Oscars Race 2024-25

Can someone kindly give me a sort of brief overview of how Demi's viewed as an actress/in terms of her overall career? My only real connection with her is seeing GI Jane as a kid which I remember got critically panned, but I'm actually struggling to get some context around the Deminaissance because I'm not particularly familiar with any of her other work and she's a bit of a blind spot for me.

She does a great job explaining it herself but in summary it’s a mix of always being seen as a ‘commercial’ actor and ageism.

She had an amazing run in the late 80s and early 90s, starting with coming of age classic St. Elmo's Fire and then delivering banger after banger for years with Ghost, Indecent Proposal, A Few Good Men and others. I think she was was considered the most bankable actress in Hollywood for a while (especially as Julia was in a bit of a dry spell) and she was the highest paid actress when she did Striptease. But that flopped (fairly) and GI Jane flopped (unfairly, it's a banger) and then she just sort of went away? I remember her in Charlie's Angels but it was a glorified cameo really and at the time she was already considered a veteran I think.

That's the very broad strokes from what I remember. I am elated she's back, what a luminous movie star.

Fernanda's win certainly makes it interesting. In 82 years of the Globes, the only winner of that category to miss out on an Oscar nom was Shirley MacLaine for Madame Sousatzka - who of course won in a bizarre three-way tie.

So we can virtually assume Fernanda is in, which is probably bad news for the likes of Nicole and Marianne.

I think Fernanda isn’t guaranteed a slot just yet. She missed out on the BAFTA longlists and CCA. While this Globes win will definitely propel her up the list, I think she’s gonna be fighting for that fifth slot with Marianne. SAG nominations voting ended a week and a half ago before this win so we won’t know if she gets in there until the nominations are revealed on Wednesday.

I’d say the Actress Race looks like this now:

Guaranteed Nominees
1. Demi Moore
2. Mikey Madison
3. Karla Sofia Gascon

Runner Up Nominees
4. Angelina Jolie
5. Nicole Kidman
6. Cynthia Erivo

Potential Nominees
7. Marianne Jean Baptiste
8. Fernanda Torres
9. Pamela Anderson
10. Felicity Jones

know the industry has changed etc etc but there must have been a turning point, when someone primarily known for their work on the big screen “lowered themselves” to appear on the small screen, and lived to tell the tale. Anyone have any opinions as to who it might be?
I’m sure there were instances before but Dustin Hoffman in Luck (2011) made a stir as a lead, Academy Award-winning, actor making the leap into TV and really kicked off the industry norm we see today.

Angels in America was a big one. Pacino, Streep and Thompson all Oscar-winners appearing. Oscar-winning Mike Nichols directing. But it's a miniseries rather than a commitment to do full 22 episode runs. So could be seen as more of an event for a Tony-winning play adaptation that couldn't have fit in a 2 hour film.
