Oscars Race 2024-25

A Real Pain is great but Kieran's seemingly inevitable win (I think Guy Pearce missing SAG has put the seal on that) will be one of the biggest category frauds ever.
Especially since he's probably in Supporting so Jesse Eisenberg could go for lead, and yet Jesse's nowhere to be found in the conversation for Best Actor.

This is a slightly misleading stat. I guess it depends on what counts as a lead role, but she was one of three leads in BOMBSHELL (2019, 34 million domestic), female lead in THE NORTHMAN (2022, 34 million domestic), female lead in THE UPSIDE (2017, 108 million domestic), co-lead in SECRET IN THEIR EYES (2015, 20 million domestic). BABYGIRL hitting 20 million is really not that unusual for her.

“Female Lead” in The Northman is a reach - she was Supporting. I’m not speaking for any of the other movies (I class myself as a mild Kidman stan and have not a clue what the fuck a The Upside is…)

I really enjoyed The Last Showgirl. Beautiful meditation on aging and consequences of following your dream. Pamela blew her performance out of the water, there was so much nuance in her expressions. She was perfect for the role.

My only gripe is that the plot itself was a little thin, and I felt like Gia Coppola could’ve done more with Pamela’s talent and pushed the story a bit further by adding a little more drama. But its subtle tone also gave more space for self reflection from an audience perspective.

She has top billing on NORTHMAN after Skarsgard. My point is that she's played prominent roles in a number of movies that made over 20 million since AUSTRALIA and so that tweet confused me.

What’s even funnier is he’s only being campaigned in Best Actor, albeit minimally, because of Fox Searchlight. Jesse has spent the entire campaign downplaying his acting and focused solely on his writing and directing aspect of the film and called it Kieran’s movie.

Sadly didn’t think The Nickel Boys worked at all. The first person perspective is so distracting, so limiting, and ultimately a gimmick that I don’t think can sustain a feature-length movie. It’s pretty but ruins the narrative and makes it a total slog. I felt its entire runtime.

Hard Truths was a tough sit and my theater had people vocally pissed at the ending.

She's great, but I don't see Marianne Jean-Baptiste getting in - the movie doesn't seem to land outside critics and deeply plugged in cinephiles. I can see why she's been missing televised precursors that don't cross over as much with critics.

Good news - my showing was kinda full, but can't deny the ending really takes the wind out of her sails.

All We Imagine as Light was fine. Still on the hunt for something I truly love this year. Wicked is that only thing I consistently come back to in my head. Cynthia and Ari did that, and I think their performances aren't being taken as seriously as they should be because the movie/IP is too girly.
