PJOPS Retrochart w/e 16/02/80

The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- This week is week ending 16 February 1980.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of UK/US entries and new releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts.

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date (within the prior 6 months) or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #40)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

Halp, I'm stuck! After a four-week Dead Kennedys rule, I'm so ready for a dethroning -- but I can't be sure of the release date for Killing Joke's 'Wardance'.

A hundred web pages tell us it's just "February" in general, and the only thing I can find that has more detail is the Peel Show Wikia: http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Killing_Joke , which proves Peel played the B side of the single as early as Feb 6th -- but of course it could've just been an advance copy...

Oh when but when do I dare chart it??

There is a date of 20th February 1980 - but I think that's when it was recorded/broadcasted on a "Peel Session" - suggest you get the all clear from @phoenix123 if unsure!

It's a gridlock at the top: The Specials enjoy their second week at number one while Michael Jackson's "Rock with you" is stuck at number two. Strong climbs for The Boomtown Rats, The Whispers and Queen into the top five respectively.

It’s a good week for ex-lead vocalists – The higher climber this week is John Foxx (ex-Ultravox) who moves from 25 to 7 with “Underpass” whereas, the highest new entry at number 13 is from Peter Gabriel (ex-Genesis) with some help from Kate Bush on backing vocals, “Games without frontiers”

Meanwhile, there is some controversy over the new entry at number 30 this week: Kenny Rogers’ “Coward of the country” has just knocked off The Specials from the top of the UK mainstream chart. But that’s not what’s causing the fuss in this region. There have been claims that the song has entered the chart on the “looks” of Kenny himself and not his music!

New in at number 29 this week are Japanese act Godiego and the single “Gandhara “ which is the Theme tune to the Japanese series currently showing on BBC “Monkey” or “Monkey Magic” as it’s known in some quarters!

Oh when but when do I dare chart it??

I had a feeling I'd posted the date for Wardance before, and I had - in the 02/02 retrochart thread....

"It charted on the Indie Singles listings for the week ending March 29th 1980."

Hope that helps!

Sounds like it may have existed sometime in February and may have had radio play but listed on charts in March? If you can only pinpoint month of release I would go for the last charting week of the month/ first charting week of next to be sure its not being charted….prematurely. So w/e 23/02/80 or 01/03/80 seems reasonable?

I'd imagine the Indie Chart sales levels weren't very high, certainly way below the UK Top 40 standards, so chances are it would have entered as soon as copies were available. Peel probably had an advance copy, or even an acetate.

I did remember Eric's charting info thanks, but it does seem to be common web knowledge absolutely everywhere that Wardance was released sometime in February, so I was only worried about the more exact week... It's highly unlikely (even more unlikely than taking a month to chart) that Peel would've played an advance copy eight times, for seven weeks, and then just stopped altogether a week before it's supposed to have been released, doncha think.

So end of February is all the buffer I can give you guys! I just wanted to see if there was any way to list it even earlier...
