Pet Shop Boys Rate. Part 1: 1985-1991. Winner.

This is my first disagreement with the overall scoring ... I gave this a 9 (only 13 other tracks got that score or higher from me) …

Don Juan has everything you need in a b-side (it’s quirky lyrical content means it should never have been considered for an album) … Some amazing couplet’s and references, that bassline (one of their very very best), the sweeping synth strings, pulsing synth hook, keyboard flourishes ... all of which build the sense of pathos in the track, it’s exciting but never joyous ... The extended mix draws it’s beauty out to even greater success ...

So far it's all very "PSB have the BEST b-sides. Let's kick them all out." Which single do you think will leave first?

Unfortunately, I think it will be Was It Worth It since myself and @idratherjack are the only ones with the good sense to stan for it!

My personal pick for the single out would be Jealousy. It’s a good album track, but a poor single. Sorry, @Ray.

What the fuck? Another one of my tens is out already after the honor of having been the lowest voter? This awful juxtaposition. "Don Juan" did not deserve this. Especially when "DJ Culture," "I Want a Dog," and "Paninaro" are still in. Can those go out next?

I was nodding along while reading your post and hit "like" and THEN I read your last sentence.
Don Juan is of course amazing and a quintessential PSB song. I will tell you why in a (hopefully) distant future during the reveals.

Fair enough, it's just that most of the music including the vocal melodies does nothing for me - except the part from It would be a disaster to We'll be sorry soon, but I'm afraid that wasn't enough to warrant more than 4 points from me. I'm interested to read your thoughts on the song, though. And I'm sorry that the reveal came so soon.

I expect DJ Culture to be the single to leave first as it generally seems to be their most underrated single from 1985 to 1991. Which would be a shame as I love everything about it (music, lyrics, video, artwork). Hopefully Was It Worth It? will be out first (I would have preferred it to be a b-side to Miserablism instead of the other way round).

The irony of our bickering just before the reveal.
I`m devastated! You´re all a DISASTA! etc.

I like it a lot too!

I just realised "Was It Worth It?" is awful and I'm kicking it out at #53. Not that I'm meddling with the scores or anything.

@Vive Indifference has said it all! Especially the 12" rolls along so nicely with it´s relentless housey vibes. It sounds rather cheap and easy, but it is anything but! The chord changes are DRAMATIC and those unexpected Latin Rascal-edits make me smile every time. ("de de dü dü, DEDEDEDE dü dü...you know what I mean!)
Why is Opportunities still here!

B-side to "What Have I Done To Deserve This?

Highest score: 10 (@Eric Generic, @Bleu Noir)
Lowest score: 3 (@funkyg, @JakeMagnus)

Neil: Helena had a recording contract with Arista, and she asked us to write a song with her, and we went over one afternoon to her flat and she had a little bit of a chord change we quite liked. She'd already written an idea, which became the bridge of this song, and we took that away and wrote the rest. She also already had that part of the lyric: "The night goes by..." I wrote the rest of the words, except she had a good line we wanted to keep in" "then rise the daylight sky".
Chris: She had some lyrics that were very positive, and when Neil had changed it around the song became more negative.
Neil: This version was made as a demo for her to sing. We sent it to her because she was touring with Elton John at the time, and we never heard anything back [...] finally we got a message saying she'd recorded it, but it wasn't our version so we couldn't have any money. [...] We were dead disappointed because we thought it was a really good song. Then we got David Jacob to mix it and put it on the b-side of "What Have I Done To Deserve This?" – we had been recording "King's Cross" with Stephen Hague and stayed one night to mix this.

Ray: You know where you went wrong? Here's where you went wrong, Neil.

Neil: (Alternative) In the end her version was never released because she was dropped from Arista.
Neil: (Actually – Further Listening) Helena Springs did her own version, for her solo album which was never released, which she called "A New Love". [I own this LP, and considered gifting it to Neil at one point – Ray] Hers was much more complicated. The words I wrote – which were for her to sing – are about a woman leaving her husband, going to get a new life.

Ray: I underscored this. I gave it 5 points. It's a 7-8 pointer. It wouldn't have made a massive difference, but still, this song is beautifully haunting. Perhaps it's my age that makes me appreciate the line "At night it hits me cold/there's so much more to life than I'll ever know". But it's also a lovely tune, and Neil's voice sounds gorgeous. I don't know why I gave it 5. Must have been in no-nonsense-get-things-done-stop-whining mood.

@Mikey1701: The perfect B-side to What Have I Done To Deserve This. It’s a remarkably strong track- although it’s not surprising, given the calibre of their bonus tracks- that could have replaced One More Chance on Actually. [Yes! Yes! Ye– er, no.]
@Farnaby: Beautiful "liquid" and rich sound, nice bridge, but weak verses and weak chorus.
@Jóga: Same as Jack the Lad. (For reference, that means "I don't get what's so good about it. I enjoy it, but it's far from anything amazing.")
@Sally_Harper: This is good but I feel like it’s lacking something. [More Helena Springs perhaps?]
@One Stop Candy Shop: Not bad, but also not very different than their other b-sides. [Practically the same as "Sound Of The Panties Splitting", "Paninaro" and "Music For Boys", I see what you mean.] [No, I actually don't...]
@DominoDancing: Okay, but a bit on the boring side.
@Future Lover: Not very memorable, is it.
@TrendyMüller: This is one of those „other artists would love to have this as an a-side“-songs. [Those artists are called Helena Springs]

It's so hard not to give you some hints as to what's leaving next, but you'd say the rate is being boring if I did that. In any case, one more is departing later tonight.

I only knew of A New Life because I was tempted by the cassingle of What Have I Done..? in HMV one August summer evening in 1987, when I'd actually gone in to purchase Never Let Me Down Again (which I also did). The cassingle had all tracks repeated on each side, so after the rather horrible extended mix of the A-side, on came this rather lovely track with a pretty tune, nice chords, and affecting vocals. It was everything perfect about PSB at that moment.

A New Life wasn’t an unexpected loss, it’s essentially Jack The Lad done properly ... The opening melody is everything ... My only crticism is that like It’s A Sin, the b-side treads too similar a path to it’s a-side ... Still a worthy 7 for me though ...
