PJ Retro 88: Endless Retro Vacation (Winner revealed!)

he/him
I thought this would be an arm wrestle between Lutricia and JX.
Same! Thanks to @undisco_me, @Ezz and @ohnoitisnathan for saving this banger from complete obliteration. The rest of you? A weekend break in the dilapidated *1 accommodation from the JX video with complimentary electrodes as requested.

Thanks to the hosts, congrats to the winner, commiserations to my taste level I guess.

I thought this was an excellent round, as quite a few more than the ten songs I could give points to would have deserved them! So congratulations to @Jeffo for a well deserved win (and also to @Tiger Suit and @pop3blow2 for still getting a medal for some of my favourites this round). And of course for hosting, @Up N Down and @Maki - from my side of the screen it seemed much smoother than it might have been from what you posted!

A song like Squeeze's This Summer is just the kind of track that immediately comes to my mind when a theme like this is announced, so I stand by my submission. Even if it landed me reliably in the second half of the leaderboard. And actually, I don't think it fared that badly, considering it got points from quite a few of you, so thank you @Tiger Suit, @Phonetics Girl, @Up N Down, @pop3blow2, @Attis, @invertedbutterfly, @unnameable, @If You Go, @Untouchable Ace, @KamikazeHeart, @Filler and @Jeffo!

Glad to finally apologize for trying to enter Holiday by The Other Ones, when I think subconsciously I already knew had been previously entered…I originally suggested it as my side-theme and then I was like “oh well then why not try and enter it in the contest then!” But ironically I was on a holiday myself so I couldn’t look up the spreadsheet and perform my due diligence and see it had been entered already…

I am shocked that my backup, or original entry, which was written in my hometown Dallas and I heard on the dance floor before ever visiting NYC, finished 4th! It got like three or four 12s! I love it to death but I figured it was mostly nostalgia, and it had been on my list forever.

Congrats @Jeffo and thank you for your endless patience with my shenanigans and excellent hosting @Up N Down & @Maki xoxo

What a pleasant surprise! As timing works out, the results unfolded at the end of a long holiday weekend in the US so that was vaguely on theme. Thanks to everyone who included Berlin on their ballots. Shoutout to our hosts who persevered through spreadsheet issues (we've all been there, those linked formulas can be tricky) and special shoutout to @pop3blow2 -- I haven't heard much from Echo & the Bunnymen so your song was a great discovery and I'm pleased to see it have done as well as it did.

As for next round? I have a couple of ideas that I need to think through so watch this space. @berserkboi You better get your list of Caribbean women who released music in France ready!

And it happened because I decided to sloth it up a bit for obvious reasons

But yeah, it was both funny and very frustrating seeing the entries suddenly duplicating themselves and replacing other entries on the leaderboard, one of them just became a blank link so these had to be updated manually. Luckily, that started happening only during the final third of the reveals. The shuffling of the ballot order didn't entirely work out either but it's good to know that we concealed the spreadsheet mess well enough.

My tenuous (not really) connections to the theme were:

- Laura Non C'e has been localised and translated into multiple languages including Spanish, English and French, travelling into those charts
- I travelled from giving you the usual FL French to FL Italian
- The version I sent went on a journey from an original mix to a brand spanking new beat!
- Laura is not here because she took a holiday from her relationship with Nek
- The journey of her relationship with Nek was a break-up!
- Queen @Filippa ran the last Holiday Themed Retro, and this song was one of her picks for the Lost Classics Rate we ran together #NeverForgotten
I already said the same thing though:
Nek - Laura Non C'é (Dance Remix)
Entry theme connection: something but it was a reach

@Jeffo give us that 'random theme draw' round again, please!

The shoehorning that took place here when all you had to say was that Laura is a town approximately 200km north of Adelaide!

Scream.
Nek appears to be a village in India.

Which reminds me, I nearly went with this for Fiona (her last name is Flanagan) as some type of a more obvious connection, and she also has a bonus connection of appearing with a different song in the previous vacation-themed round.

And I listened to the side theme picks and my fave discoveries are songs by Halina Frąckowiak, Ace of Base and Akina Nakamori (two of these are eligible for this contest).

Laura non c'è's lyrics mention Laura not being here, having gone away, the singer wondering where she is etc and you could just connect that to the journey/travel theme.
That's what I mentioned among the PMs, it made the most sense. The "explanation" alongside the ballot reveal was obviously in a joking manner.

Spreadsheets are fun! (not!)
Maybe they get fun when you host every other round.

A very belated thank you to:

12: @WowWowWowWow (nice to exchange 12s!)
10: @Disco Blister
5: @WoW73
3: @Dynamo
1: @ohnoitisnathan

for their votes for Chattanooga, which is a track I had found while searching for songs for @WoW73's recent European-themed round...in the end I opted to send Sanne Salomonsen there instead of this song, and perhaps that was the right decision given that Chattanooga put in a much more underwhelming showing here!

Thanks to @Maki and @Up N Down for persevering with great hosting despite spreadsheet issues, and well done to @Jeffo and the other podium-placers for bagging those medals. See you all in the next round!
