Welcome to the new and improved

PJ MONTHLY CHARTS '25: JANUARY

So what's happening this year/month, you ask? Well, aside from, you know, the new releases, we have two things. Firstly, we're debuting a brand new, more streamlined and more fun watch2gether format, and secondly, throughout the month we'll also be sharing a variety of '24 stats. Because yes, we have been collecting your data all this time, sorry about it! Now in terms of releases, obviously the big one ROSE GRAY finally released her debut album, and the best part is it was totally worth the wait! We also have new albums/EPs from BAD BUNNY, ELA MINUS, ETHEL CAIN, FKA TWIGS, FRANZ FERDINAND, JOJO, SOFIA COLL and THE WEEKEND, among others, and in the singles department, ALY & AJ, BAD GYAL, BANKS, BELINDA, CHER LLOYD, ERIKA VIKMAN, GFRIEND, HEIDI MONTAG, IVE, JADE, JAPANESE BREAKFAST, LOLA INDIGO, OLLY ALEXANDER, PERFUME GENIUS and SHARON VON ETTEN. Maybe not the most bombastic of months, especially given the ongoing LA fires' impact on the music industry, but there's still a lot of very cool releases, and maybe the perfect time to make some new discoveries. And now it's time to, as always, get to listening, rating and ranking.

RULES
  • Send a ballot with your 10 favorite songs and 5 to 10 favorite albums (using the format below) in a PM to @soratami.
  • You can choose to send only songs or albums if you wish.
  • The songs can be singles, album tracks, demos, or anything you want.
  • The albums can be full length, EP, mixtapes or compilations.
  • You cannot submit a ballot entirely full of K-Pop, that's what the K-Pop sub-forum charts are for.
  • The songs and albums can be released whenever, but recent releases have the best chance to make the charts.
  • Your ballot should be what you've been listening to in the past month.
  • Your favorite song/album gets 10 points, scaling all the way down to 1 point.
  • An album or song must have a minimum of two voters to chart.
  • Ties are broken by number of voters, then by highest vote, by quality of vote, then lowest score. If we still can't break parity the entries remain tied.
  • The top five songs each month make the PJ Chart Rate, a modified Eurovision Style contest that runs once a year.
  • You must give Louder Now by Rose Gray at least 1 point.

BALLOT FORMAT

Introducing the...

POPJUSTICE MONTHLY CATCH-UP

What is it?
The new and improved watch2gether format! The idea is for it to be a lot more concise and streamlined than before, and hopefully for it not to be strictly a monthly charts-only thing, but rather a forum-wide activity!

What's the point?
As the title implies, it's a fun way to catch up on the month's releases and music videos with your fellow PJers, to introduce others to your faves and make a few discoveries of your own, and obviously a way to help sort your monthly charts ballots, though people who don't take part in these charts are also welcome to take part.

How does it work?
Everyone can submit up to five songs they want to be played in the session through a form, and then I'll compile a 60 song/~3 hour playlist based on people's submissions, this thread and the monthly Spotify playlist, and we'll watch it together at the assigned time.

What songs can be submitted?
Singles released on the month in question, preferably with music videos/visualisers. That last part isn't mandatory, but it does make for a more engaging session.

Will all my picks be played?
That depends on how many people submit songs, but at least some of them definitely will. And anything submitted by multiple people will definitely be played, as long as it meets the rules above.

When will it take place?
5PM GMT on the Saturday after the last (New Music) Friday of the month. In other words, the first session will be tomorrow.

How long will it be?
60 songs/~3 hours, but obviously people are free to join for as long as long as they want, whether it's the whole session or just a few minutes to see what it's like.

The first session will be tomorrow at 5PM here. You can submit your songs here.

If anything isn't clear or if anyone has any questions, please let me know!

'24 STATS #1: PARTICIPATION

Let's start the '24 stats with something that also serves as a way to tag everyone, how many time each voter has taken part in last year's charts:

Part One, The Fair-Weathered
You may have popped by just to support your faves or only on particularly busy months, or dabbled once or twice but never caught the charts bug, but either way it'd be great to see you more often in 2025!

Talented, beautiful, etc etc. Either you took part through the entire year or were very close to it. Either way, and not to say the people who take part less often aren't vital as well because they absolutely are, but you're basically the main reason why we can keep running these charts, so thank you, and here's to another year!
