We are taking a trip down memory lane

- This week is week ending 25 October 1980 and can include songs released up to 18 October 1980 only.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date (within the prior 6 months) or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

With the highest climb to the top spot since the Specials back in January Barbra Streisand soars 9-1 this week to depose the Police who fall back 1-3 (85,000) but moves 6-2 on the YTD charts and the band hold onto the No 1 spot over on the album charts, they also move to within 10,000 copies of Kelly Marie who currently has pole position on the YTD listings but she should lose that position next week along with the tracks place in the top 40 as it moves 27-34 this week.

Streisand sold an impressive 91,000 copies this week to claim her first No 1 single and beat her previous peak position of No 3 attained by "A Star Is Born (Evergreen)" and "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)" clearly no parenthesis is all she needed. The battle for No 1 this week was a close run thing with both Streisand The Police and Ottawan coming out on top on various days and it was actually "D.I.S.C.O" who lead early week when it looked like it was finally going to get its week in the sun but it wasn't to be- it ended up selling 87,000 copies to take its cumulative tally to 501,000 copies and over the half million mark.

Only 2 new tracks to concern us this week and they both come from acts who have already graced the upper reaches of the chart this year. The Nolans of course scored a massive hit in January with "I'm In The Mood For Dancing" which has shifted just shy of half a million, follow up "Don't Make Waves" stopped at No 12 but "Gotta Pull Myself Together" returns them to business as it climbs 14-9 (48,000) and shows that the recent line up change (Anne has left as is replaced by Coleen) hasn't dented fans enthusiasm.

Shooting 21-10 (42,000) is George Benson who scores another top 10 from his album "Give Me The Night" with "Love X Love". Again penned by Rod Temperton this has already become his biggest era commercially speaking.

Climbers this week comprise Status Quo with "What You're Proposing" up 5-4 (81,000) and Matchbox 10-6 (73,000) whilst Odyssey hold at No 7 for a third week but sales increase 18% to 68,000. Both Madness (3-5, 79,000) and Sweet People (4-8, 51,000) both look like heading out of the 10 but the 11,000 copies between No 1 and No 5 show just what a close week this has been!

There's a partial clear out of the top ten this week with B-52s, Shalamar and Irene Cara making way for some new top ten hits and a collapse by both of the top 2 singles last week gives us a top 3 of climbers.

Diana Ross scores a second consecutive top ten hit following on the heels of her 2 weeks at number one with Upside Down which is still topping the charts around the world. Barbra Streisand scores her first ever top ten hit, as do OMD who have improved their peak of each chart entry this year with Electricity hitting #21 followed by Messages at #18. Madness and The Police continue to gain with their massive UK hits.

In the top 3, current US top 10 hits by Pointer Sisters and Stephanie Mills are vying for the top which this week is claimed by Bob Marley & The Wailers, making it a second #1 on the trot. Their last was 3 months ago already!
