PJ Retro 88: Endless Retro Vacation (Winner revealed!)

He/Him
If voting is closed, are we going to get the Who Sent What list soon?
The what?

Entries I guessed correctly: wait I don't do that in rounds I host

Ah so everyone thought @Filler sent Nina Hagen but it's actually a 60s male vocal ballad. I had to keep reminding myself of that too.

Anyway, don't you love when you randomly discover a B-side from 1983 by a super obscure artist who only released a few singles in their career and end up loving it more than most songs by widely popular artists? Happens to me more often than expected. And it happened with Lisa too, when I stumbled upon "Trans Oural Express". Initially, I didn't put it among my potential submissions list but just kept coming back to it and here we are. The hook of the synth + backing vocals is so damn catchy, the production is delicious 80s synth galore goodness and also has lovely melodies. It's just a wonderfully quirky oddball that's really addictive and I thought would stand out.

Here's the A-side, also really good but I don't enjoy it as much:

Lisa appears to be a French singer who released two more singles but unfortunately, these can't be found anywhere online.

I did have a few more potential entries that would've fit the vacation theme perfectly, so it's not like I specifically created this theme just to send that song (thinking about it now, I should definitely do that in the future dd)
Maybe sending a French bop after another, more competitive, French bop might not be a good idea but I never expected a win with this one yet obviously hope the voters were here for it. And I already know how things went there...

I have a good faith question for the veto panel! In the Fruit round I hosted, @Filler tried sending Squeeze, but the panel rejected it because Squeeze were deemed too successful an act (too many top 40 singles I think was the reason given). Was there a reason behind the change of heart this time around, or did they simply...squeeze through unnoticed?

I had a look at both spreadsheets mon ami - and the track from Retro 79 was one of their 6 Top 20 UK Singles, whereas This Summer was not one of those, and came about 10 years after their (most commercially) successful period, so the two of us who were against them passing last time reconsidered with this situation in mind.

I had a look at our PM from Retro 79 and I even said the below among other things:
I'd have potentially been more lenient if the song sent wasn't actually one of their 6 Top 20 UK hits
So DominoDancing played it perfectly!

This is not something I thought I'd ever say about a PJRetro entry, but one of the songs here really reminds me of PinkPantheress ff
Was this referring to Cranes? That's the only entry I thought of when reading this. Interestingly, "Paris & Rome" unearthed a memory of mine with this video:

It was made around 2005 if not earlier, and I remember stumbling across it about 10 years ago and being oddly fascinated by it, there's something gorgeous about it. The video is basically unsearchable but every few years, it somehow pops up among my recommendations. The song is giving me very similar vibes the Cranes one.
