THE RETROCHART
We are taking a trip down memory lane

The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- This week is week ending 7 March 1981 and can include songs released up to 28 February 1981 only.

- Your deadline is MIDNIGHT THURSDAY 2 March.

- You can now chart ANY SONG RELEASED IN 1980.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

Well it turned into another week of Joe Dolce Vs Ultravox, and another week where "Shaddap You Face" triumphs, sales of 138,000 are down 10% indicating that perhaps public appetite for the novelty hit is starting to wain, meanwhile "Vienna" loses sales faster dropping 14% to 89,000, both tracks are now over the half million mark with the Ultravox track ahead by just 53,000 copies now cumulatively.

In just 6 months Adam & The Ants have now scored four top 10 singles, the latest being the title track from their album "Kings Of The Wild Frontier" which is back up to No 2 on the album charts this week behind Phil Collins. It was originally released last year and peaked at No 48 but now spurts 17-6 (62,000) and should give them a third top 5 hit from the album next week.

Recording a 13th top 10 hit Status quo now have a chart career dating 13 years, latest release "Something Bout You Baby I Like" a cover of a song written by Richard Supa which has only previously been a hit in the UK for Tom Jones when it reached No 36 in 1974 making the Quo's version far and away the biggest version as it climbs 19-9 (51,000) this week. It's the first release from their 14th (!) studio album "Never Too Late" due in 3 weeks time.

Ultravox should have competition next week from Roxy Music whose cover of "Jealous Guy" rises 6-3 (86,000) and is only their third single to climb as high, "Love Is The Drug" and "Dance Away" both peaking at No 2. Also climbing are Coast to Coast 8-7 (58,000), Freeez (9-8 (55,000) whilst Motorhead and Girlschool hold at No 5 despite a 17% increase, dropping this week are Rainbow 3-4 (73,000) and Madness 7-10 (43,000)

Sheena Easton has her first top 40 hits on the City of Doomsday chart with Morning Train up 17 to #35, Sheena for some reason looks older in 1981 than in 1991 when she was strutting around singing What Comes Naturally.

Slow week for new entries this week (and a new number 1!) as the early-year splurge cools off, but there's a few potential challengers for the top 10 lurking in the bottom 20... leather and safety pins out, frilly shirts and eyeliner in, it seems.
