Bad news in the charts this week as sales fall thanks in part to the usual summer slump, and as "Xanadu" rises to overtake Don McLean it only sold 74,000 copies last week- that's a new low for the year and far less than Olivia Newton John is used to with her previous chart toppers.

"Xanadu" continues the trend for high turnover at the top of the charts, it's 1980's 13th No 1 single, there were a total of 18 in the whole of 1979 so this year is set to be something of a record breaker, and given that Odyssey rocket 12-2 (59,000) this week it looks far from certain that ONJ/ELO will hold down the top spot next week. The group are known here for their 1977 hit "Native New Yorker" which made No 5 and remained their sole UK hit until "Use It Up, Wear It Out" which creates a disco influenced top 2 at a time when the US market has turned decidedly against the genre.

For most of the week Don Mclean's "Crying" was running at No 2 but faded at the final hurdle to dive to No 4 by Saturday (55,000) and was overtaken not only by Odyssey but also Stacy Lattislaw who climbs 6-3 (57,000).

Completing the top 5 are the Detroit Spinners who followed up the No 1 single "Working My Way Back To You- Forgive Me Girl" with "Body Language" which burned out at No 40, they return to the winning formula however with another medley "Cupid- I've Loved You A Long Time" a combination of covers of songs recorded by Sam Cooke and the Michael Zager Band respectively. It jumps 16-5 (42,000) and isn't without its own threat to top our charts next week.

Taken from their new album "Uprising" Bob Marley & The Wailers score a No 9 hit with "Could You Be Loved" which now equals his peak position which he reached with both "Jamming" and "Is This Love", it climbs 21-9 (33,000)

There's only one other climber within the top 10 and that's UB40 who rise 8-7 (41,000) with a minimal increase and look to be struggling, whilst Lipps Inc dive 2-6 (41,000), The Korgis drop 5-8 (33,000) and Splodgenessabouts just cling onto their place in the top 10 but can only sell 31,000 copies.

“Xanadu” gets a second week at number one for Olivia Newton John and ELO. My Retrochart top three lines up with the Mainstream UK chart as Oddssey climb to number two and Stacy Lattisaw climbs to number three. In fact the entire top five are on the way up this week. UB40 go up one place to four and Joy Division go shooting up from 22 to number five this week – a potential number one maybe?
OMD and The Korgies head down along with “Funky Town” at number ten this week.
Meanwhile Bob Marley and the Wailers climb one place to number eight with “Could you be loved”
There are a number of records rebounding back up the chart this week. Thin Lizzy’s China Town” is up two places to number nine. The Police climb back to number 11 and BA Robertson is back up to number 12.
The highest climber this week are Change “A lover’s holiday”, which goes up from 30 to 13
