The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- This week is week ending 21 February 1981 and can include songs released up to 14 February 1981 only.

- Your deadline is MIDNIGHT FRIDAY 17 February.

- You can now chart ANY SONG RELEASED IN 1980.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

It might just be co-incidence but only one act in the top 5 doesn't also have an album in the top 5, and that's the act with the No 1 single today, Joe Dolce. "Shaddap You Face" glides 3-1 (126,000) and was out in the front from the off, but in a reverse of last week when Dolce almost caught Ultravox at the death, this week "Vienna" chased hard at the end thanks to a TOTP performance, in the end just 2,000 copies separated the pair. Their album holds at No 5.

For the first time this year I'm not writing about John Lennon being No 1 as he loses his crown on both charts with "Double Fantasy" dropping 1-2 and "Woman" dips 1-3 (82,000) both experience sales drops.

It's been 2 years since Dire Straits were last in the top 10 but they return with "Romeo & Juliet" this week 12-8 (46,000). The Romeo of the tale is Mark Knopfler and it is written about his failed romance with Holly Vincent of Holly & The Italians, relations have now soured with Knopfler claiming that the relationship only mattered in terms of promoting her band. Whether true or not the publicity has worked as the single joins the album in the big 10.

The Stray cats also prove that they have sticking power with their second single "Rock This Town" which thrusts 14-9 (44,000). Their debut album is one of the most anticipated of the year and is out this week, spurred on now by the two successful singles, this track looks like it will outpeak debut single "Runaway Boys" next week.

Garnering an uninterrupted string of 12 top 10 singles between 1971 and 1974 including six chart toppers, Slade have been absent from the top 10 for 6 years now, but the wait is over. Back with a 14th top 10 "We'll Bring The House Down" jumps 17-10 this week with 40,000 purchases, the comeback has in the main been attributed to Slade's performance at the Reading Festival last year where they somewhat stole the show after Black Sabbath pulled out at the last moment- funny thing fate.

In addition to three new entries there are also three climbers in the top 10, Rainbow sneak a place upwards 5-4 (73,000), Fred Wedlock repeats the trick up 7-6 (57,000) and Madness do best of all up 10-7 (57,000), whilst Phil Collins drops 4-5 (58,000) but can console himself with the No 1 album today "Face Value".

EG's WEEKLY RETROCHART TOP 40: FEBRUARY 21st 1981
1981_Feb21_1_zpsh6bmghrw.jpg

1981_Feb21_2_zpszhtjf1ps.jpg

EG's Chartdust: Ultravox hold steady at the top, but there's a third different single at #2 in as many weeks, as XTC take up the challenge of trying to dethrone Vienna. Several records are still climbing on their 5th week (The Look, Steve Winwood, Dire Straits, John Lennon, Cliff Richard and Madness). Adam & The Ants now have FOUR charting singles, as the rebooted Kings Of The Wild Frontier joins the party - although at least two of them look destined to drop out next week.

After the many Lennon singles (new and old) since his death in December 1980, we now get the first bona fide tribute from Roxy Music, who cover an Imagine album track and debut strongly inside the top 30.

Um, not that I think anyone here pays attention to the Finnish charts, but it seems like you've had "Vaatteet" at #1 for some six months now -- but in reality it hasn't topped them since October...: http://suomensinglelistat.blogspot.fi/2015/07/1980.html

Unfortunately I only have the sporadic Billboard lists to update on that secondary list of countries so I just leave the last known #1. Thanks for the link! If anyone has additional links let me know.

Who knew Finland loved Pepsi & Shirlie which even out peaked George and Aretha?

OMG are these official charts? This reads like a Popjustice wet dream!

Week 44/1988
1 1 Pet Shop Boys: Domino Dancing (Parlophone) 7
2 2 Sinitta: I Don’t Believe in Miracles (Fanfare) 4
3 4 Bananarama: Love, Truth and Honesty (London) 3

Love Truth & Honesty was Bananarama's second #1 a week later!

OMG are these official charts?
Good question! Since the blogger is the most distinguished chart journalist in the country, I took it for granted that they would be. But on closer inspection the wording is kind of vague -- and only after clicking the data archive link on the page is it explained that up until 1994 (when the state-owned broadcasting company took on the chart duties) it was a free-for-all mess in Finland: many magazines and radios had to have their own chart, and many dared to call theirs "official" to boot.

So the writer seems to have spared no effort over the years to combine all monthly, fortnightly and weekly top 10s, top 20s and top 30s to present what must be the most reliable overall charts imaginable, given the conditions.

My Retrochart is coming up - but first, as ever here are the makers and shakers - some of them ARE on your Retrochart!
