I feel like some of this comes from him talking about his sexual assault at the hands of the former President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (which led to insider backlash on his career), his openness about his depression and just generally being a decent guy who has had it rough and being someone who people just like plays a part into him having so much love recently. He disappeared for a while and then when he came back, he was a different man and eventually we found out why. there is a legion of people who grew up with his movies and have so much love for him, people want to see him do well.
All of that is spot on.
I think also, when backlashes and negativity vortexes for multiple actors and musicians cycle through the news feed every day, it's just... nice to be swept up in seeing someone comeback from the wilderness and go on the upswing. The goodwill for someone who once upon a time made your favourite childhood films is rather infectious.
