@berserkboi & @WoW73 would like to welcome you to PJ Retro 64!

    The theme of this round...?
The best decade for pop music:

    the 80's!

All the general rules for PJ Retro apply, but all entries have to
be released between 1-1-1980 and 31-12-1989....

When submitting your entry, please send it to BOTH hosts
in a PM, with a YouTube link, and if available,
a Spotify link for your song, merci!

    PJ Retro Rules:
"You submit a song, the veto panel reviews your submission, and you’ll hear back if you’ve successfully passed. Once the song list is revealed, you listen to all of the other entries and put together a Eurovision-style ballot ranking the 10 songs you think most deserve recognition
You cannot vote for your own entry, you don’t know who submitted the other songs, and only those who have entered a song may submit a ballot. Contestants who enter a song but don’t vote will have their points total halved as a consequence. I’ll reveal the ballots one by one at the end, and whoever accrues the most points wins the round, the envy of their peers, and a promotional deal with Tesco. Simple as that.
Criteria that will absolutely result in a veto

    • Song was originally released between 1-1-1980 and 31-12-1989
    • Song was already entered in a previous round of any of the PJ song contests
Click here for the list of previous PJOPS/PJ Retro entries
Click here for the list of previous PJSC entries
    • Song peaked within the top 10 on the UK or US singles chart
    • Song is a cover of or contains a prominent sample of a UK or US top 10 hit OR was covered/prominently sampled in a song that was a UK or US top 10 hit
    • Act has 25 pages or more of discussion on the forum
    • Act was entered in the previous round
    • This includes any related solo or group acts to an act that was entered in the previous round (ex. Gwen Stefani and No Doubt, in an alternate universe where either of them could actually pass the veto criteria)
Criteria that will also be taken in consideration for veto purposes

    • Song is from an album that peaked in the top 10 on the UK or US albums chart
    • Song is from a Platinum- or Gold-certified album in the UK or US
    • Song peaked between #11 and #20 on the UK or US singles chart
    • Song was a major hit in other big music markets (France, Germany, Japan, etc) and/or in multiple countries
    • Act has 15-24 pages of discussion on the forum
    • Song is by an act who had major success in the UK or US
    • Act has been entered multiple times in this contest"

We will spotlight some of the best 80's PJ Retro entries from the past
during this round, as well as some ineligible forgotten classics.

Looking forward to it? We are!

    Spotlight: MADONNA (Part 1)

Yes, the first Spotlight is here, and it is, of course, on Madonna,
THE face of the 80's pop music scene!! And it comes in three parts, too!

Next year, it will be 40 YEARS since the release of her debut single,
"Everybody". Not her most iconic song in my opinion,
but it will be forever remembered as her debut single

It charted just outside the Billboard Hot 100, and was added
to her debut album, her remix album "You Can Dance" in 1987,
and finally found its place on her 2 disc greatest hits set,
"Celebration", in 2009. Not ALL her "forgotten" 80's singles
were that lucky. Who remembers these?

Gambler: Taken from the "Vision Quest" soundtrack,
    top ten in several countries

Angel: A huge hit, top ten in many countries, but suffered from 2 things:
    1. No video. 2. THAT b-side...

Causing A Commotion: Taken from the "Who's That Girl" soundtrack,
    top ten just about everywhere....

Spotlight (HA!): the only new song on her 1987 remix album,
released as a single in Japan, only.

  9. Can't say I'm too excited for this theme, given it's a decade that's the most repetitive in PJ Retro. Though this was pretty much inevitable not long after we had a pre-80's round.
I don't expect much variety, either, but I'm ready to be surprised.

Also, I had only three potential submissions that fit this theme, which is by far my least represented post-50's decade on the list.

    [IMG]Spotlight: MADONNA (Part 2)

Another 'forgotten" Madonna 80's song is her
collaboration (with uncredited guest guest vocals)
with ex-lover Jellybean (more about him later).

Sidewalk Talk: A (minor) hit in some markets,
like the USA and the Netherlands

In 1989, Madonna released one of her best albums, "Like A Prayer".
The title track, second single "Express Yourself", and third single "Cherish",
were all huge hits around the globe, and had iconic music video's.
Late 1989, a fourth single was released. In Europe, they opted for this

Dear Jessie: though it charted in the top ten in some countries,
I've always considered it an odd choice....

The USA were treated to a far superiour song instead:

Though it was her biggest 'flop' since 1983!
Early 1990, a final single from "Like A Prayer" was released
in some markets, "Keep It Together", in remixed form.
Another top ten hit in the USA.

Madonna will of course never be eligible
for PJ Retro, but if she were, I would enter
this, her second single, and a personal favourite,
but in its original European album version:

  11. "Gambler" is such a bop and was so underrated in her rate.
And "Spotlight", while a good song, is certainly among her most inessential ones, since it sounds like a Madonna song generator from that decade.

Though this is my favourite out of her forgotten 80's singles:
  12. The one great side of this theme is evening out the playing field! When everyone sends 80s music, will it be a Foreign Language Track at the top? A male vocal? An r&b jam? A diva ballad? A Pop girl still? Can’t wait to find out!

    Spotlight: MADONNA (Part 3)

Like I stated before, Madonna will forever be ineligible
for PJ Retro... However, there have been a few
entries in previous rounds with a Madonna connection.
    Let's explore!

John Benitez, a former lover of Madonna, produced some
of her early songs, like "Holiday", "Crazy for You", and "Gambler",
but under his moniker Jellybean, he also released his own
music, like "Sidewalk Talk" from the previous post.
In 1987, he released his second album, "Just Visiting This Planet",
and @Hudweiser entered one of the singles off that album
in round 16 - and won!!!

Jellybean produced and remixed music for other artists too,
like PJ Retro 63 bronze medalist, E.G. Daily. In round 43,
    @Jeffo entered her Jellybean-produced hit from 1985,
which was co-written by Stephen Bray, who co-wrote
and co-produced Madonna classics, like "Into The Groove",
"Papa Don't Preach", "True Blue" and "Express Yourself"

    Another Jellybean-production that was entered
in PJ Retro is by Stacy Lattisaw, reaching number 4
    for @livefrommelbs - such a bop!

One of the guest vocalists on Jellybean's 1987 album
was Elisa Fiorillo, and on her debut album, he
produced two of the tracks. But there are more
Madonna-connections on her debut: 3 tracks were
produced by Reggie Lucas, who produced most of
Madonna's debut album, and 2 tracks were
produced by Gardner Cole, who co-wrote
    Madonna's hit "Open Your Heart".
In round 54, @pop3blow2 entered one of
    the Gardner Cole-produced tracks:

But Madonna actually wrote a PJ Retro entry, too!
In round 49, @tylerc904 entered a song by
Marilyn Martin, which was co-produced by long-time
Madonna collaborator Patrick Leonard ("Like A Prayer",
"Live to Tell", "Who's That Girl", and many others)
    and co-written by Madonna!

  14. Doing the research for this Spotlight made me come across this old thread - great to read input by fellow 80's music lovers like @letuinmybackdoor @Eric Generic @Vasilios @phoenix123 & @P Grandson
And I had forgotten about that other recording of "Into The Groove"!
  15. Me winning with that literally feels like 30 years ago.
