Pokémon

I wonder what the deal with Iono's Magnemites is. They actually move around so presumably they're not just accessories, and it's kinda weird there'd be an alternate version of a Pokémon that's not actually available in the game. I can't remember something like that ever happening before? Wonder if they're saving them for the DLC. I mean, I suppose they could just be like... robotic accessories that move around on their own, but that'd be a real waste of such a cute design. And "robotic accessories that move around on their own" isn't that far removed from what some Pokémon are nn

Still the best mon (re)design this gen, really.

How awful are the performance issues for you guys? I haven't played a Pokemon game properly since Nintendo DS days so am wondering if I should bother picking this up?

It definitely doesn't run as well as a game of its stature should, and some parts of it look particularly rough. However, I'm approaching nearly halfway through the main story, and I'm honestly having a great time. The story is really enjoyable, the new Pokemon are generally fun, and the exploration element of the game is surprisingly expansive - albeit a bit flimsy beyond the surface.

Put it this way, since I got it last Friday, I've been genuinely quite annoyed that I've not had more time to spend with it. In terms of sheer fun, story, and amount to do, it's worth it for me so far.

She literally said in her presentation they’re just hair pins.

One of the best things about this game has to be how alive the Pokémon feel. The way each species has its own behaviour in the wild is so cool, and not just individually but as part of groups too. I love how they react to battles as well, some Pokémon gather close to watch almost as if cheering, others watch from afar and others just ignore it and stay doing their thing. It really makes the world feel so dynamic and immersive.

I spent all day yesterday being stunned at Quaquaval's animations. Aqua Step looks great and was so refreshing to see after the marathon of very basic move animations up till then. Love the way his feathers animate. And his swimming animation! Plus his animations during the Psychic Gym 'dance' test. They're all so well done and he's really charming.

I also rode past a sleeping Golduck under a tree and when it woke up startled it seemed so real lol.

Fuck Iono in particular

Her gym exam, and the Clavell's participation in it, actually made me like her a little more. Her original showing in the promo was grating.

If you like retro games like N64 era that are rough around the edges because of the time they're from, then you'll love this game released in 2022. It's playable, if you completely disregard a game released 25+ years after the N64 should probably run a hell of a lot better than this. There's catching, there's battling... Let's be honest, they are never going to fuck up that aspect of the games. Hell, it's the only thing they never make any changes to (or really any improvements to either) so that is solid. It's just the *motions vaguely* everything else, that is kind of on unsteady ground.
Story is good, if you don't mind an occasional stereotypical anime highschool story beat. The characters are likeable enough. I love the way they're designed. The Pokemon Company has really hit their stride the last few games with designs for the humans especially.

People seem to like the exploration, although for me, I think in going to open world, it's lost a lot of charm and uniqueness. No longer will you get lost in a cave, or a factory, or a forest, or trying to find your way around the Celadon City mall. The biomes feel pretty much all the same to me, except with grass swapped out with sand swapped out with snow depending on where you are. The joyous nostalgia for seeing Pokemon running around in the open has it's charms for awhile though- but you can only see them a few inches from where your character is because the game doesn't load them in from very far, which is probably for the best as anything too far away would have 2 frames like a picture flipbook anyways.

Interiors in this game are basically nonexistent. PokeCenter/Marts are outdoor gas stations. Gym battles take place outside as well. Everything is outside, from what i've played so far. The only buildings you can enter in towns are food and clothing shops- which you can't actually enter, your character goes in the door and then you are just brought to a menu screen to select. Sometimes those menu shops are repeated more than once in the same town as well to give the illusion that there is more places to visit in the town than you actually can visit.

I actually think i'd recommend Legends Arceus over this if you just want to catch Pokemon and see them in a 3D environment. I also think that it was more thrilling for me to come across Pokemon in the wild in that game, and the way the Pokemon behave out in the wild seemed way more varied. Where as in Scarlet & Violet, the Pokemon just kind of waddle around and occasionally chase you down which is very easy to avoid. In Arceus, they would team up against you, dive bomb at you, or run away if you weren't sneaky enough.
But if battling and collecting badges is something that excites you, then this would be the better choice as Arceus doesn't really do all that.

You also have to enjoy Pokemon wearing oversized crystalline hats, and be a lover of sandwiches. Both required. Sorry, this was way more of a review than what you asked for. I just think that performance issues that everyone is talking about is really distracting from other actual issues.

No, thank you for the detailed insight, I was considering getting Arceus but your point about it not really containing the battling/badge mechanic may actually sway me towards this instead as that's my main enjoyment I get from the Pokémon games.

I wish they made Team Star actually mischievous and gave more purpose to this quest. We’re supposed to bring them down just because code name Alopecia or whatever told us to over the phone? Ok.

It's actually kind of been awhile since I felt like an evil Team in Pokemon was actually doing anything particularly evil. To be honest, I wouldn't be mad if they brought back Team Rocket into a new region trying to steal people's Pokemon and such. There was so much more dramatic intrigue there. They took over whole businesses and buildings, the leader was also a GYM LEADER. That poor person in Cerulean City got their whole house torn through by Team Rocket's diglet or whatever. It was scandalous. Pokemon needs more crime, besides the crime of selling me a $60 game that needs work still.

Given the school setting it makes sense the "evil" team would be pesky but ultimately harmless delinquents rather than actual criminals/villains. I think it's fun how Team Star plays on the whole Japanese biker gang thing, down to Clive's pompadour being the traditional hairstyle associated with that. Certainly an improvement compared to Team Yell, now that was absolutely stupid.

I just checked and they still made Apricorn Balls annoying to get (and you currently can’t even get the Safari/Sport Balls?). The Beast Ball also needs to be changed, either make it more accessible or change it’s stupid catch rate.
