THE RETROCHART
We are taking a trip down memory lane

The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- This week is week ending 17 January 1981 and can include songs released up to 10 January 1981 only.

- Your deadline is MIDNIGHT THURSDAY 12 JANUARY.

- You can now chart ANY SONG RELEASED IN 1980.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

The only single that is selling in any kind of quantity this week remains Lennon's "Imagine" which this week sees sales soar to 150,000 as the public farewell doesn't seem to satiated yet. The re-issue has so far sold 281,000, but that doesn't seem to be stemming sales of Lennon's other tracks as again he maintains three singles in the top 5, "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)" slumps 2-3 (47,000) and "Starting Over" holds at No 5, that track has now sold 740,000 copies including a slight increase last week to 45,000.

With total sales now at 242,000 "Antmusic" climbs 4-2 though its sales of 71,000 are less than half of "Imagine" and so it poses a challenge on paper only. In better news parent album "Kings Of The Wild Frontier" climbs 9-3 this week and "Dog Eat Dog" also climbs 66-56 and has now sold 280,000 so should be overtaken by "Antmusic" next week.

Hoping for a re-run of last year's smash and grab on the No 1 spot the Specials are back with "Do Nothing/ Maggie's Farm" which powers 15-4 (47,000) and is a fifth straight top 10 hit for Terry Hall and the boys, it should profit due to the fact that "Maggie's Farm" isn't on the album "More Specials"- it seems that Britain is always eager to escape the winter blues with some SKA/ 2Tone.

It's worth noting of course the political connection to the current prime minister in the Specials hit (as you may know the song was composed by Dylan back in the mid 60s, well before Mrs Thatcher's premiership) but it doesn't seem to have hampered the performance. Unlike the Beat who return to the top 10 with "Too Nice To Talk To" up 20-7 (34,000) after the blip of their last single "Best Friend/ Stand Down Margaret" which only made No 22 becoming their first single to fail to make the top 10.

Help up temporarily over the Christmas period "Rabbit" finally becomes the first top 10 hit for Chas & Dave. Pushing their own brand of "Rockney" the phrase comes from Rhyming slang for "talk" and is a tale of the battle of the sexes, some may not be too happy at the track lyrically but it's done the trick for them.

Not much else happening elsewhere with Jona Lewie stumbling 3-6 (36,000) and the Police drop 7-9 (33,000) and Queen hold at No 10 (33,000)

Just watching Dire Straits Skateaway.

What a great video for 1981! Shame they do nothing for me musically.

On the contrary, reading the comments on the youtube videos for Skateaway, Tunnel Of Love, Romeo & Juliet there seems to be universal hatred for these videos from people who like the real music. The music and visuals are a rather incongruous fit.

Yep... we're in for a year of Adam and the Ants, to judge by how things are going up in the top 20. The new entries are definitely pouring in by now and there's a ton of them starting to climb, so let's see how many of them can stick around.

I have always loved the video to "Skateaway" - I so badly wanted a Sony Stowaway when I was 11 years old!
I'm not sure I even remember it, I've got the Sultans Of Swing DVD somewhere and did watch it some time ago. I did marvel at how awful most of the videos were (I'd only picked it up cheaply for the Brothers In Arms clips, to be honest).

This week's top 3 sounds more like an episode of Planet Earth II (note to self: try not to miss this programme in 35 years time)....we have Antmusic at #1, Rabbit at #2, and (Stray) Cats at #3...while look who's joined the party at #28...

As the joys of Christmas well and truly fade to grey, a number of festive highflyers take a tumble (Jona Lewie drops 9 to 14, Kate Bush is down 9 to 23, while John Lennon sees all three of his charting singles plummet). Several singles are peaking on their 7th week; Queen, Robert Palmer and Status Quo. Stevie Wonder and Racey are making the greatest strides, along with a young Adam & The Ants who could yet dethrone themselves (ouch).

The first proper intake of 1981 includes a solo Phil Collins, the second hit from Streisand's collaboration with Barry Gibb, and Visage - a new "studio" band featuring Midge Ure.

Before I reveal the HMV Retrochart in full - some makers and shakers - are they in your Retrochart?
We've got nine new entries this week and I will feature the higher ones:
To kick off:
Number 44 - new entry for Odyssey and "Hang Together":
