The highest new entry at number five:

This week's number one:

OMD make it a second week at number one with “Enola Gay” – alongside The Police, Gary Numan and Blondie, they are the acts that have had two number ones so far this year! But watch out – Blondie have the highest new entry this week with “The tide is high” crashing in at number five – can they make it three number ones this year?

There are a lot of singles climbing inside the top ten:
Bad Manners, Adam and the Ants, Japan and Ultravox all go up as The Police, Simple Minds and Ottawan go down.

Poor Air Supply are stuck at number two for the second week in a row with “All out of love” – they recently spent four weeks stuck behind Diana Ross’ “Upside down”/Queen’s “Another one bites the dust” at number two in the US Hot 100

With ten new entries in this week's chart, there was a clearout of a number of songs that had been in the HMV chart for over 10 weeks – the longest of which was 18 weeks for Joy Division’s “Love will tear us apart”

Next week could see new entries from:
Abba, Diana Ross, Spandau Ballet, Gladys Knight and the Pips and Hall and Oates – stay tuned!

As expected OMD go the final step to grab their first ever chart topper but Kool & The Gang are hot on their heels hoping to match the feat next week, that is unless one of this week's trio of new top ten hits continue their current momentum. Both Diana Ross and Nolans have been top ten hit makers before but this is new territory for Teardrop Explodes and with their debut single!

Barbra Streisand and Madness continue to benefit from UK/US mainstream success but have they run out of steam yet?

Harry Thumann's brilliant "Underwater" will enter my Retrochart in early 1981, as that's when it charted on the UK chart peaking at number 41 (I really must do that thread of all the singles that peaked at number 41 in the UK chart during the 1980's!)

1981 will be the year of Patrick Cowley for me!

Ha! I actually had time yesterday to take a look at the Billboard magazine this week and realise a load of songs I liked were getting played already and discovered a few more I'd never heard. I already had a top 200 for the last couple of weeks so they've crept into the chart already. We'll see who makes the "official" top 100 in the coming weeks.

It's interesting how release schedules differed across the atlantic. I always wondered how much this had to do with differing musical taste (different tracks chosen as singles or differing order of release), the desire to promote in both areas at separate times or season a song was released in.

Yeah, this fascinated me at the time. But then I thought the whole notion of the Billboard Hot 100 was very exotic and full of mystique!
