PJOPS Retrochart w/e 24/01/81

@Eric Generic love how Visage and Ultravox are next to each other in your Retrochart this week!

They weren't originally...I got a bit overexcited and made 11 spaces for new songs by mistake, and only realised when I'd got as high as #8 that I didn't have enough singles left....haha...so I had a rethink of the lower positions, brought The Police up to #15 instead of #16, leaving Fade To Grey at #16 because I wanted Vienna to debut at #17 (in my mind's eye, I often have this idea of where I want certain classics to enter).

I feel the same - I knew that both Phil Collins and Ultravox had to have dramatic climbs this week!

I never realised @Hairycub1969 was such a Lennon stan. Lennonstan....sounds like an eastern European country!
He was my favourite Beatle and back in December 1980 after his death, I borrowed some of my neighbours Beatles/John Lennon records and educated myself. January 1981 is full of memories of listening to his music
- "Woman" is such a wonderful tribute to all "Women" - it's a song I dedicate to my Mum, Sister and all my fag hag friends!

I think I was too young to really take in what happened to John Lennon, I could tell it was a huge deal, and through so much exposure to those charting singles around Xmas 1980/Jan 1981 I got to hear what he was like away from the Beatles, which I hadn't before. We were a McCartney household, if you like, with Band On The Run, and Abbey Road (famously a Lennon-lite affair overall), and our family friends also had tons of Wings and Macca stuff. Lennon was that guy who went a bit weird, with the hair and beard and Yoko Ono business....he'd not even made a record since 1975 so again that meant those formative years watching TOTP and hearing the radio between 1974 and 1979 were almost entirely Lennon-free (Happy Xmas the only real exception).

By the time of Woman's release, the young me was really getting Lennon fatigue, he seemed to have another track at #1 every five minutes, but obviously with hindsight there is a lot there to take in, and listen to with all sorts of added emotions. I don't think I even became much of a Lennon admirer until discovering Sgt Pepper in my parents collection (the album, not the fellow!) one rainy summer 1985 afternoon and it started to click. These days, my favourite tracks off most Beatles album would probably be Lennon ones, rather than McCartney by default as it used to be.
