✰✰✰ PJ MONTHLY CHARTS '25: JANUARY ✰✰✰ Reveals done!

He/Him
Confirm you have me on ignore in the thread recommendations without confirming you have me on ignore a bitsy! XD

Top cut is alma - I'd say!

@Trouble in Paradise @Oleander - probably up your street!

Just took a listen and it was nice. The song as a whole (to a degree), but the intro especially, reminded me of a handful of J-Pop ballads.

V.I.P. - VERY IMPORTANT PONY - HORSEGIIRL
@Cutlery 7 @Oleander 6 @4Roses 1

Up next, the most recent EP by German artist horsegiirL, of "My Barn My Rules" fame. Right.

When you quit this contest before the pandemic and voted once since (last September) and therefore voting now is not considered a comeback is making me howl. A scream.

I love how Franz Ferdinand en Doechii made the list! <3

Honestly, I only listed people who hadn't voted at all in 2024 but did this month as "comeback", if I'd looked into people's voting history in more detail I'm pretty sure a few more would have qualified.

THUNDER EVER - CIX
@Untouchable Ace 9 @Slice of Life 7 @boom bazooka joe 1 @soratami 1

We start the top 20 with the second K-Pop release in the charts so far, the seventh mini-album by boy group CIX (as you can read in the artwork dd). This was actually the last release I listened to before wrapping my ballot, and mainly because I needed three albums to vote for to be able to participate in the K-Pop album charts, and I really wanted to throw [TBA] my 10 there, so I just had to. It's a very solid EP, especially the single THUNDER, which is one of the best boy group songs I've heard in a while.

THE PENTHOUSE - MICHAEL MEDRANO
@Untouchable Ace 8 @Cutlery 6 @4Roses

More male vocals, this time with the sophomore album by Los Angeles artist Michael Medrano, who I'm not really familiar with and the artwork doesn't exactly make me want to correct that, sorry to this man. We actually had some of the voters list this as "The Penthouse" and others as "Penthouse", but thankfully I spotted that, or the votes might have ended up accidentally being split.

HIT ME HARD AND SOFT - BILLIE EILISH
@GimmeWork 9 @Music Is Life & Death 6 @unnameable 4 @savilizabeths 3

Another big pop girl album resurfaces, the sixth so far. Do you think all of them will chart this month? I honestly found this album quite underwhelming on release as I was expecting more of a departure/evolution from Billie based on the teases and snippets, only for it to feel like mostly more of what she'd already been doing, but I have to say the album has grown on me a lot thanks to revising it for the rate. It's still my least favourite of hers, but that's mainly because the first two are just that excellent and will be extremely hard to top for me.

QUEEN - FABIANA
@berserkboi 9 @Maki 7 @Million_Lights 5 @soratami 2

Time for a language we hadn't seen in the top 40 yet, thanks to Neapolitan chanteuse Fabiana. I didn't think this album was exactly super amazing, but it's a fun listen listen with some great bops, I especially like GATTA BLACK, which interpolates Las Divinas, one of the most famous songs from the iconic late 00s Argentine show Patito Feo (which my younger sister used to stan dd).

SOS DELUXE: LANA - SZA
@Sprockrooster 9 @melodrama 8 @Rogue 3 @Petty Mayonnaise 2 @Aester 1

The first album to have received votes from five different people is last month's #1, SZA's much delayed SOS DELUXE: LANA, which, as I mentioned earlier, is the second extremely long album titled SOS in the top 40, along with Nej's. I still have yet to listen to this because I was waiting for the promised updated mixes that were supposed to have dropped in early January. That's probably never going to happen at this point, is it? Oh well. SZA released a few extra songs from this project to coincide with her recent Superbowl appearance, so we'll probably see this in the top 40 again in the February charts.

THE CHILD - GEOWULF
@CorgiCorgiCorgi 9 @Trouble in Paradise 9 @Phonetics Girl 7 @pop3blow2 6

Look at that point jump. And we have multiple much larger ones ones coming up very soon. Anyway, The Child is the third album by Australian act Geowulf, formerly a duo but apparently now a solo artist as of this release. Dragonette teas.

This was a really good discovery. And Neapolitan is quite an interesting language because, to me, it sounds like a mix of 50% Italian, 30% Romanian and 20% Portuguese.

I think it did happen with the deluxe of the deluxe you mentioned. Maybe my hearing is not concise enough for these kinds of things, but I hammered Kitchen the last month and the Superbowl version feels much richer suddenly.

THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT: THE ANTHOLOGY - TAYLOR SWIFT
@Slice of Life 9 @Music Is Life & Death 7 @savilizabeths 7 @pop3blow2 5 @unnameable 5

Time for yet another big pop girl re-chart. The Tortured Poets Department might not exactly be faring very well in the rate, but at least it came out on top here! And yes, that means Radical Optimism is the only BPG album not to have made the monthly charts this month. Poor Dua.

HER - MINNIE
@savilizabeths 9 @Slice of Life 8 @Million_Lights 7 @CorgiCorgiCorgi 5 @soratami 5

And the top K-Pop release of the month is HER, the debut mini-album by (G)I-DLE's MINNIE. This is truly excellent and I suggest even people who don't usually check for K-Pop give it a listen. It might still be February, but it feels like a strong K-Pop AOTY contender already.

AURORABOREAL - SOFIA COLL
@Million_Lights 10 @soratami 8 @daninternational 7 @berserkboi 5 @Oleander 4 @Maki 3 @Trouble in Paradise 1

With the most voters so far, at #12 we have the excellent EP auroraboreal by Barcelona artist Sofia Coll, which mixes Spanish, Catalan and English in a collection of absolutely killer bangers. As I've mentioned before, this is very reminiscent of sub-forum darling Belén Aguilera, which as anyone who is familiar with her material can say, is huge praise.
