- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- This week is week ending 5 April 1980. Your deadline is MIDNIGHT Saturday 26 March.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts.

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date (within the prior 6 months) or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

At number 40 a new entry:
Prince - Sexy dancer.
Prince's new UK single is "Sexy dancer" - the follow up to "I wanna be your lover" - the USA got "Why you wanna treat me so bad" as the follow up. As usual Prince is up to no good getting funky on the dance floor this time.

At number 39 a new entry:
OMD - Electricity.
This is the third time the debut single by OMD has been released and it comes hot off the back of their recent minor hit "Red frame, white light"
"Electricity" was first released on the indie Factory label last May (1979) and then it was re-released in Sep (1979) after they had signed to Virgin records offshoot Dindisc and were busy supporting Gary Numan in concert.
This time it's certainly taken off in The Cubster region!

The big shock this week is The Jam falling to number two after two week at the summit. This week's champs are The Detroit Spinners and "Working my way back to you" - they took five weeks to get there:

Meanwhile, stuck at number 3 are Liquid Gold and "Dance yourself dizzy", but climbing up fast behind them are Genesis and The Clash who's "Train in vain" is climbing up the USA chart but they refused to release it as a single here in the UK, apparently! The Lambrettas climb two places to number 7 but the biggest climber of the week are UB40 who shoot up from 26 to number 9 with their double A side "Food for thought/King"
Elsewhere in the top ten The Vapors, Martha and the Muffins and Fern Kinney are all heading downwards.

The Pretenders have this week's highest new entry at number 21 with "Talk of the town" but the big controversy at the moment is at number 40 - Prince's "Sexy dancer" which is lyrically causing a stir in the Cubster region. "Bambi" is on the b-side and because we like to keep this thread clean, rest assured we will not be "uploading" that track on this thread

Ooh, busiest week of the year so far, with no less than six new entries. I even had to retire the Dead Kennedys single a couple of weeks earlier than planned - but then again, it was kind of on borrowed time to begin with, as I had used the late UK license as an 'excuse' to fit it in my six-month rule anyway...

Luckily both Madness and The Undertones only had to upstage their own singles from six months earlier, but Prince (thanks Hairycub for the reminder!), The Cure, and Francoise Hardy (thanks Phoenix for tirelessly linking to those foreign charts!) needed some heavy lifting. Blame the flu. Laying here with nothing to do does wonders for all those little online jobs that need taking care of.

I always find the jump between Graduate and Tears For Fears amazing considering they turn from a Mod revival group to full on Synthpop in a matter of months.

You can join in now! From what I gather we are roughly the same age and started our personal charts roughly the same time. Does the early 80s not interest you enough even for a top 10?

Not criticising, I just think the more I have explored music prior to "my era" the more I have appreciated it (and appreciated my own era in better context).

I think my next step will be to really get into the 70s, which I've always found more difficult even than the 60s.

Strangely, I have always had this same problem. I was around for most of the 70s too, but even now I just can't really get into any of it (beyond the West Coast FM Radio.genre). If an act has a huge back catalogue spanning th 60s through to the 90s or beyond, you can almost guarantee their 70s stuff will be my least favourite.
