We are taking a trip down memory lane

The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- This week is week ending 5 July 1980. Your deadline is MIDNIGHT Saturday 25 June.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts.

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date (within the prior 6 months) or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

gezza76 said:
Don McLean still rules the roost this week as "Crying" stays at the top for a third week and actually improves sales wise to 87,000 copies to take its total to 462,000 copies and should easily cross the half million next week, it can also claim a double celebration as the song simultaneously climbs into the top 10 for the year.

Also not far off that list is Lipps Inc (currently No 13 on the YTD list) but "Funky Town" fades badly with only 57,000 sales last week, that's the lowest tally for a No 2 track this year, and the track will be very lucky to hold the position next week. Especially given the track at no 3 looks set to be the biggest challenge to McLean's 4th week, that of course is "Xanadu" by Olivia Newton John & ELO which jumps 14-3 (54,000) and is a marked improvement on her last single "Deeper Than The Night" which fizzled out at No 64 last year. Much like Newton John's biggest hits it is supported by a film in which she stars, but unlike "Grease" the film "Xanadu" isn't meeting with critical approval time will tell if the audience when it opens next month.

It was only a few months ago that Narada Michael Walden was in the top 10 with "I Shoulda Loved Ya" and he's back there this week as the writer of "Jump To The Beat" for 13 year old Stacy Lattisaw which expands 11-6 (42,000). She becomes the youngest female solo act to have a top 10 hit since Lena Zavaroni back in 1974 at the young age of 10.

With a debut album out next month expectations are high for UB40 who score a second top 10 single with their second release "My Way Of Thinking/ I Think It's Going To Rain" the latter a cover of a Randy Newman track. It bolts 19-8 this week (40,000) but has a long way to go to beat their debut hit which sold 372,000 copies.

In an exact reverse of the Narada Michael Walden situation here's B A Robertson who was in the top 10 as a writer earlier as co-author of Cliff Richard's "Carrie" this week finds himself zooming up the charts 25-9 (38,000) with "To Be Or Not To Be" which becomes his fourth top 10 hit from 5 releases and rectifies the blip that was "Kool In The Kaftan" which could get no higher than No 17 in April.

The Korgis hold at No 5 this week a their sales increase by 5% to 44,000 and Splodgenessabounds also hold at No 7 with a 10% increase to 40,000.

Dropping this week are Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway slip one to No 4 (54,000) and Teena Marie who moves 6-10 (35,000) though her sales are down just 10%.

I know that in the USA Irene Cara's "Fame" was a big hit in 1980 (as was the original film) - but the song didn't become a hit in the UK until summer 1982 when the TV series hit BBC TV
Therefore for me it didn't exist until July 1982

The same applies in reverse for Gary Numan/Tubeway Army Cars/Are Friends Electric. Both were UK number one hits in 1979 (Sep/July respectively) and therefore they would have charted in my Retrochart of 1979 - by July 1980 the UK was onto "We are glass" and then his next single "I die: you die"

My Retrochart will be posted later this evening - but first some makers and shakers on my Retrochart for w/e 5th July 1980 (as usual some shameless plugging to encourage you to have a listen to these tunes!)

Number 40 - New entry for Van Halen and "Runnin' with the devil":

Congratulations to both Olivia Newton John and ELO as they are the brand new number one this week with “Xanadu”, let’s hope the new film lives up to the hype!
OMD fall to number two with “Messages” as do The Korgis who are at number three now with “Everybody’s got to learn sometime”
Meanwhile, Stacy Lattisaw takes a big “Jump to the beat” from 18 to number four this week. Also climbing in the top 10 are UB40, Odyssey and Bob Marley and the Wailers.
Going down are Queen, Don Mclean and “Funky Town” by Lipps Inc, which looks like it‘s finally heading south as it goes down three places to number six.

Next week could see new entries from Kate Bush, The Rolling Stones, Leo Sayor, The Undertones and Phil Lynott – stay tuned!
