Oscar Bait 2022 - 2023

Kerry was probably the best. I couldn’t have argued against an Angela career win, especially considering the history of the Academy and the industry. But it’s not her best performance.
I'd probably say Kerry > Angela > Stephanie > Jamie > Hong. None of them is anywhere close to bad though, and in Hong's case my perception is probably coloured by the fact that I hated the film.

The 'Best Supporting Actress' nominees were all great and probably the most solid category. I would only have given the award to Kerry, Angela or Hong, because EEAAO already won so much in other categories.

I also would’ve liked to see Angela rewarded this year but it is a bit weird to see the online discourse beginning to rewrite history with her Tina Turner role. A stunning performance that easily would’ve been a deserving winner but she wasn’t ‘robbed’ that year. Holly Hunter’s performance was deserving also.

Doesn’t need to be her best performance though. I do think she was strongest in the category, followed by Stephanie, then Kerry.

JLC was, ironically, the least good.

(Haven’t seen The Whale.)

Absolutely. Holly was unstoppable that year. She pretty much won every lead-up award to the Oscars.

Her win was a foregone conclusion, which feels a bit of a shame because Angela, Emma Thompson and Debra Winger were all outstanding as well (I haven't seen Six Degrees of Separation). It's a shame they were all the same year, given that some of the lead actress categories in that decade were shockingly weak.

I think if What's Love Got to Do With It had come out in 1994, Angela would have won.

I finally saw Blue Sky and I have to say Jessica Lange was amazing. Had Blue Sky been released three years earlier in 1991, I wonder, though, if Lange would have even been nominated considering it was a stacked year with Jodie Foster from Silence of the Lambs, Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon from Thelma and Louise.

I suppose Lange might have replaced Bette Midler in For the Boys or Laura Dern in Rambling Rose.

Stockard Channing is win-worthy too… I highly recommend the film!
