Pet Shop Boys Rate. Part 1: 1985-1991. Winner.

I had "quite liked" A New Life until I heard that Helena Springs version. It's amazing! Very mid 80s flop Donna Summer single which is the highest praise I can give it. Is her whole album in that dance/pop vein?

Disasta struck quickly....

The night goes by
leaving you behind me as I fly
then rise the daylight sky
How do you get to heaven if you never try?

How could you score this gorgeous song so low, you shower of........

...mmm, did @TrendyMüller delete that post himself or was he persuaded to do so, I wonder...
No, I didn´t delete it myself. It was just gone. I made sure that the text was placed so that "nothing could be proved". Dont know why this could offend anyone, but we can only hope that we don´t have to rate a certain PSB 12" from the 90´s in the second part of the rate.

I’m noticing that a lot of songs that I thought were very loved and that I didn’t quite find to be as good are just... liked. Good.

Surely the Great B-Side Massacre is over now, right?

B-side to "Love Comes Quickly"

Highest score: 10 (@Mikey1701, @GhettoPrincess)
Lowest score: 2.5 (@Peer_Gynt10)

Neil: This song was written in the legendary basement in Camden Town where we used to write all our early songs. It was meant to be very, very Italian when we wrote it.
Chris: It's got one of the hardest junctions to drive through at the end of the road, at Agar Grove. It's almost impossible to get round that corner in a big car.
JS [Jon Savage]: Is that all you've got to say about it?
Chris: There must be more to say about it. I can't remember what mix is on there. [...]
Neil: Before I knew Chris I had written a song with a completely different tune on the guitar – it was supposed to sound like Blondie – and when we wrote the music I used those words for this. [...] The music for "That's My Impression" was written in our Italian disco phase. We were writing a song around an arpeggio. We first recorded it in Ray Roberts' studio, and then with Bobby 'O'. Bobby 'O' thought the words were very weird. We recorded this in a different studio, producing it ourselves while Stephen Hague was finishing Please. [...] It's a very Bobby 'O' theme again. It's about jealousy, a corny pop lyric about how your lover is out there somewhere, trying to pick someone else up.
Chris: More sex.
Neil: I used to live in Knightsbridge in this little flat and I often used to walk by the Serpentine, which is why that is mentioned. In the last verse I'm trying to be a rock 'n' roll singer.
Chris: I like you singing like this. I don't like deadpan vocals. I've never liked deadpan vocals.
Neil: Now you tell me.

Ray: I used to love this. It wasn't until the rate that it dawned on me the ending really is rather shouty. And that I don't like it so much. I suppose I'm glad Neil didn't become a rock singer, unlike Chris. Maybe those two shouldn't be allowed to spend time together, because they get ideas. Hmm. I'll get back to you on this.

@Farnaby: The end of the song is one of the worst Pet Shop Boys 30 seconds ever. Sloppy, ugly... ugh. [Let me introduce you to "Twenty-Something"...]
@GhettoPrincess: Love the dark vibe of this and the way Neil sings it.
@One Stop Candy Shop: Typical Please b-side. You can easily sing A Man Could Get Arrested over it. It's that samey. [I tried and failed. Record yourself and send YouTube link.]
@DominoDancing: I love the moodiness, and this definitely get's a point bump for the last verse where Neil lets it rip! [But enough about "The Sound Of The Panties Splitting", Domino.]
@Future Lover: Clear B-side material.
@Mikey1701: One of my favourite B-sides and I am especially happy that they saw fit to give it an Extended ‘Disco Mix’ complete with added cowbells! It’s a pretty straightforward and simple track- it’s not going to win awards for its lyrics- but that doesn’t detract from the fact that this is a bop. I just pray that people give it the time of day and not discard it as just another B-side.
@Sally_Harper: I loved everything about this until the yelling at the end.
@TrendyMüller: It's my impression that the early Bobby O. inspired songs sound like they should have been released in 82/83. PSB were lucky that synth-pop was practically dead in 1986, so they could get away with it. [That's cryptic.]

But the shouty vocals towards the end of the song are the thing that makes That's My Impression stand out! I love the few times (mainly for Please b-sides) that Neil uses that vocal style.
