THE RETROCHART
We are taking a trip down memory lane

The Rules

- This is a retrochart which commenced week ending 5 January 1980.

- This week is week ending 27 December 1980 - the CHRISTMAS CHART and can include songs released up to 20 December 1980 only.

- Your deadline is MIDNIGHT Sunday 18 December.

- Post in the thread or start a new conversation with me with your top 10/20/100 songs of each week.

- Each week I will post a list of new entries and releases that are eligible to chart and links to international charts (click on the flag / icon for the hyperlink).

- The list will not be exhaustive and you are free to add any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date (within the prior 6 months) or songs contemporaneously charting on international charts. If you do I would appreciate any links to evidence the release date or chart history to update the archive.

- You are free to use your own personal charts from the time (if you have them) or create an updated list for this chart.

- Please rank your songs from your favourite downwards. (eg #1 down to #100)

- Your #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points etc

- The weekly PJOPS Retrochart is compiled from accumulated points each week.

- It would be fantastic if you could regularly contribute lists but understandably there may be weeks you can not. If someone fails to contribute towards a weekly chart their previous week’s choices will be frozen and contribute to the chart but the points will be halved. This is to prevent wild fluctuations in chart positions depending on contributions.

In a week in which most of the music industry were refusing to believe that anything but John Lennon would be the festive No 1 St Winifred's School Choir have turned up a chart surprise as "There's No-One Quite Like Grandma" becomes the Christmas No 1 for 1980 and a record equalling 26th No 1 of the calendar year drawing 1980 level with 1965. They sold 252,000 copies of their track last week to sprint over the 550,000 copies mark just in time as we finish the year, naturally that's the best tally of the year (as Christmas normally is) but it was far from a convincing victory!

Both new entries to the top 10 come this week from the man himself John Lennon. Some suggest that were not for the split in sales then "(Just Like) Starting Over" would easily have seen the year out at No 1 and in truth the three titles sold a cumulative 412,000 copies over the last week, "Starting Over" itself responsible for 231,000 as it slid to No 2 on a 5% sales dip. However a fully re-issued "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)" hurtles 45-4 this week selling 122,000 in the copies and was of course a No 4 hit for John & Yoko back in 1972 and so has at least matched that peak and may out do it yet with New Year still ahead of us.

Another re-issue comes in the form of Lennon's 1975 track "Imagine" which peaked at No 6 five years ago but perhaps with more poignant lyrics given recent events it may re-peak, it slams straight into the top 10 at No 9 ( 59,000) and brings to 10 in total the number of tracks to achieve this feat in 1980.

Adam & The Ants also make some headway jumping 10-7 and record a 99% sales increase to 77,000 which in some weeks this year would see them at No 1 but as its Christmas No 7 will have to suffice.

With the exception of St Winifred's and Adam & The Ants nothing else is climbing in the top 10 though as you might expect everything goes up sales wise. Jona Lewie up 61% to 183,000 and holds at No 3, Abba up 29% to 86,000 despite a one place drop, The police similarly drop 1 with sales up 25%, Madness continue to fall 6-8 (71,000) sales up 32% and Stray Cats dip 9-10 (58,000) with a 45% sales hike.

As BMRB are taking a well earned rest next week there is no chart so instead we'll be looking at the top 10 best selling singles acts of the year !

John Lennon is the HMV Retrochart Christmas Number One of 1980 with "(Just like) Startin' over":

Chartfile:
The Christmas number one of 1980 is the late John Lennon with “(Just like) Startin’ over”. He has three singles in the top ten this week as “Merry Christmas (war is over)” jumps up from 16 to 4 and “Imagine” is the highest new entry at number five. The Police are stuck at number two and Jona Lewie is stuck at number three. Good week for Adam and the Ants who have three singles in the chart: “Antmusic” climbs to number six, the re-released “Young Parisians” enters at number 48, whereas their debut hit “Dog eat dog” slides one place to number 44. Devo and Gary Numan are climbing inside the top ten, whereas Robert Palmer and Abba head downwards.

The longest runner on the HMV chart is Madness with “Baggy Trousers” climbing back up to number 43 after 16 weeks on the chart. The Police, who have one of the biggest HMV Retrochart hits of the year with “Don’t stand so close to me” climb back up to number 25 after 14 weeks in the chart.

That’s it for 1980. The HMV Retrochart will be back in the New Year for W/e 3rd January 1981 kicking off one the best years in pop music – who knows what the future holds – stay tuned!

Number 27 - After 6 weeks on the HMV Retrochart, he's still climbing up from 31 it's Barry Manilow and "Lonely Together":

I am partial to a bit of Manilow magic, but this one leaves me cold. I had it poised to enter my own chart, but once I'd listened to it again I didn't like it that much.
