Oscars Race 2024-25

Surprised that We Live In Time is not gaining more traction, incredibly strong film. Emilia Perez can't touch it for me, just doesn't hold itself together by comparison. Looking forward to seeing Juror #2, Conclave and Anora. Longer wait for Babygirl, but I have hope in Nicole as ever.

Saw Gladiator II and Wicked yesterday. I think Denzel and Ariana should easily pick up Supporting nominations (and possibly wins?) for their roles.

I wouldn’t at all be mad at both Paul and Cynthia also snagging nominations. I thought they each anchored their respective films really well.

As a total aside - Connie Nielsen was absolutely awful in Gladiator II. I’ve never seen the original, so perhaps she was a better actress 25 years ago, but she was giving full Lifetime Original the entire film.

I don’t know how competitive their categories are this year, but I really don’t see it for Denzel or Paul (I’m a fan of both so I wouldn’t be mad if they did snag nominations).

Denzel and (surprisingly) Joseph Quinn were by far the strongest performances in Gladiator 2 for me. Not that the film overall really felt like it came together at all

Love Paul, but I don’t think this was good casting for him. He felt quite flat in this.
Agreed. I thought the whole film really struggled to justify its existence, although Denzel was great.

Best Actor-wise, most predictions seem to have Adrien Brody, Timothee Chalamet, Colman Domingo and Ralph Fiennes locked in with a few others fighting for the last slot. I don't see it for Paul.

I saw Anora earlier this week. It runs about 20 too long and kind of wasn't what I expected, but Mikey was incredible, the end was highly emotional and I haven't seen a character as unlikable as Ivan in a movie in a long time.

I actually really, really enjoyed Emilia Perez…?! Also watched The Substance yesterday and thought it was incredible. The final part feel a bit apart for me and was edging on “too much”, but everything else, especially the performances from Demi and Margarete were top notch.

Attended a screening last week and it's a bad movie. Amy is great in it, and has a few fantastic scenes, but it's an absolute mess overall.

I'll probably see Nightbitch but it looks really, really bad. Marielle Heller seems to be following the Ben Affleck trajectory - starting her directorial career with three bangers in a row only for the fourth to crash and burn.

While waiting for more of this year's crop I've been filling some recent Oscar year gaps; To Leslie (fantastic), Causeway (very low key but brilliant performances) and Rustin (a bit of a trial, as I suspected).
