THE PJOPS RETROCHART
We are taking a trip down memory lane

The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- This week is week ending 16 August 1980 and can include songs released up to 4 August 1980 only.

- Your deadline is MIDNIGHT Saturday 6 August.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date (within the prior 6 months) or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

gezza76 said:
After beating Diana Ross to the top by just 3,000 copies last week, the past 7 days have produced a much easier victory for the Swedes as they sell a very impressive 147,000 copies, some 23,000 more than Ross at No 2 whose challenge now seems to be over especially given that Sheena Easton sold 123,000 copies to almost overtake her at the end of the week! Total sales of "The Winner Takes It All" now stand at 294,000 after three weeks and should be spurred on by a special gatefold release of the single this week.

It's a bumper week for single sales as the top 4 all top the 100k mark for the first time since Christmas. Indeed next week it may not be Diana who is the main worry for ABBA next week but David Bowie who debuts at No 4 (the fifth track to debut in the top 10 this year) and in the process becomes his highest debuting single ever and biggest hit since "Sound & Vision" three years ago. Thematically it continues to use the character of Major Tom which Bowie first invented for his "Space Oddity" which remains his only UK No 1 single, perhaps he's seeing if good luck can strike twice? It's also the first release from his forthcoming album "Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)" which is due next month, "Ashes To Ashes" sold 104,000 copies last week the highest tally for a No 4 record this year, had it been released a fortnight earlier and sold the same it would have debuted at No 1!

The only other new entry to the top 10 comes from Tom Browne whose ode to his neighbourhood "Funkin For Jamaica" rises 16-10 (37,000) it's the first hit for the US Funk/ Jazz artist and the first release from his second album "Love Approach".

Roxy Music rejoice as "Oh Yeah" climbs 9-5 (73,000) joins in the sales bonanza to mark another high, and the Gap Band double sales to 71,000 this week yet only climb one spot 7-6, and George Benson accelerates 10-7 ( 57,000), the sales highs could be attributed to the return of TOTP and a number of current singles for high demand pop stars not available on albums at present.

All of which is bad news for Odyssey 3-9 (37,000) and Leo Sayer 4-8 (38,000) who tail off badly and are seemingly spent.

Alan Jones Chartfile summary said:
The ABBA phenomenon continues. The swedish supergroup has now chalked up 18 hits. It all started on 20 April 1974 when Waterloo charted in the wake of its Eurovision success. Two weeks later it was #1. Next came a re-issue of Ring Ring also conceived for Eurovision but unable to rank higher than third in the Swedish domestic heat of 1973. Its UK success was also rather limited - 5 weeks on the chart with a high of #32. Unused to sustained success from european acts, the British public chose to ignore the group's next three singles but exactly a year after Ring Ring came I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do possibly the worst single ABBA has ever released.

Nevertheless it reached #38 and helped to establish the foundation for a continuous string of 15 top 10 hits starting with SOS and continuing through to the present day - in fact if SOS is excluded, ABBA's run is an even more impressive 14 consecutive top 5 hits.

Waterloo
Mamma Mia
Fernando
Dancing Queen
Knowing Me Knowing You
The Name Of The Game
Take A Chance On Me
The Winner Takes It All

These have all reached the summit giving ABBA eight number one singles. Only the Beatles (17), Elvis Presley (17) and Cliff Richard (10) have done better. Though The Winner Takes It All is fairly ordinary by ABBA's own high standards it has, in reaching number one, succeeded where the group's last six singles have failed. Indeed, it is 2.5 years since they last topped the chart.

This video clip is hot - so many Daddies, so little time! Woof!
I like the performance by the orchestra of the Giorgio Moroder composition but, hot never crossed my mind. Midnight Dancing by Flower #2 from 11/17/79 (personal chart)would have to be the hottest video(skip the first minute)from that era for me.

Well it was inevitable ABBA would triumph this week after narrowly missing out last week. Ali Thomson storms into the top ten and has become a bit of a surprise hit! Steady climbs for Irene Cara, George Benson and Grace Jones who leapfrogs Sheena Easton to meet her other top ten hit on the way down!

Of the top three highest entries this week, who would have thought Cliff would triumph? @phoenix123 retrochart favourites Queen enter at a relatively low #43 this week but this is simply a reflection of the staggered release which will see it hitting the UK chart weeks after its US debut this week. Bowie has yet to have a significant hit yet so a top 40 entry is a sign he has a good chance of matching his popularity in other regions, at least with this track.

Elsewhere on the chart we have returns for The Beat and Stephanie Mills, along with the first chart action for Paul Simon and even dutch band Maywood, whose recent #1 in that country scrapes into the lower end of the chart.

Outside the top 100 two tracks rebound up the chart thanks to continued US success: Pete Townshend suggests a possible return to the top 100, rebounding #113-#102 while Bozz Scaggs leaps #154-#120. Potential top 100 hits entering outside the chart this week include Hazel O'Connor (#104), Irene Cara (#118) and Rolling Stones (#127).
