PJ Retro 88: Endless Retro Vacation (Winner revealed!)

Quite fitting we're having a delay in this particular round

Maki.jpg

A little surprised JX was a go as it felt massive at the time (although wikipedia says only #18 UK and #9 in MichelleMaryMcManusKianiLand), but more so that Fly Away hasn't been entered before - it's one of the best songs about endless retro vacations that I can think of.

We received our first two ballots yesterday, neither of which are by the hosts.

I plan on voting soon and my top 10 is nicely coming together. Not a particularly strong round for PJ Retro standards but some undeniably great standouts - I'll share more thoughts after voting.

Where's your ballot dear?

Voted last night! Great discoveries as usual but not an overly strong round overall - I ended up having to choose two of the 'maybe points' entries to finalize my top 10. On the other hand, the songs in my top 4 in particular are excellent and it was a bit of a struggle to arrange these.

Another reminder to send us your side theme picks!

Making my way through this now and I have to say putting the songs not on Spotify at the bottom of the song list/Youtube playlist is a mind of a mastermind move. So much more convenient than them being scattered all over the list, since you can just follow along the song list/Spotify playlist with no missing songs and find the remaining songs all in one place and in order at the bottom of the Youtube playlist.

@Up N Down right now:

(can't believe my dumb-ass attempted to question his genius way of arranging the list)

So far only 7 people have returned from their Retro vacation and submitted their ballots but we can have some iced tea while the rest of you are still enjoying your vacation.

With our last received ballot all the songs are off from 0.

3 songs have received votes from 5 people including the song in the lead.

One song has received more than one 12 but it is not in the lead.

The leading song hasn't received any 12s or 10s but has a 6 point lead.

There are many ties including the two songs currently sharing the 2nd place.

There are 4 FL songs in the top10, 2 of them in the top5.

You have time until this Saturday May 27 in the last possible time zone on Earth to submit your votes.

My methodology has always been the opposite. I start by finding out what songs aren't on Spotify altogether or are greyed out and list those first, listen to them, then I start Spotify knowing I'll have everything complete at the end.

Similar to the food theme, will we get explanations as to how some of the entries fit the theme? Some of them feel like a trip in themselves so maybe it's that?

Edited to say: this is purely for curiosity, not to question any interpretations, host judgements etc!

I was having that in mind and was debating whether and/or how to include the theme connections. We might just go over what the submitter posted about the theme connections (for the entries where things aren't already obvious based on the artist and song title) during the reveals of each voter's ballot.
And I can say that none of the songs were described as a 'journey' or 'trip' here when it comes to theme matching, but the reaching was very much present in a few cases.

Do you know what, I actually listened to some Fiona before choosing my entry for this round, then realised I'd already entered "The best is yet to come", a song whose entire lyrics are labouring a life-as-a-journey metaphor. I thought "why would they choose that song?" then remembered the chorus of:
She's always on the run
She don't know what she's running from

and therefore it counts for a travel round.
