PHONY: Real Housewives of New York Reboot

I’m already fantasising about S2 changes. In a perfect world, they drop one or two current ‘wives, put Lu back in with Sonja and Dorinda as Friends Of/guests.

So the first episode's main topic was cheese and the second was caviar + cheese and Provisions, what's next girlies?

A SALAD + erehwon

Finished the episode and Erin seems like the only one who actually seems to 'get it'? Jenna is great by virtue of being inherently interesting and Jessel actually unpacking her relationship a bit at dinner was a pleasant surprise so I'll stick around and see if Brynn can do the heavy lifting next week.

Sai absolutely needs to go.

The girls being mad at Jenna for going to sleep at her own Hamptons house instead of Erin’s, even though she had a 630am conference call, Erin’s furnace broke an hour after the girls got there meaning the house was freezing and the girls were up all night partying.

So it’s about time and freezing cold - GOT IT!

I haven’t dived into this season yet but purely based on the promo I’ve seen it looks like a bunch of social media stars looking to expand their reach into TV. I don’t see anyone with that spark in their eyes that indicates they are barely concealing their crazy like basically all of the prior wives. Basically, the vibe feels completely different and it’s not something I even feel compelled to dip into.

And that’s how you know these people don’t get their brand. The house should have been insulted for being a broke down dusty fixer upper, someone should have helicoptered in heating units for everyone except Erin, and Jenna should have read Erin for not understanding the life of a corporate girly because she’s never worked an executive position a day in her life and relies on exploiting gentrifying areas for her own personal gain and making poor investments in a home that could only be considered ‘the Hamptons’ by the most delusional of real estate agents, without a beach view and very far from North of the highway.

But of course, the girls gave nothing, because they don’t know how to make good TV and as much as they like to pretend they are, they’re not old New Yorkers, Erin is buying what she can afford, and it’s more than everyone other than Jenna.

It's episode 2 and you're already larping what the women should do and say and acting like you're on some Drag Race library is open challenge.

There's nothing wrong with criticism but seriously. It's episode 2. Either decide you won't give them a chance and stop watching or let them breathe a bit as they get into their roles.

I'm not saying "shut up and enjoy your slop" but sometimes it seems like a lot of you watch these shows with the purpose of getting upset rather than enjoying them? That doesn't mean you can't hold opinions on it but come on!

The only way they THINK it’s good TV is going to a shop that’s closed and also making sure caviar is served together with PRINGLES!

I mean, this is literally almost exactly what Ramona did in season 6 at Heather's house? She called it a garage, complained it had no air conditioning and ordered her own, complained about having to drag their canoes into the water and not having someone doing it themselves, and assaulted Kristen. In one episode. Never mind an entire storyline about Bethenny's house being north of the highway, having sex on a waterbed, posing topless, not having any money until she fucked...If they're going to carry the RHONY moniker, they need to give SOMETHING.

This was supposed to be ~episode 3 or 4 based on the timeline of how long they filmed with Lizzy before she got booted. The women have tried to get into their roles, but none of them are engaging in a meaningful way enough for me to actually enjoy them.

I'd love to be proven wrong and this to be something other than what it's shown to be so far, but as it is, I don't think the criticisms I've levied against both episodes 1 and 2 are wrong, at all.

How are you guys already calling for people to be fired on episode 2. Whatever happened to mildly disliking someone. It's episode 2 of a new series (other than name). People aren't going to be fighting about important things and people aren't going to be fully natural on camera yet.
Lily LuAnn Jenkins you've been around this group long enough to know we flip flop every damn week!!! It's apart of the fun!! We suck!!

I think it's fair to criticize the cast even only 2 episodes deep - I'm open to change my mind but right now it's a chore to try and find something nice to say about Sai. I am overly cautious with anyone that's an influencer as generally they try to self produce and it backfires on them.

I was discussing with my partner about Bravo generally kind of missing the pulse of the standom and he made a good point that they didn't even try to maintain the 'tone' of RHONY with the reboot. Each installment has its own USP (which I believe @teddienono has outlined quite beautifully in the past but I won't consult the archives) that exists outside of the physical location of each city, an essence that developed as the franchise grew with casts who could build on past seasons. Lifestyle porn was literally never the RHONY brand, so by pushing that more to the forefront and simultaneously not being able to do any references to past seasons they lost their USP and didn't think to create a new one (or we haven't seen it yet, to be fair!). Right now I have no idea why they didn't just do a DC/Potomac again and call it something else entirely.

I don't even fully hate this cast but it feels like the reality TV equivalent to the Gossip Girl reboot.

Yeah. The New York-ness is gone. Like, what's my personal New York word association? Anxious, neurotic, hustler, brash, old school, grit, gritty, delusional, fast, diverse, antsy, eccentric, aggressive, struggle, Jewish, funny, stuffy, working class.

I get maybe two of those here. That's why I said it felt so focus grouped, as if it caters to everyone and no one at the same time. It just feels very middle of the road and Instagram. I have my own thoughts about how the city itself has changed over the last two decades, but I think I agree this is in large part a branding failure.
