The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- This week is week ending 14 February 1981 and can include songs released up to 7 February 1981 only.

- Your deadline is MIDNIGHT THURSDAY 10 February.

- You can now chart ANY SONG RELEASED IN 1980.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

14 10 04 The Return Of The Los Palmas 7 Madness 38,000

Well another week gone and another week that John Lennon takes centre stage. He again tops both the singles and album charts today as sales of "Woman" barely drop- 130,000 (down 2%) and raises its total to 413,000, "Starting Over" has sold over 700,000 copies now and "Imagine", which drops 4-6 (47,000) this week, has also sold 587,000 copies making his sales since his death something approaching 2 million in 8 weeks.

He may have Italian grandparents but Joe Dolce was born in the US and grew up in Australia so quite why "Shaddap Ya Face" should be sung in a mock Italian voice is a bit of mystery but it seems to have captured the public imagination. The song has already spent 8 weeks at the top down under and in the songs second week it bolt 30-3 (92,000) propelled by a TOTP performance a lift of 820%- next weeks No 1?

Releasing one single a year seems to be doing the trick for Rainbow, in 1979 "Since You Been Gone" went to No 6, last year "All Night Long" went one better to No 5, and now "I Surrender" jumps 12-5 (58,000). With Graham Bonnet embarking on a solo career this will be the band's assertion that the group matter more than the constituents, album "Difficult to Cure" is out this week!

At 38 he's definitely not the "Oldest Swinger In Town" but that's the name of the track that gives folk musician Fred Wedlock his first top 1o single as it rises 19-7 (40,000) an album of the same title will follow later in the year for those who can't get enough.

Moving back ahead of the pack in the race to have the most top 10 hits in the decade, Madness are up 14-10 (38,000) with "The Return Of The Los Palmas 7". It's a third release from "Absolutely" and their first instrumental (by and large) since "One Step Beyond", it's their sixth straight top 10 hit and fifth in the 80s, one more than any other act, the band will be back in the studio over the summer to record a third album.

Ultravox still improved despite no TOTP this week, they move into runner up spot this week with 93,000 copies but were almost caught at the death by Joe Dolce, whilst Phil Collins sees his chances dissolve as he dips 2-4 (70,000). Also heading south are Blondie who falter 5-8 (38,000) and Adam & The Ants whose sole top 10 entry drops 6-9 (38,000)

I spent the weekend putting together my "Best Of The Year" four-part iTunes playlists for 1980, to match up with the other post-1983 ones I had already fashioned. Plus a straight Top 50, ranked by how much I like them NOW, rather than giving it that authentic "tastes of an 8 year old me" twist. It reminded me what an amazingly strong year 1980 was, and how diverse it was too.

Susan Fassbender is inside the top ten now with "Twlight Cafe":

Ultravox sit comfortably at the top of the HMV Retrochart with "Vienna":

Ultravox enjoy their second week at number one with “Vienna” meanwhile way behind at number two are Blondie with “Rapture” and Phil Collins is stuck at number three with “In the air tonight” moving in the right direction are Visage, Rainbow, Madness and Susan Fassbender who are all climbing inside the top ten. Dire Straits and Adam and the Ants’ “Antmusic” go down the top ten, who incidentally re-release “Kings of the wild frontier” this week – can they break the record and have five singles inside the HMV Retrochart?
This week’s highest new entry comes from The Pretenders with a little help from Oscar Wilde (“We are all of us in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars”) on their new single “Message of love” – they’ve already had a number one (Brass in Pocket) and a number two (Talk of the town) hit last year!
The longest runner on the HMV Retrochart with 13 weeks are Devo’s “Whip it”, which falls 18 places to number 42.
Next week could see new entries from: Motorhead/Girlschool, Roxy Music, Adam and the Ants, RAH Band, Kiki Dee, Kim Wilde and Duran Duran – stay tuned!
