Sadly… a horrible tragedy has just struck the music world. That makes this week's #1 a particularly bittersweet one, as sales of the long-running hit "(Just Like) Starting Over" spike in tribute to the murder of John Lennon, cutting off Spandau Ballet from getting a chart-topper with their debut single. Madness and Diana Ross swap places, Queen climb up in the top 10, while four songs fall out of the top 10, their place taken by the ever-climbing Jona Lewie, proven hitmakers Siouxsie and the Banshees and a #6 debut from the Police (who hope to follow up their biggest hit yet). The rest is quite slow, but Adam and the Ants continue their ascendancy and The Beat notch a top 20 debut, while Kate Bush will likely take second place in this year's seasonal rankings.

@Ironheade I do appreciate you posting last week's position it does make compiling easier thanks!

Also should John Lennon be worried about all these rumours? He is still alive and kicking currently (chart date is 7 December for week ending 13 December 1980). Maybe he should take a day off and stay in tomorrow…..

I have made... a terrible mistake.

Whatever, it stays at #1 this week. (Which means it gets two weeks at the top as a tribute! I didn't originally plan that, but hey.)

Leonard Cohen's apparently in town. They should maybe hang out together, and stay indoors.

Spoilers for 1981: My charts become like quicksand in early 1981, as very few songs rise up the chart and songs end up with extended and insane chart runs. After coming off the golden years of 1978-1980,it was one of only times during the 80's that it was difficult to enjoy the U.S. charts.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's a SIXTH week at the top for OMD, who continue to hold off Madness and Kool & The Gang. The knock-on effects of last week's huge intake sees massive falls for UB40, Blondie, Bowie and Roxy Music as Hall & Oates, Eddy Grant, Rod Stewart and Adam & The Ants replace them in the Top 10.

The Police, who were the last act to be at #1 before Enola Gay took up residency, could be the biggest challenger again thanks to their brand new single De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da. And that's all I want to say to you. No time to Rabbit on.

@phoenix123 @Ironheade @Eric Generic

OK - I tried it on and I've been rumbled!

Back at the time, the first airing of the UK Top 40 was on a Tuesday lunchtime and for this chart w/e 13th Dec 1980, it would have been on Tuesday 9th Dec (BBC Radio 1) - the morning after John Lennon was murdered - and "Just like starting over" was still climbing inside the top ten on my Retrochart anyway, so it felt right to put it up there at number two as I would have compiled my "Personal chart" on that Tuesday evening after hearing the real chart on Radio One. I would have been fully aware of the news - it did have a profound affect on this 11 year old at the time!

Interestingly it's at number 21 on @Eric Generic's Retrochart - the same position as the UK mainstream chart!

ABBA finally snatch the top spot this week by a whisker, ending a 3 week run by Bruce Springsteen. Hopes for the top fade for Blondie as they spend a third week at #3 and there's a stack of climbers beneath them.

The most likely challenge for the top next week looks to be from Queen who storm 18-07 in their second week. Hall & Oates return to the top ten for the first time since their #8 hit Wait For Me in the first week of the year.
