was excellent and deserved far more love than it got. The latter, a few standout moments aside, was a chore. Maria was very good but I'm not sure I understand why - considering how comedy performances barely get a look in at the Oscars - this was the one that got nominated.

A few gaps still to be filled, but I'm considering just waiting for cinemas to open for Nomadland, Judas and the Black Messiah and Minari all of which are confirmed to be getting theatrical releases (along with The Father and Another Round which are out in June). Someday I'll force myself to sit through Hillbilly Elegy...

  19. Devastated that we won’t have our first ever simultaneous Oscar and Razzie for the same performance!!

  20. Which would have been amazing on the 40th (??) anniversary of when Ms Faye Dunaway should have set that precedent originally. Damn Oscars.
