PJ Retro 80: MASQUERADE! The ball is over, see you again soon!

He/Him
I’ll post proper thank yous with the correct people tagged later but Vanelle was definitely the entry I was most confident about doing well for me this month, and I am glad to see you all bopped as hard as I did when I first heard her!

7 minutes never felt so short or blissful to me <333

*deletes victory speech*

So, I sent Kim Clark and "Stay Awhile", a lost classic from 1979. More like "Slay Awhile", amirite?

It was a random discovery following another song and holy shit, I was astounded upon hearing it. Talk about sounding like a smash hit and a worldwide sensation. It's so instant. From the first 10 seconds, you can tell it just sounds massive and it gets more and more amazing as it goes on. The fantastic earworm hooks that are like continuous slaps in the face. Each section of the song being absolutely perfect. Kim's adorable vocals. The general ABBA mixed with British charm vibes but also Kylie if she debuted in the 70s. Those lovely backing vocals. The splendid production which can be heard even in a lower quality. And so on...
Imagine having such a banger which sounds like an instant classic and a global hit at the time, yet in reality it was a Japanese-only single release with zero success, now only available on YouTube in a low quality (240p) form with mere 2.5 thousand views (approximately 500 of these being mine... and I'm not exaggerating dd). Madness. But that's what this song contest is all about for me. "Stay Awhile" became one of my most played songs of the year already and I really hoped the rest of you would hear at least a glimpse of perfection it is.

And oh how much I wish I discovered it just a little bit earlier in order to send it to that 70s themed PJ Retro round, because I'm sure it would've smashed and became a runaway winner there (even though I nearly won in that round).

Also, I connected the song to "Angeleyes" and "I Was Made for Lovin' You" because those brilliant 'ah, ah, ah...' chants are quite similar melodically and the BPM rate is nearly the same. And it's cute how all three songs also happen to be released in 1979.

As for my masquerade participant, I was choosing between @WoW73 and @Doodvid, but settled on the latter because of the British artist connection. Thinking back, I should've probably went with a safer bet such as @Disco Blister because @Doodvid would've surely been a better fit for one of the (many) Eurodance entries here. Still, it looks like they gave me a few points if I clocked that right, so it's all good.

Anyway, my complete obsession with the song made me have extremely high expectations and I can't seem to help it... Not even top 10 fff I should stop being so delusional and overly enthusiastic.

Swimming with Sharks/Humpe und Humpe 'Careless Love' was another that has been on my list since... my list existed, but, for whatever reason, I had not submitted it before. See also: my other #2's and my sole #1 PJ Retro results ddd.

Check out this original German video for it, which is bizarre, kinky, and slightly disturbing.

Now wait a second... that thread title.

Hey I'm back in Retro too! I definitely did not expect to land my best result since round 4 (in 2013!) where I came second with Suzanne Vega's Blood Makes Noise.

I knew a bunch of Feldman's 80s/early 90s hits before, but I only heard his '96 flop (?) album À contre-jour recently and it's got some bangers. I was toying with submitting Exit de la nuit but settled on Destination as I thought it had a stronger hook.
I picked @ohnoitisnathan solely because I decided to upload the video to YouTube myself ddd (primarily to cut out the lengthy TV host intro from the other upload). Also I hadn't taken part in 8 years so I didn't really know what could feasibly pass for someone's entry.

@WoW73 must've missed the "sounds like" part for my entry (I guess there was so much bamboozlement going on at all times, that it got lost in the mix ups) but I guess the Push the Feeling On and Show Me Love inspiration is quite obvious.

Congrats to @berserkboi on the double win and @WoW73 on the fake win!

1 - Pidä Musta Kiinni (Meiju Suvas)

@Maki
Here are my votes for this round:

12 points - Meiju Suvas - Pida Musta Kiini
~ Congrats to the "stealer" who snatched this song literally weeks after I discovered it and added it among my PJ Retro potentials. Obviously I wasn't going to do a dick move and give it less points than I think it deserves in this round. The synth work is so good and the melodies are excellent throughout - everything just works (by the way, I do have more Finnish retro goodies in my back pocket, hehe...)

10 points - George Lamond - Look Into My Eyes
~ Freestyle is apparently becoming a staple in my PJ Retro top 10s. An amazing song and discovery.

8 points - Vanelle - Tell Me
~ Instantly catchy, cute and fun. A bit Madonna-esque, too. Some rebellious earworms here, I caught myself humming to the melody weeks after hearing the song. Also, the length doesn't really seem to be an issue here, these 7 minutes pass rather quickly, justifying the song's quality.

7 points - Astaire - The Power Of Love
~ The first song on the list that had me thinking "why am I even trying..." Definitely wouldn't be surprised to see this one win - really strong melodies, synths, everything. The only reason why it doesn't appear in my top 3 is that the chorus is a tiny bit weaker than the rest.

6 points - Miguel Caló - Que Falta Que Me Haces
~ Now this is a bit unexpected but very welcome. A lovely song that reminds of my late grandpa who was a big Latin American oldies enthusiast. I still have a bunch of vinyl records around, there must be something similar to this one there.

5 points - Corona - I Don't Wanna Be A Star
~ Ooh, the 70s meets the 90s is such a good mix! Never heard this one before but I'm very glad I did - everything is just so catchy.

4 points - Reset - Get Me
~ Definitely one of the best Eurodance tunes in this round, the beat and hook are very strong. And that double middle-8, wig! Had to bump it one place because of it.

3 points - Neoton Família - Monte Carlo
~ Wait, are we sure this isn't an ABBA cover? Obviously a great song but somehow the over-familiarity worked against its favour here. And I'm glad to hear some Hungarian in this contest, I don't think we ever had it before actually.

2 points - François Feldman - Destination
~ Can someone please tell me what the 'destination' line that's being shouted reminds me of. I really like how chilled out this one is, while still being a bop.

1 point - Sheila Stewart - It's You (Dance Version)
~ A sophisticated 80s Eurobeat tune that managed to snatch this final point thanks to the singer's really nice voice and the song generally being very pleasant. Extremely random, but something about this reminds me of a wedding.

Honourable mentions:

Swimming With Sharks - Careless Love
~ I don't know why but this one is giving me 'runaway winner' vibes. It just feels... professional? To be honest I don't find it close to the ultimate highlights of this round but it's still a very good song, of course.

Fern Kinney - Love Me Tonight (Love, Love, Love)
~ So cute! Loving the slick production and those sparkly synths. It would've probably gotten that final point if the chorus wasn't repeated so many times at the end, I was kinda starting to lose interest a bit.

Jam & Spoon feat. Plavka - Angel (Ladadi O-heyo)
~ This is the one where the singer reminded me of Madonna. I'm thinking of these early to mid-90s vocals of hers, the enunciation is similar too. Anyway, a bop that started to get a bit repetitive by the end, so I had to cut it from my top 10.

Candela - Viva! Fernando Garcia
~ Was this a national final Eurovision entry? Because it totally sounds like that. Really nice song and the singer has a lovely voice.

Linda Jo Rizzo - Heartflash (Tonight)
~ This one has glimpses of winner vibes, but somehow falls a bit in some places. Very 80s.

Dorothée - Allo Allo, Monsieur L'ordinateur
~ She's not a singer, she's a performer. Anyway, I can name at least two better songs by Dorothée but this one is very charming in a way.

Cree Summer - Revelation Sunshine
~ This sound reminds me of Kelli Ali's "Tigermouth" album a bit, a really neat tune. Shame that I wasn't too impressed by it. Interesting vocals too, cute to find out she's multitalented and did heaps of voiceover work.

Capital Sound - In The Night
~ Really liking the hook here, wish the rap was a bit shorter though.

John & Mary - Red Wooden Beads
~ A really nice indie folk song, the lyrics are very 90s in a good way.

Masterboy - Different Dreams
~ Similarly to the Capital sound song, that's a pretty good hook, but the rap is a bit overbearing.

Baccara - The Devil Sent You To Lorado
~ They are charming for sure, even though it's borderline gimmick. Unfortunately, this is the weakest out of their songs I know so far, but it's definitely likeable.

Candy Girls - Fee Fi Fo Fum
~ I didn't know Cupcakke had a career during the 90s! Jokes aside, the beat and synths are excellent but most of the time I was like 'girl, please stop talking over the song!' ddd

The rest (ranked):

Well, another song waiting on the shelf, a la Pink Lady, another bottom 5 flop. But because of the confusion these masks has given me, I actually am going to be kind and personally thank users for their votes this contest, to clear my head, which I need for Little Shop of Horrors rehearsals and shows all next week, Sunday to Saturday. Now, this was intended to be @berserkboi bait, even though I actually just found this song by chance, same time as her Ewoks song as I remember, and his and @Maki's names was swiped right too quickly. Goodness knows if @Derek would even like my song by Dorothee. But I got a 12 from @berserkboi, which doesn't surprise me at all. Congrats for the win btw. Thanks to everyone else for giving Dorothee back her heart.

@unnameable
12 Vanelle – Tell Me

10 Kakko

8 Miguel Calo – it has a better melody and rhythm than most of the songs this round. Team tango for the medals!

7 Masterboy

6 Sheila Stewart

5 Lambretta

4 Astaire

3 Neoton Familia

2 Capital Sound

1 Baccara – the gasp in the chorus is a nice touch

Oooh, a 7th for Cree Summer (with 77 points too!) Oddly, she was born on July, 7 too. Some crazy pop3 numerology for this round.

I love the movie Atlantis (like, a lot) & while watching it awhile back & reading some more about Cree, I saw she put out some music in the 90s. So, I looked into it & enjoyed it quite a bit. Princess Kida produced by Lenny Kravitz seemed perfect for the masquerade.

I've always loved her voiceover work, so Cree really was a great choice for this round. I am very pleased.

And finally:

@Attis
12 John & Mary
10 Cree Summer
8 Ephraim Lewis
7 Miguel Calo
6 Candela
5 Fern Kinney
4 Lambretta
3 Corona
2 Cherelle
1 Baccara

@A&E
12 points: Ephraim Lewis - It Can't Be Forever
Smooth, soothing and sensuous. This will definitely end up in my evening / night music rotation along with the album it's on. I love discoveries like this but it was devastating to learn why he only released one album.

10 points: Candy Girls - Fee Fi Fo Fum
A couple of years ago I checked out Candy Girls' Wham Bam and this one because of their single artworks and was fascinated. I read some articles about Sweet Pussy Pauline who's featured here and she's a legend – and this is an absolute banger.

8 points: Cause & Effect - It's Over Now
I particularly enjoy the electronic atmosphere in the verses here, right up my street.

7 points: Cree Summer - Revelation Sunshine
I've had this album on my mental "to check-out" list since previewing this song a few weeks ago, so this is a nice coincidence.

6 points: Masterboy - Different Dreams
They also remixed my entry!

5 points: Fern Kinney - Love Me Tonight (Love, Love, Love)
I needed to get used to the vocals at first but this is perfect for my walking-tempo disco playlist.

4 points: John & Mary - Red Wooden Beads
The vocals had me hooked right away.

3 points: Cherrelle - Artificial Heart

2 points: Meiju Suvas - Pidä musta kiinni

1 point: Violeta Parra - La jardinera

Homourable memtions: Linda Jo Rizzo, Capital Sound, Kim Clark, Sound of Music (maybe the Swedish version would've got a couple of points... but now we'll never know~).

Oh, and this comment on the Reset video which cracked me up:
