Pet Shop Boys Rate. Part 1: 1985-1991. Winner.

They/them, he/him
One More Chance leaving is terrible news.

The U2 cover leaving would have been excellent news one or two weeks ago.

But to think people prefer it to My October Symphony or A Man Could Get Arrested...

Anyway : top covers by Pet Shop Boys :

1 Go West
2 It’s Alright
3 We’re The Pet Shop Boys
4 Always On My Mind / In My House

10 The Bee Gees one
11 Some Elvis Cover

20 The Last To Die

10000 The rest, including Somewhere, the U2 one, Je T’Aime, What Keeps Mankind Alive, Losing My Mind (their version)...

Do you actively try to make people hate you?

They/them, he/him
Until @Ray says otherwise- and I doubt he will- we should be able to talk about our favourite band, regardless of the era.

Anyway, moving on...

Did You See Me Coming? Is Was It Worth It? for the 21st century- of course I’m going to stan for it! And of course everyone else will hate it ha ha.

Every elimination from here on out is going to hurt, unless it’s Left To My Own Devices and Being Boring, that is.

Can we all at least agree that The Way It Used To Be is incredible?
No. I never understood why people like a song that's literally 15 seconds looped for 20 minutes or however long it is.

Has there ever been a longer title for a single than:

How can you expect to be taken seriously? / Where the streets have no name (I can’t take my eyes off you)
I am ALMOST sure they did this deliberately. Nah, scratch that. They totally did it deliberately.

Fair enough ... feel free to run all over other folks (Ray’s) effort ...
Can we agree that I will decide whether this upsets me? (For the record, it doesn't, as long as it's about music, which cheesecake questions aren't.)

Did You See Me Coming? Is Was It Worth It? for the 21st century
But "Did You See Me Coming?" is so damn flat, and "Was It Worth It?" is explosion of glitter. I fail to see what they have in common.

Oh, I generally don't give a fuck about such trivial things like that, but Yes was apparently so important to someone that it was included to be amongst what someone considers their 1001 most important albums.
This would be important if top 10 did not consist of eight rock bands, Kate Bush and Björk (and that's me being generous and assuming there's more than one woman). But yeah, were I to pick PSB's most important albums Yes wouldn't make the list. "Important" is a wrong word here. It's slick, it's got some nice tunes, it's got some songs that really don't need to exist ("Coming?" and "Beautiful People", for instance, not to mention "Building A Wall" which has a dubious honour of me not remembering it at all other than it's very skippable). It's also very, very unimportant. A Xenomania pop album done right: Words And Music By Saint Etienne.

Coming soon: #30, recap and #29 (and possibly more). It would have been rounder to just do #30 and recap, but I'm not going to be that lazy. (Although in real life I totally am that lazy.)

31. It Must Be Obvious
7.6833333333

B-side to "So Hard"

Highest score: 10 (@RaggedTiger, @Jóga, @Sweet Music, @Bleu Noir, @chris4862)
Lowest score: 2.5 (@Peer_Gynt10)

Neil: This is a hilarious song. It started off as a joke about whatever must be obvious and I came up with the couplet: "Everyone knows when they look at us/of course they do, it must be obvious". Which I thought was hilarious. Then, having written those lines, it turned into another unrequited love song, about being in love with someone and everyone knowing apart from the person you're in love with. I've always liked the lyrics because it mentions The Sound Of Music [...] there's also a Noel Coward reference.
Chris: It's quite interesting, the backing track.
Neil: It was written in Glasgow, hence the guitar. Great snare fills – that's what makes the track. It also rather horrifyingly features my first ever guitar solo.
Jon Savage: You're not allowed to rock, are you?
Neil: No, we're officially not allowed to rock.
Chris: It's very funny quantisation. Everything is quantised to triplets.
Neil: It was the b-side of "So Hard". Jill Carrington played it to someone from another record company, who said "You might get a lot of people saying that the b-side is better than the a-side". At the time, Chris wouldn't have it on the album.

Ray: It only occurred to me now that the b-sides of Behaviour singles are perhaps a tad gay.

Mud pit is ready, so is my camera:

@Jóga: Could be an album track and it wouldn't be out of place at all regarding quality.
@DominoDancing: While I like this song, it really sounds rough and unfinished, and surprisingly harsh considering it's from the Behaviour era.

Another good pairing:

@One Stop Candy Shop: Nothing to say besides that it's nice enough.
@Mikey1701: One of the best songs to come from the Behaviour era. I can think of half a dozen songs from that album that could have been replaced by this- even if it does sound sonically similar in places to So Hard (which is probably why it is its bonus track). Oh well, at least we have another track to file under “amazing PSB B-Side”

And the other comments:

@Bleu Noir: was almost my 11. More unrequited heartache from Neil.
@Sally_Harper: The lyrics are better than the music.
@TrendyMüller: I like this quite a lot. I would like it even more, if the drum fills wouldn´t sound like they were played by hand on the drum computer.

Interesting how 1) all three singles that left so far were non-album ones, and 2) how much you obviously despise Alternative. Oh, and look at my beloved Introspective. Maybe all of it is in top 10? MAYBE??????!!

As if Always On My Mind/In My House won't be gone within the next ten eliminations...

It must be obvious is a great song with an amazing backing track and even better lyrics ... I scored it a 7 because if it had been given a little extra care and attention it could have been epic ... That dark pulsating bassline is crying out to be used to greater effect ... An extended mix you could actually listen to would be a dream come true ... (The only good thing about the KLF remixes is the packaging) …

Were The KLF taking the piss out of The Orb with that mix? (I know they were basically the same members at one point), but this is just a big outstretched middle-finger. The So Hard mix is also a real cheap stinker.

This would be important if top 10 did not consist of eight rock bands, Kate Bush and Björk (and that's me being generous and assuming there's more than one woman).
It's done chronologically, and yes, while it's very male-dominated, there is way more female presence than Kate Bush and Björk. That's what I remember from seeing the list once. Anyway, I didn't realize my mention of a stupid list like this would make people pressed. I guess it's part of my nature for me to see something on a list and think that it must be worth something. Hence, I thought Very must be worth something. Sorry. And I'm moving on.
