THE PJOPS RETROCHART
We are taking a trip down memory lane

The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- This week is week ending 23 August 1980 and can include songs released up to 11 August 1980 only.

- Your deadline is MIDNIGHT Saturday 13 August.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date (within the prior 6 months) or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

07 07 05 Give Me The Night George Benson

gezza76 said:
The Story of Major Tom continues to provide commercial gold for Bowie as he grabs his second UK No 1 single this week. The promo vid is reportedly the most expensive ever made coming in at £250,000 and includes some key movers in the new London club scene centring around the Blitz Club in Covent Garden which has been hitting the headlines in recent months. As one of the primary influences on the new scene it is no surprise that Bowie has utilised the "movement", "Ashes To Ashes" sold 146,000 copies last week to easily power to the top spot, no shame to ABBA though as they may drop 1-2 but they added 123,000 to their total which now stands at 417,000 a month after release.

There's a little bit of chart history created this week as for the first time since the chart went to a top 50 a record debuts in the top 10 in successive weeks. Following Bowie into the top 5 The Jam return with "Start" which debuts at No 3 and sells 118,000 into the bargain though it actually slacked off sales wise toward the end of the week and was initially neck and neck with Bowie!

It may not be the muso's favourite single but Kelly Marie is finally in the top 10 after gliding 16-8 (53,000). It was released some months ago and was something of a cult hit on the Scottish club scene which prompted a re-issue and it is finally a hit breaking her in this country, it is worth noting that she has hit the big time in several countries with other tracks most notable in France and of course she won opportunity knocks four times in a row a few years ago.

First championed by DJ John Peel Brighton's punk band The Piranhas finally slip into the top 10 moving 13-9 (46,000). "Tom Hark" is of course a cover of the 1958 hit by Elias and His Zig Zag Jive Flutes which spent 4 weeks at No 2 so it has big boots to fill if it's to match the original.

Elsewhere Sheena Easton continues to set records as she now records the highest sales for a No 4 track with "9 To 5" selling 118,000 and almost overtaking The Jam- it's shaping up to be one of the biggest hits of the year so far.

Dropping this week are Diana Ross 2-5 (65,000), Roxy Music 5-6 (64,000) Gap Band 6-7 (64,000) and George Benson 7-10 (44,000)

Ironheade's Record of Singles has received a report... could we have the third real mega-hit of 1980 on our hands?...

Before I post my Retrochart for w/e 23rd August 1980, here's some makers and shakers - are they in your Retrochart?

Number 44 - new entry for The Selecter and "The Whisper":

Number 24 - new entry for Hazel O'Connor and "Eighth day" - this is from her new movie "Breaking glass", which also stars Phil Daniels (if I recall correctly):

It's the highest new entry this week: The Jam and a cover of The Beatles "Taxman"…Oops sorry, I mean their new single called "Start!" - but which position has it entered at?

This week’s top three was very tight but David Bowie wins out with “Ashes to Ashes” ending Abba’s three week run at the top with “The winner takes it all”
This leaves Roxy Music’s “Oh Yeah” stuck at number three now for the third week and Sheena Easton is stuck at number four with “9 to 5”
Elsewhere in the top ten ELO, Grace Jones, The Clash all climb where as, Diana Ross, Joy Division and The Gapband go down.

The highest new entry this week is at number 14 for The Jam and “Start!” their follow up to their number one hit “Going underground” can they make it two number ones in a row?

Next week could see new entries from Gary Numan, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Elvis Presley, Judas Priest, Level 42 and U2

A more comfortable week at #1 for ABBA this week as Irene Cara pressures Diana Ross for runner up position, followed closely by yet another top 5 hit for Billy Joel. Grace Jones is also on the verge of another top 5 hit while Sheena Easton gains some ground but is leapfrogged by both Ali Thomson and Dionne Warwick's first top 10 hit so she actually falls one place.
