PJ Retro 109 (reveals complete)

Wait how do I er... am I supposed to have a spreadsheet? I think I'm supposed to have been putting the songs in a spreadsheet. Does anyone know where I get the spreadsheet that I'm supposed to have been putting the songs in so I can copy the songs back out of the spreadsheet that they're not currently in.

I don't know how to do anything I'm 5.

Just use the template spreadsheet you used when hosting PJ00s, sis. Should still be linked in the PJ00s Vault.

Okay, I'm ready! ...oh, but I haven't posted the vetoes yet, have I?

THE VETOES:

KMFDM - Juke-Joint Jezebel (Metropolis mix). Featured on the platinum-certified soundtracks for Mortal Kombat and Bad Boys.

R. Bais - Dial My Number. A cover of this by the Back Bag already competed in round 101.

Full Frontal - You Think You're a Man. Cover of the UK top 20 SAW-produced Divine hit. Appeared on UK #2 Queer as Folk soundtrack. Homosexual standard.

Thelma Houston - I've Got the Music in Me. Cover of a UK and US top 20 Kiki Dee hit that also has versions by the likes of Cher, Celine Dion, Tina Turner, and Jennifer Lopez. As one veto panelist noted, "Oh, it's THAT song?? Yeah, that is in danger, gurl".

Another submission was temporarily vetoed because the artist has been submitted too recently (literally last round) but I gather we're not supposed to post the temporary vetoes so I will not do that.

Okay, now for the songs that weren't vetoed...

THE SPOTIFY PLAYLIST:

The first 24 of the 29 entries on the songlist are on Spotify, and have been manually sequenced for optimal listening pleasure.

GREYED OUT ON SPOTIFY (AT LEAST HERE IN THE UK):

(These have been tagged on to the bottom of the Spotify playlist. Regional availability may vary, so as ever, make sure to have 'Hide unplayable songs' in your Spotify settings set to off.)

NOT ON SPOTIFY AT ALL:

*longer versions are available on Spotify, but not the radio edit specified by the submitter

The sequencing of some titles is interesting…

Bad Reputation followed by TOO ADULT and Kiss Me.
Jealousy followed by Black Wedding Ring.
Move Out followed by I Must Be Fee and Flying Away.
Strange Desire followed by Another Lover.

and artist names:

Splashdown followed by Freedy Johnston.
The Time Frequency followed by The Radios.

The thematic connections are intentional! Except the last pair as the not-on-Spotify tracks don't really get sequenced (except within each other).

TOO ADULT is in fact a very different vibe to the songs either side of it, but that's exactly why it's there (it was track 2 or 3 on my draft playlist for ages before I decided it would be useful as a tonal gearshift).

The connection here eludes me!

For those using my PM-friendly playlist, note that the Kym Sims track has moved position - I have updated the list in my post above.
I wasn't quite happy with my playlist order when I posted it but I was ready for bed so I decided to fuck-it-post rather than leave everyone hanging another night. Last change I'd made before posting was moving I Must Be Free from track 23 to track 9 to break up a low-energy run of tracks (Shadow of the Moon > Ironspy > Bad Reputation), but when I woke up I thought, "what am I thinking, I Must Be Free is an obvious track 23" and moved it back. (And PMed ohnoitisnathan rather than announce it in the thread so I could look like I had my shit together!)

And, er, pardon me but I've just made another change – Ironspy has moved down to just after What I Wanna Do. Odd little run of songs alternating between horny and desolate there, but then isn't that the story of our lives. I think I'm happy with the playlist now so I'll stop tinkering! I take playlist sequencing more seriously than any other aspect of hosting, genuinely the most gratifying part for me. Maybe I'll be a DJ when I grow up.
