THE RETROCHART
We are taking a trip down memory lane

The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- This week is week ending 22 November 1980 and can include songs released up to 15 November 1980 only.

- Your deadline is MIDNIGHT Saturday 12 November.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date (within the prior 6 months) or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

Chartfile:

David Bowie makes it look so easy - three weeks at number one with "Fashion" but Kool and the Gang, Abba and even Motorhead are chasing him! Also climbing are Devo, Roxy Music and Blondie. The Police aren't giving up yet as they climb back up to number seven with "Don't stand so close to me" whereas OMD go down and Adam and the Ants are stuck at number ten with "Dog eat dog"

Next week: We will wrap up November and then we'll be into December and Christmas songs!

gezza76 said:
"The Tide Is High" seems to have caught the public imagination as sales swell to 162,000 this week which is more copies sold in a week than either of their other 1980 chart toppers "Call Me" and "Atomic" though of course TTIH has the advantage of not being available on any album and also the additional sales that the run in to Christmas always provides. The song has sold 360,000 copies in just 3 weeks but still has some way to go to beat their biggest seller of the year, that being "Atomic" which has sales of 535,000 to date.

Debuting sensationally at No 1 over on the album charts with "Super Trouper" ABBA prove that that is no hold back to the title track which made its presence felt last week when it debuted at No 13 and this week bounds to No 2 with 116,000 being convinced enough to purchase it. Only 4 previous ABBA singles have been as high as "Super Trouper" is on their second week and of them two went on to be No 1 hits ("Waterloo" and "Take A Chance On Me") whilst two never made it there ("Chiquitita" and "I Have A Dream") so it's 50/50 on this ones chances next week.

ABBA are the only new entries in the entire top 10 this week though there are two climbers, David Bowie rises 6-5 (53,000) and Stephanie Mills jumps 9-6 (53,000) and Dennis Waterman holds at No 4 though does increase sales wise by 63% to 86,000 and he almost overtook a falling Barbra Streisand whose "Woman In Love" drops 2-3 (86,000) which has now sold 666,000 copies and rises to No 7 in the YTD's and should make the top 4 next week on that list.

Fallers make up the bottom of the big 10, Bad Manners drop 3-7 (51,000), Adam & The Ants move 7-8 (44,000), OMD are in reverse again 8-9 (43,000) and Status Quo cling on 5-10 (36,0000)

I know it will be difficult for you all not to have seminal 1980 track There's No-One Quite Like Grandma shooting straight in at the top of all your charts but please try and practice some restraint.

There is a 4-way tussle for the top of my chart this week.

Will Celebration make it a second week? Will Bruce Springsteen continue his charge to the top or will chart goliaths Blondie claim their third #1 of the year. Could ABBA vault straight to the top in only their second week?

The HMV Chart will be up in full later on this evening.
Before that - here's some makers and shakers - are they in your Retrochart?

Number 42 - new entry for Kenny Rogers and "Lady" - written by Lionel Richie (of The Commodores) this single is currently sitting pretty at the top of the US Hot 100. Now it's crossed over to the HMV chart - rumour has it that the gatefold poster sleeve cover of the single is selling like hot cakes in the region!:

Number 39 - new entry for Electric Light Orchestra and "Don't walk away" - single number six from the film "Xanadu" following:

I'm Alive (ELO)
Xanadu (ELO & Olivia Newton John)
All over the world (ELO)
Magic (Olivia Newton John)
Suddenly (Olivia Newton John & Cliff Richard)
