  1. Don't you wanna dance?

    Say you wanna dance

    Don't you wanna dance?

    DANCE!

Welcome to PJ Retro. This round you’ll be celebrating delicious dancefloor delights & discoveries at the launch of CLUB RETRO:55, the ultimate virtual NIGHTCLUB experience!

VIP priority tickets are available now from your masters of the wheels of steel - DJ @Doodvid & MC @WoW73 - but to guarantee entry, your chosen song must first fit one of the following four categories:

PRE DRINKS: Something spicy to get us in the mood as we check there’s no lipstick on our teeth before heading out to the club!

ON THE DANCEFLOOR: Total banger - sweat dripping from the ceiling - let’s make shapes around a handbag!

CHILL OUT AFTER-PARTY: Low-tempo mellow comedown as the sun rises at dawn. Namaste!

“I’VE GOT A HEADACHE, SORRY” / STAYING IN: Soundtrack to a night at home on the sofa in pyjamas with a massive takeout & the phone off the hook. The club can wait till next time!

When submitting, let us know which category your song fits. Also, you need to tell us what the name of your imaginary ultimate club-night would be. Be creative!

    How this all works

You submit a song, the veto panel reviews your submission, and you’ll hear back if you’ve successfully passed. Once the song list is revealed, you listen to all of the other entries and put together a Eurovision-style ballot ranking the 10 songs you think most deserve recognition with point values as follows:

12 points (your favorite song goes here)
    10 points
    8 points
    7 points
    6 points
    5 points
    4 points
    3 points
    2 points
1 point (your least favorite song of your top 10 goes here)

You cannot vote for your own entry, you don’t know who submitted the other songs, and only those who have entered a song may submit a ballot. Contestants who enter a song but don’t vote have their points total halved as a consequence.

Criteria that will absolutely result in a veto

    • Song was originally released after December 31, 1999
    • Song was already entered in a previous round of any of the PJ song contests
Click here for the list of previous PJOPS entries
Click here for the list of previous PJSC entries
    • Song peaked within the top 10 on the UK or US singles chart
    • Song is a cover of or contains a prominent sample of a UK or US top 10 hit OR was covered/prominently sampled in a song that was a UK or US top 10 hit
    • Act has over 30 pages of discussion on the forum
    • Act was entered in the previous round
    • This includes any related solo or group acts to an act that was entered in the previous round (ex. Gwen Stefani and No Doubt, in an alternate universe where either of them could actually pass the veto criteria)

Criteria that will also be taken in consideration for veto purposes

    • Song is from an album that peaked in the top 10 on the UK or US albums chart
    • Song is from a Platinum- or Gold-certified album in the UK or US
    • Song peaked between #11 and #20 on the UK or US singles chart
    • Song was a major hit in other big music markets (France, Germany, Japan, etc) and/or in multiple countries
    • Song is by an act who had major success in the UK or US

    • Your ultimate pre-2000 dance classics - the bangers that would never be eligible for the contest but you want to spotlight for us all to experience.
    • The best clubs or nights you’ve attended & the musical memories associated with them.
    • Favourite retro remixers & the songs they transformed for you. We’ll add these to an ongoing playlist for you to lose your wig to.
Basically we wanna bop ‘till we drop so bring us the best that you’ve got!

  3. Let's go girls

  4. Are my entry ideas a bit too mellow for this round concept? Perhaps... ;)

  5. We created the staying at home category especially for you, dear

  6. So the songs don't need to be dancey/uptempo as long as they're in the fourth section, am I understanding correctly?

  7. Absolutely.

Filippa, livefrommelbs, Maki and 2 others like this.
  8. The third section is also for slower songs right?

Filippa, livefrommelbs, Lila and 4 others like this.
  9. Yeah. The ‘After-Party’ section is for anything mellow/chilled. Imagine you’re sat at a beach bar at sunrise after a big night out.

The ‘staying in’ section is for stuff that fits none of the first 3 categories. Anti-club, if you will!

  10. I see the 4 categories like this:

    1.

    2.

    3.

    4.

    (Sorry, couldn’t help myself dddd)

pop3blow2, nnnumb, Filippa and 9 others like this.
  11. @berserkboi, I’m afraid her name’s not on the guest list and when she started wildly screeching “Don’t you know who I am?” (“Tu ne sais pas qui je suis?”)
security shoved her into the gutter, she broke a kitten heel, and got 3 day-old rainwater splashed up her now-torn nylons.

  12. As an introvert, my life evolves around the 'Stay Inside' section, but I think I'll choose a different category for my actual entry.

Basically, the theme is: everything goes, as long as you can match it with one of the four sections. I really like that approach.
Does that mean that we'll have four winners at the end? (but only one official winner, of course)

  13. You cracked the code! I’ll pop a free cloakroom ticket for the launch night in the post.

pop3blow2, Filippa, chanex and 6 others like this.
  14. IT’S FRIDAY NIGHT - LET’S GET THINGS PUMPIN’!

A UK Top 3 banger from 1999 that would never pass veto here, and an example of that strange phenomenon inflicting many dance acts, whereby they follow up their biggest hit with arguably (BUT HIGHLY LIKELY COS I SAY SO) a much better single!

  15. Yes, but NOT four co-hosts for round 56!

Filippa, livefrommelbs, Maki and 4 others like this.
  16. Who is this?

  17. Did you say Retro party night?

Filippa, livefrommelbs, Lila and 5 others like this.
  18. OH LOOOOOOOOORDT OH LOOOOOOORRRDT!

The very best retro dance song you’ll hear to feature lyrics about job-seeking, outside of Man 2 Man’s ‘Male Stripper’ probably (and another Anti-Veto Dance Classic for the list)

nnnumb, unnameable, Filippa and 4 others like this.
